1
Brokeback Mountain (2005,  R)
Brokeback Mountain
A beautiful, simple, yet wondrously complex love story. I love everything about this movie- it's the most beautiful love story I've ever seen on screen.
2
Titanic (1997,  PG-13)
Titanic
lovelovelove it! gorgeous and wonderful and totally heartbreaking! i cry every single time i watch it!
3
Cinderella Man (2005,  PG-13)
Cinderella Man
quite excellent, with fine performances and production values. i saw some of it being shot, and ron howard!
4
The English Patient (1996,  R)
The English Patient
beautiful and moving.
5
The Constant Gardener (2005,  R)
The Constant Gardener
an excellently made and wonderfully acted (ralph fiennes broke my heart) love story. but don't think this movie is just about the two main characters- its message is quite powerful. i love the exotic setting. its only faults are that it jumps around a bit too much and is a little confusing at times.
6
Hotel Rwanda (2004,  PG-13)
Hotel Rwanda
the entire cast is amazing in this haunting, terrifying, and heartbreaking movie. it's very powerful- i've had nightmares about it.
7
To Kill A Mockingbird (1962,  Unrated)
To Kill A Mockingbird
pretty gosh-darn excellent. gregory peck is amazing!
8
Casablanca (1943,  PG)
Casablanca
absolutely perfect. spectacular in every way.
9
Cold Mountain (2003,  R)
Cold Mountain
renee zellweger is AMAZING in this sad tale and completely deserved her oscar. overall, it's very moving and beautiful, if slightly gory. having read the book though, i appreciate jude law's portrayal of inman even less than i did before.
10
Shakespeare in Love (1998,  R)
Shakespeare in Love
wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. the cast is excellent, the costumes and sets gorgeous, the direction is great- i love it! the story is so enchanting and well-woven it almost doesn't seem real.
11
The Pianist (2002,  R)
The Pianist
extremely well-made and acted by adrien brody, this movie is excellent and haunting but hard to watch at times.
12
A Time to Kill (1996,  R)
A Time to Kill
excellent, excellent, excellent. the cast is amazing, the writing and direction are amazing, everything is amazing. only the ending is a bit too hollywood.
13
In the Bedroom (2001,  R)
In the Bedroom
incredibly well-done, with amazing, shattering performances. so depressing though, that i doubt if i ever want to see it again.
14
American Beauty (1999,  R)
American Beauty
kevin spacey is amazing, as is the rest of the cast in this wonderfully-written and directed movie. it's chilling and resonant, and very memorable.
15
The Hours (2002,  PG-13)
The Hours
an amazing movie with three beautifully woven-together stories and wonderful performances by everyone.
16
Capote (2005,  R)
Capote
an excellent, interesting, chilling movie. it's very dramatic, thanks to taut writing and direction. the entire cast is amazing, but philip seymour hoffman truly shines. he really did deserve his oscar. i mean, he is truman capote. it's actually freaky to watch him as himself in the featurettes after the movie.
17
Gone With the Wind (1939,  G)
Gone With the Wind
it's visually spectacular, and the perfomances are excellent, but by the end i just wanted to kick scarlett o'hara. it's hard for me to sympathize with such a whiner.
18
Amadeus (1984,  R)
Amadeus
absolutely marvelous. sure, it may have flaws, but who cares? the sets and costumes are gorgeous, the humour top-notch, the music is (of course) beautiful, the acting and story are divine...and tom hulce's laugh has got to be the funniest thing i've ever heard.
19
Road to Perdition (2002,  R)
Road to Perdition
quite moving and well-done. the pace is a little slow, but the cinematography is beautiful and all of the actors give excellent performances (jude law is wonderfully creepy!). the ending is honest but very sad.
20
Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002,  PG)
Rabbit-Proof Fence
beautiful, powerful, and very moving. it's extremely sad too, both for the girls and for all they represent.
21
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975,  R)
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
such a great tale of the human spirit, but wow, it really sucks the life right out of you. halfway through, i said, hey, this isn't' as grim as i thought it would be- well, i was wrong. the ending shall haunt me forever. it's magnificent, though, with wonderful direction and an amazing performance by jack nicholson and the entire cast. louise fletcher is scarier than any horror movie monster as nurse ratched.
22
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
A beautiful, wonderful, magical little movie. The story is so simple, yet so powerful in both its beauty and its sadness. Brad Pitt plays Ben Button with such wonderful childlike innocence in his youth, such beautiful wisdom in his old age, that I defy any viewer to believe he really is as old/young as he looks at any given point in the movie. Taraji P. Henson steals the show as Ben's loving nanny. Did I ever tell you I was struck by lightning seven times?
23
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999,  R)
The Talented Mr. Ripley
beautiful, intelligent, and chilling. the first few minutes are hard to get into, but things only get more and more interesting as the film progresses, finally reaching a shattering conclustion. the entire supporting cast is great, but jude law really stands out- he is just fantastic. matt damon is amazing as well, crafting a character who is both horrible but undeniably sympathetic.
24
William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (2004,  R)
William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice
sumptuous and stunning, this "problem play" turns out not to be such a problem movie after all. the direction, cast, and production are all wonderful, and jeremy irons and al pacino are amazing.
25
Mrs. Miniver (1942,  Unrated)
Mrs. Miniver
very well done, with great acting and a great script. sad ending too.
26
Paths of Glory (1957,  Unrated)
Paths of Glory
amazing look at the insanity of war. everyone should see this movie.
27
White Oleander (2002,  PG-13)
White Oleander
tough and heartbreaking, this movie boasts wonderful performances by all its leads, especially lohman.
28
Far From Heaven (2003,  PG-13)
Far From Heaven
excellent movie, and julianne moore is amazing. this movie actually looks like it was made in the 50s, not just about the 50s, which is quite an acheivement.
29
Crash (2004,  R)
Crash
a very interesting and emotional movie that is also extremely powerful and draws you in COMPLETELY. the story is excellent and the acting is amazing all around. the main problem with the movie is that it tries to say way too much about race, and just ends up being preachy. the language starts to get annoying after a while too. still, it's amazing how all of the characters are connected, and how none of them ever become stereotypes.
