Aliens (1986,  R)
Aliens
The movie that redefined what a monster movie can be, and set a new standard that no one has been able to acheive since!
2
The Thing (1982,  R)
The Thing
Another monster movie classic, one of the few remakes that outsines the original! The ultimate monster

Bubba Ho-Tep (2003,  R)

A rampaging mummy ina old folks home? Sound super corny. but the title is sublime in its orignality

A unique and engaging indenpendent film meets your typical monster movie. the movie is about life and living in a old folks home, about legacies, about the human condition, about finding dignity, and somewhere in there a rampaging cowboy mummy. The main charcter Sebastian Haff is an aging man living in an East Texas rest home who belives he is Elvis Prieslty. The story is compellling, you start out feeling for poor deluded old Sebastian (played by Bruce Campbell!) for believing he is Evlis, but by the movies end you do end up believing/hoping he is indeed Elvis. Sebastian teams up with another nursing home resident Jack, who belives he is John F Kenndy

Splinter (2008,  R)
Splinter
A truely amazing gem among the direct to video crowd. It manages to avoid falling victim to nearly any every cliche in the genre. The acting and actors are solid throughout. The story moves well and doesn't fall into obvious traps. It blazes some new ground where Among the three leads, none of them become the primary 'hero'. They all seem to rotate the duty of contributing to saving their compatraiots skins.

The monster is very well done, and appreciate the science they imply to the monster. Its not overly specific but just enough to give you a feeling of understanding it... and why its doing what its doing. This is a great movie that the industry should look at to rodel model some basic ideas in story telling.

Cloverfield (2008,  PG-13)
Cloverfield
Cloverfield, is epic and the very model of a monster movie, although they missed the opprtunity to explore in more detail the deconstruction of society at such a event, but it was solid. The downsides are the gimicy 'camera thing' and the wandering plot kept it from earning top spot on this list

The Host (Gwoemul) (2007,  R)
The Host (Gwoemul)
Very interesting and enthralling tale of a monster in korea. Great effects, dark mood through most of it, but the plot devolves a bit about half way through, and the comic relief kind of broke the rythem of a otherwise great movie.
7
Deep Rising (1998,  R)
Deep Rising
A giant see monster under the sea atacks a cruiseline. There are equal parts dark and comedy in this very good monster movie. Shame there was no sequel.
8
Feast (2005,  R)
Feast
Feast is a interesting departure from the standard horror/monster conventions. It ironic undertones are reminiscent of Scream, but takes it in a diffirent direction. A solid and unique take on the monster movie genre.

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah - Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2003,  Unrated)
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah - Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Godzilla is just pure nasty in this take, stomping humans not by accident, but just because hates them. This is the best of the newer Godzilla flicks, with Godzilla 2000 being close runner up
10
The Descent (2006,  R)
The Descent
This amainly not a monster movie, but when the monster appear it makes it that much more impactful. This is actually a excellent movie, but falls somewhat in the ratings when graded solely as a monster movie.
