1
Watchmen (2009,  R)
Watchmen
Superior direction marries phenomenal perfs, especially that of JEH. The best film of the year, hands down (and it's only August). Give Watchmen a f'in Oscar, NOW.
2
Inglourious Basterds (2009,  R)
3
Zombieland (2009,  R)
4
District 9 (2009,  R)
5
Drag Me to Hell (2009,  PG-13)
Drag Me to Hell
Flashback to 80's horror when scares were genuinely frightening, and not just torture porn. All those years of The Evil Dead, Raimi still has it.
6
The Hurt Locker (2009,  R)
The Hurt Locker
Tremendously ambitious filmmaking that looks and feels like the real thing.
7
The Hangover (2009,  R)
The Hangover
If you don't think this movie is freaking hilarious you're a ruhtard.
8
Paranormal Activity (2009,  R)
Paranormal Activity
Truly frightening in an authentic way. No need for fast cuts or heavy f/x. Much of the film the camera is static and very little is happening, but you're definitely not bored. Eerie and fun.
9
I Love You, Man (2009,  R)
I Love You, Man
Honest humor blended with lighthearted love. A marriage made in heaven.
10
Adventureland (2009,  R)
Adventureland
A teen movie made for adults. This movie takes you back to years gone by and makes you reassess what you know and did and who you did it with. Kristen Stewart shows she has a lot more range than critics give her credit for in Twilight.
11
Star Trek (2009,  PG-13)
Star Trek
Biggest surprise of the year so far. I went in wanting to hate this movie, but came out loving that I didn't. Great performances and direction and a decent script.
12
The Brothers Bloom (2009,  PG-13)
The Brothers Bloom
Rian Johnson's follow up to Brick!!!! Eagerly anticipated this one and enjoyed it very much (although not as much as Brick). Irreverently funny and engaging. Makes you laugh out loud in parts.
13
Observe and Report (2009,  R)
Observe and Report
Raunchy, crass and laugh-out-loud hilarious. Chock full of great one-liners like: "Why would I want to blow up the Chick-fil-a. It's fucking delicious!?!"

Ray Liotta is perfect as the hard-ass detective opposite Seth Rogan.
14
(500) Days of Summer (2009,  PG-13)
(500) Days of Summer
Elevated by JGL master perf. The film dares to go to a place reserved for girls in teen movies, offering a retrospective on the chick-flick. JGL emotes what it's like to be lovestruck, heartbroken, relationally depressed and careerly suicidal. Unfortunately, Zooey D nearly wrecks the whole thing. She's not leading lady material, period. Midway through the pic you find yourself wondering what Tom sees in Summer and it's not because ZD isn't attractive, it's because her interpretation of Summer has only one gear, boring.
