The Big Lebowski (1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski 5.0 Stars
Typical Coen Brothers, if there is such a thing. Lots of randomness, but woven together seamlessly, as if a hippie, a trio of German techno-pop nihilists, a stolen rug, a severed toe and bowling were naturally meant to go together. That's great writing.

Shut the fuck up, Donny.

A coming-of-age comedy cleverly disguised as mindless humor. You're my boy, Blue!

Chinjeolhan geumjassi (Lady Vengeance) (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) (2005,  R)
Chinjeolhan geumjassi (Lady Vengeance) (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) 4.0 Stars
In Lady Vengeance, the lead character Geum-ja struggles with the idea of retribution and redemption, much like the protagonists of Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. Park gives his protagonists depth and more emotion than just anger, creating characters far deeper than typical characters of the revenge genre.

Yeong-ae Lee is beautiful and gives an equally beautiful performance. Min-sik Choi, the protagonist of Oldboy, finds himself on the other side of the coin as the target of Geum-ja's revenge.

The pace is slowest here than the other two films of Chan-wook Park's vengeance trilogy, but the theme is all the same. Also, this film has the least violence of the three-- yet, the retribution at the end is just as (bitter)sweet. It seems almost contradictory, but this film truly is a beautifully orchestrated end to a violently raw film trilogy.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006,  R)
Little Miss Sunshine 4.0 Stars
The greatest dramatic child performance I've ever seen. Time will tell if Abigail Breslin is a fluke, or the new Dakota Fanning. But for now, she is one of the best actresses out there, at any age.

The film itself is very original. So are the characters. And the comedian-in-a-serious-role formula works again here, with Steve Carell.

Beerfest (2006,  R)
Beerfest 1.5 Stars
Another string of gags tied together by a paper-thin plot-- the trademark of Broken Lizard. Super Troopers followed the same formula, but that film was far more entertaining because the underlying weak plot of that film doesn't get in the way of the comedy like it does here.

The plot of Beerfest-- an underground drinking game Olympics-- had far more comedic potential than the previous Broken Lizard films, but it was slowed down by a weak secret recipe sub-plot, perhaps developed as an attempt to make a well-rounded film. The addition of a storyline like that to a film like this just seems forced, and it takes precious screen time away from the comedy. I don't wanna see Mo'nique. I don't care if Great Gam Gam was a whore or not. I want Landfill to live (although his death does help set-up a pretty clever "resurrection" gag). If they had dropped all that and just focused on the competition aspect, this could've been great.
