Das weiße Band (The White Ribbon) (2009,  R)
Das weiße Band (The White Ribbon)
Finally I got to see this, my most anticipated movie of the year, and I'm so happy I wasn't disappointed, not even once! Michael Haneke is truly one of the greatest directors on contemporary cinema.
Is it a bold statement to compare this movie's quality to that from masters like Ingmar Bergman? I think in this case, I certainly can say that.
Visually fantastic, captures some characteristics of past masterpieces from the last decades and still makes the film seem fresh. The whole acting ensemble is amazingly talented. The story is engaging and full of mystery, Haneke leaves the audience to make their own conclusions because he knows he can do that! And we will all ask ourselves who really is guilry of the crimes, or do we have to think something completely different from the film's reality?
And not to forget the so-talked-about themes on Fascism, and makes all think that people might choose their own politics, but how they were raised and the environment they grew up on will affect future decisions.
So far, the best movie of the year, and a very difficult contender to beat! Also, I'm going to say it is Haneke's best film, therefore, one of the best movies of this decade.

Inglourious Basterds (2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
An instant classic and so far one of the best movies of the year, well, I wouldn't expect nothing less from Mr. Tarantino. He's back after so many years without any of his brilliant scripts and directing, with some of his most beloved trademarks: quirky dialouge, often funny characters, shots from up the ceiling, and intense violence. Above all, my respects to Christoph Waltz and I hope he gets either the best leading actor or best supporting actor this year, and Mélanie Laurent did an amazing job as well. A movie not to be missed.
3
Fish Tank (2010,  Unrated)
Fish Tank
This little film will be a winner! Katie Jarvis makes an amazing performance as a troubled 15 year old girl that dreams on becoming a hip-hop dancer. The story is interesting, Andrea Arnold did a great job and I hope this movie gets the respect it deserves this year.
4
Antichrist (2009,  Unrated)
Antichrist
Ok, so what does Lars von Trier have against women?
The first scene with the black and white slow motion is surprisingly beautiful. Then it turns crazy but calm, and ends completely out of control. A movie that is really hard to watch, but one of von Trier's best jobs! Charlotte Gainsbourg was AMAZING and so far the best performance I've seen this year.

(500) Days of Summer (2009,  PG-13)
(500) Days of Summer
A very sweet and fun movie with some good song selections and good story. It made me want to fall in love now haha.
6
Up (2009,  PG)
Up
The most "awww" movie I've seen for a long time! Very creative and with that Pixar-genius that never fails. Yet one of their most thrilling and action-packed. And yeah, I cried twice.
7
Coraline (2009,  PG)
Coraline
2009 began in the right way! The kids movie that is actually NOT for kids!
The formula for this movie was taking Alice in Wonderland, mixing it with Spirited Away and adding a little darkness, which makes it weird and even scary!
The story was "so-so", but oh my God, visually amazing! First film of the year that is about to get a nomination at the next awards season as best animated film! Go see it.
8
Drag Me to Hell (2009,  PG-13)
Drag Me to Hell
It was very fun to watch and has some twists I really didn't expect to happen! Great comedic-horror film!
9
Home (2009,  Unrated)
Home
If this documentary doesn't change your mind, at least will make you fall in love with Earth and its landscapes.
10
District 9 (2009,  R)
District 9
I really liked the direction it was facing through the first half, but then they really lost me when the clichés started to flourish.
11
Gran Torino (2009,  R)
Gran Torino
Film made fit for Mr. Eastwood. Though the rest of the cast did not make their best job, still has a very good script, which is funny at some parts despite of its racism, but is something I can avoid thinking of knowing Mr. Kowalski's intentions and how he learns immigrants are still PEOPLE.
12
Star Trek (2009,  PG-13)
Star Trek
I have not watched any other Star Trek movies, actually I did not know anything about Star Trek. Still I ventured myself into this, and I must say it's got to be the most thrilling and exciting sci-fi movie I've seen possibly since the original releases of Star Wars! You don't have to be an expert Trekkie to understand the story and characters and I liked that very much! Colors were stellar, and sound was over the top. It redefined the whole genre!
13
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008,  PG-13)
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Very cute movie. I think I fell in love with the Norah character!
14
Public Enemies (2009,  R)
Public Enemies
Meh, a typical gangster movie with cliché characters and situations. Actually I didn't find a plot to grab me, and all the characters were so flat and a little dumb. Hated the camera moving all around the room it kinda made me dizzy. Forgettable.
15
Gestación (2009,  Unrated)
Gestación
So, Esteban Ramirez is the most "succesful" Costa Rican director to date, just because he managed to produce 2 feature films. Though they're not really that good, I must say. With "Gestación" (Gestation) he made the same mistakes, he paid a lot of attention to the visual part but the story is really dull. It's true, some of the images are breathtaking, I would dare anyone to create scenes more beautiful of San José city anytime.
Once I heard the argument of a noted film-maker from Cuba saying that Costa Rica has potencial to make good cinema, but the main problem is the lack of great screenwriters. And this is one clear example of that. The dialogues felt like "pushing too hard" to create a message of social interest and sometimes when the characters talked it sounded a little too "dumb". Characters entered, said a few lines, and disappeared without any real purpose. And well, the performances weren't something I would call "great". Still, we are experiencing the rise of cinema in my country and I to see better projects in the future.
If you're not Costa Rican and see that they're showing this movie at a festival or something, go see it just to take a look at our city from the inside, but don't expect to be amazed with a great story.
16
The Hangover (2009,  R)
The Hangover
Hmm I remember laughing twice, but still it's obvious there are a lot of worse movies than this one. I mean, it could have Vince Vaughn or Will Ferrell in it.
17
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Ice Age 3) (2009,  PG)
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Ice Age 3)
Actually better than I expected, it has some funny scenes, sure it is cheesy and dumb but is a perfect movie just to relax and enjoy a little bit of quirkiness. Though some of the character development left me hanging clueless, still relatively enjoyable.
18
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
I always try to enjoy the Harry Potter films, I really do! But after noticing this is just the overused Harry Potter formula= good performances by the grown-ups + bad performances by the young ones + some magic tricks here and there... I realiced I sat for almost 2 hours and a half watching a series of teenager romantic drama scenes for a final 2 minute action scene and well the ending, but that's it. I was expecting something more interesting and something you could connect the dots to find a plot you actually care about... I didn't get it. Sorry. Oh, and some people just say "oh this movie is like a bridge for us to expect what will happen in the 7th..!", well the idea of a movie is to actually have a plot, not to be just a transition between one movie and the other.
19
Terminator Salvation (2009,  PG-13)
Terminator Salvation
Everything an action-movies loving guy wishes for.
20
Angels & Demons (2009,  PG-13)
Angels & Demons
At least I didn't fall asleep in this one, as with The DaVinci Code... That's something. Just a popcorn movie to spend some time and leaving your brain at the entrance, to get it back at the exit.
21
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009,  PG-13)
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
OMG, this has to be one of the worst pieces of junk I've seen in a while! Seriously, no plot at all, stupidity all over the place, "witty" dialogues to make people laugh (but in fact they were torturing)... Acutally, the whole movie was a torture! Damn and watching it with a stupid unknown girl next to me laughing every 5 seconds was probably the worst experience of my life.
I will give this 1 star instead of 1/2 star because the CGI guys know what they're doing.
