Downfall (Der Untergang) (2004, R)
Bruno Ganz gives an INCREDIBLE performance as Adolf Hitler facing his last few days in a bunker in a crippled and ruined Berlin. As the Russians close in around the city, the situation becomes even more hopeless. In my opinion, this is one of the best German films I've ever seen, and perhaps one of the best war movies. |

Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies) (1988, Unrated)
Only a few movies make me cry, very few make me sob, and even less leave me devastated and heartbroken. This is the story of two Japanese children who are orphaned after a bombing raid kills their mother in WWII. As they attempt to fend for and provide for themselves, their situation becomes even more hopeless. I guarantee that if you don't cry during this movie, you have no soul. |

Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum) (1979, R)
Surreal story of Oscar, a boy living in the German controlled Danzig who refuses to grow up. With his piercing scream and tin drum, Oscar provides a fascinating insight into the rise of the Nazi Party and the nature of war. Still, it's hard to get past how freakin' weird this movie is, even if you have read Gunter Grass's novel. |

Good list. If you like foreign films though, see "Funny Games" (1997). It is very good.
