1
Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) (2001,  R)
Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
One of the sweetest, quirkiest, and most original films I've ever seen. Audry Tatou is wonderful as Amelie, a shy waitress with an impish grin and a big heart. Always makes me smile, a wonderful little film.
2
Downfall (Der Untergang) (2004,  R)
Downfall (Der Untergang)
Bruno Ganz gives an INCREDIBLE performance as Adolf Hitler facing his last few days in a bunker in a crippled and ruined Berlin. As the Russians close in around the city, the situation becomes even more hopeless. In my opinion, this is one of the best German films I've ever seen, and perhaps one of the best war movies.
3
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
An incredibly imaginative and beautifully rendered adult fairy tale.
4
Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire) (The Sky Above Berlin) (1987,  PG-13)
Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire) (The Sky Above Berlin)
This movie is BEAUTIFUL. It's imagery is striking and artistic, it's script reads like poetry, and it's music is haunting and melancholy. Will always be one of my favorites.
5
Good Bye, Lenin (2004,  R)
Good Bye, Lenin
A humorous look at the fall of the Berlin wall through the eyes of young Alex, a bored and confused young man who attempts to recreate East Germany for his sick mother. Funny and heartwarming scenes makes Goodbye Lenin a wonderful little film.
6
Water (2005,  PG-13)
Water
Culturally rich and beautifully realized, Water is the true story of widows living in India during the 1930s. Seen through the sparkling eyes of Chuyia, an eight year old widow left alone after her husband dies, Water is a joy to watch from beginning to end.
7
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God) (1972,  Unrated)
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God)
Klaus Kinski is pretty much a GOD in this movie. Herzog's best and one of Klaus Kinski's finest performances as the vicious and maniacal Don Lope de Aguirre. As we follow his doomed expedition through the jungle and his descent into madness, you can't help but feel drawn into the haunting story.
8
Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003,  R)
Cidade de Deus, (City of God)
This movie is INCREDIBLE. I don't even have words to describe it. It's one of those rare films that leaves you stunned, shocked, and amazed. A must see.
9
Maria Full of Grace (2004,  R)
Maria Full of Grace
Fascinating story of human "mules" from Columbia smuggling cocaine into the United States. It has an incredible realistic and human touch, making it even more powerful to watch.
10
Goodbye, Children (Au Revoir Les Enfants) (1987,  PG)
Goodbye, Children (Au Revoir Les Enfants)
Heartbreaking story of a young Jewish schoolboy who goes into hiding at a French school. I was literally sobbing at the end, an excellent movie.
11
La Cage Aux Folles (1979,  R)
La Cage Aux Folles
Hilarious story of gay men, one being a transsexual, who must put their lives on hold and dawn a facade of being a typical family for their son's young fiance and her ultra-conservative family. Hysterical from beginning to end!
12
Earth (1999,  Unrated)
Earth
Like Water, Earth is another fascinating story about the people of India, this time during the formation of Pakistan.
13
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies) (1988,  Unrated)
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
Only a few movies make me cry, very few make me sob, and even less leave me devastated and heartbroken. This is the story of two Japanese children who are orphaned after a bombing raid kills their mother in WWII. As they attempt to fend for and provide for themselves, their situation becomes even more hopeless. I guarantee that if you don't cry during this movie, you have no soul.
14
Oldboy (2005,  R)
Oldboy
Engrossing and surreal film about a man who is imprisoned for fifteen years and seeks revenge for his time lost. The ending will blow you away!
15
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) (1999,  R)
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt)
This movie is just pulsing with awesomeness. Lola has ten minutes to find her boyfriend 10,000 deutchmarks before he is killed. Set to a throbbing techno soundtrack, Run Lola Run is amazing from beginning to end.

The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del diablo)
Written by Guillermo de Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) The Devils Backbone is the first installment of his movies about the Spanish Civil War. Eerie and mysterious, the Devil's Backbone is fascinating to watch and is perfect for those who loved Pan's Labyrinth.
19
Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum) (1979,  R)
Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum)
Surreal story of Oscar, a boy living in the German controlled Danzig who refuses to grow up. With his piercing scream and tin drum, Oscar provides a fascinating insight into the rise of the Nazi Party and the nature of war. Still, it's hard to get past how freakin' weird this movie is, even if you have read Gunter Grass's novel.
20

Good list. If you like foreign films though, see "Funny Games" (1997). It is very good.
