Fargo (1996,  R)
Fargo
One of the most striking things about Fargo is the cold, satire weather. At the beginning of the film we see endless white until we see a car's headlight's seeping through that vast colour. This is what struck me the most about Fargo. After seeing this cold, endless snow, what unfolds over the next hour and a half, through all of the slapstick comedy, violence and suspense is one of the best films I've ever seen. The Coen brothers have created a completely original masterpeice that is undoubtably the best film they have ever made, and probably the best film they will ever make.

Joel and Ethan Coen, whose other credits include No Country For Old Men, Millers Crossing and Barton Fink, have really outdone themselves here with this smart, thrilling masterpeice. The film stars William H. Macy as Jerry Lundeggard, a car salesman who is heavily in debt. He hatches a plan in order to repay his debt. He hires to thugs, brilliantly played by Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare, to kidnap Jerrys wife and hold her for randsom at $1 million, which Jerrys wealthy father-in-law, played by Harve Presnell, will pay for. All goes according to plan until one of the thugs (Peter Stormare), is forced to kill a state trooper and an innocent couple who witness the murder. The three bodies are discovered the next morning and into the mix comes Brainerd's police cheif Margie Gunderson, played bu Frances McDormand in an Oscar winning role. What unfolds next is one of the most original, compeling stories in the history of cinema.

I cannot say enough good things about Fargo and I cannot recommend it enough. There isn't a dull moment here, there is so much emotion in this film. Every scene is as compelling, exhilarating, funny, exciting and unpredictible as the next. An absoulte masterpeice of modern cinema.
