There Will Be Blood (2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
Absolutely brilliant on every level.
The only default people find about in this movie would be the constant, piercing soundtrack, but I thought it was greatly exploited, as if it wants us to see that something big is going on in Daniel's mind.
But it's only in the second half of the movie that we discover Daniel Plainview's cruel side.
Daniel Day-Lewis is so flawless that I would say that he led the entire movie to its perfect result, but there is Paul Thomas Anderson, who hasn't disappointed me, on the contrary. Having directed and written two of the greatest movies ever (Boogie Nights and Magnolia), P.T. Anderson has created another classic that will remain incrusted in cinema history for ever. There Will Be Blood deserves every possible Oscar.

No Country for Old Men (2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
I LOVED IT.
I was expecting (when I watched the great previews) a masterpiece from No Country For Old Men. And it totally is !
Let's start with Ethan and Joel Cohen's imaginative, scary cleverness in their screenplay. And their direction. The Cohens have officially taken a great place in my love for movies.
Tommy Lee Jones was amazing, but I must mention Javier Bardem's performance, for which he completely deserves an Oscar nomination. What can I say about his character if it is not that he is one of the greatest bad guys in the cinema history ?

No Country For Old Men is perfrect.
I recommend it to everyone
3
Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement
When I first saw the Atonement trailer, I wasn't very interested to see it, as I wasn't interested to see Pride And Prejudice. I still liked very much James McAvoy and through the trailer, I thought it seemed like a beautiful film.
I finally decided to go to the movies and see Atonement, especially because it is the main leader in the Golden Globes nominations.
From the first image to the last, I was fascinated by the beauty of every single aspects this film shows. The direction, the screenplay, the acting, the photography, the art direction, the orignial score, everything was filled with passion and greatness that made me think that if it wasn't for No Country For Old Men, Atonement would definitely be the best movie of the year !
Don't be suprised that this magistral movie leads the Golden Globes, it totally earned it.

Bravo.

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) (2007,  PG-13)
Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
This won't really be a review because I feel like I can't describe how much I loved this movie. Everyone will find something to love in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, that remains one of the most touching movies I've seen, even though the fabulous director prefered to say: Life is worth living, instead of giving up.
Ovation to Mathieu Amalric, who made me feel his pain, his happiness.
And I cannot not mention one of the best direction of the year, by Julian Schnabel, who made the impossible come true.

Everyone, run see this !
5
Into the Wild (2007,  R)
Into the Wild
Wow...
The movie is as good as its theatrical trailer ! Two and a half hours of pure magic.
Sean Penn proves here that he directes movies as perfectly as he acts !
Excellent cinematography and exceptionnal acting, definitely one of my favorite of 2008, and of all time.
6
Michael Clayton (2007,  R)
Michael Clayton
It slowly became one of my personal favourites.
I love everything about that movie. The actors, firstly, the screenplay, the direction...

And it's the kind of movie I'd watch everyday.
7
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007,  R)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
I surely didn't see that coming...
It is pure perfection on every level. And if it wasn't for Javier Bardem, Casey Affleck could take the Oscar right now.
I fell in love with this beautiful movie.
8
La Vie en Rose (La Mome) (2007,  PG-13)
La Vie en Rose (La Mome)
I knew I would love it. I saw a couple of seconds of Marion Cotillard's performance at the last Oscar ceremony, but I didn't think that the hole movie would be that powerful.

Yes Marion Cotillard will go down in history, but the movie must get some credit too. Pretty perfect in its genre, be ready to get every possible emotion.
9
American Gangster (2007,  R)
American Gangster
After a second viewing, I'd say this movie comes very close to perfection. I think it does reinvent something in the genre.

The first time I saw this, in theatres, it seemed too long, and I would say it is, but when you watch it at home, and you are at power to watch it on two nights, its running time isn't a problem anymore. Also, I didn't get all of the story almost a year ago, when I saw this. Now, I understood every line of its great screenplay and loved every single scene.

Russell Crowe was great, but Denzel Washington bore a big part of the movie with his exceptional interpretation of Frank Lucas. He was awesome to watch, really.

And, finally, I'm one of those who love Ridley Scott, no matter what he sometimes gives us. Here, he offers a movie that will be remembered, at least by me.

A really excellent film.
10
Eastern Promises (2007,  R)
Eastern Promises
That is a GREAT movie ! One of the best I've seen lately ! All the actors were perfect, the direction was more than respectable and the screenplay was incredibly well written... I recommand this for everyone who liked A History Of Violence.
11
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007,  R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
With a sixth cooperation between one of the most talented acotrs of our generation and an imaginative director that brought something new to the cinema, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton surprise once more with something unique. By watching Burton's Sweeney Todd, you don't really know what to think, but what's sure is that you can't resist to letting you go along the songs, sung by great actors that showed us again they still have talents we didn't know about. Johnny Depp is now very far from his legendary Jack Sparrow, darker and scarier, while everyone will see in Helena Bonham Carter's Miss Lovett the surprising Bellatrix Lestrange she recently played in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Which doesn't hide the fact that both of main actors gave huge performances, accompanied with a direction from the most colorful ones.
Expect something new from Burton's musical: blood. Blood that could fill an entire river. But you still can't look away while Sweeney Todd is cutting throats by throats, scene by scene. Because Tim Burton and his magistal talent for making special movies found an astonishing way to put a certain - and intriguing - beauty in the very violent scenes of thi new masterpiece.
Filled with passion, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street happens to be a very pleasant Christmas gift.
12
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007,  PG-13)
The Bourne Ultimatum
It is extraordinary how each one of the Bourne movies is as great as the others. The Bourne Ultimatum was not deceiving at all... it was such a good movie that I'm still hesitating for giving it another half star ! And Paul Greengrass did an excellent job with the direction !
13
I'm Not There (2007,  R)
I'm Not There
Cate Blanchett.
Heath Ledger.
Christian Bale.

Beautiful. I loved that movie.
Ok, I didn't quite get everything, because I didn't know Bob Dylan at all, but the movie itself and its magnificent actors were completely awesome.
14
[Rec] (2007,  R)
15
The Mist (2007,  R)
The Mist
One of the best, if not THE best horror movie I've seen in my whole life.
In Stephen King's Mist, it absolutely took supernatural creatures to show the true nature of humanity. And it's brilliantly shown by Frank Darabont.
Marcia Gay Harden brought something more to this film with another amazing performance.
And not to mention the several scary scenes, the end was one of the most troubling, and one of the very best I have ever seen.
16
Sunshine (2007,  R)
Sunshine
I think it is a great sci-fi movie. Although there are some déjà-vu scenes, it stays orignial, scary and intense.
17
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Following Cuaron's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, this fifth establishement is the best. I totally loved the direction from David Yates and I'm glad he will be back in the HP team.
18
Ratatouille (2007,  G)
Ratatouille
One of the best animated movies. The best of the year for sure.

Greatly made in every aspects.
19
Lions for Lambs (2007,  R)
Lions for Lambs
It's frustrating me to see the critics rating this movie as if it was the worst of the year !
When I saw the theatrical trailer, I was totally waiting for the movie it actually shows: a movie where people talk... Talk about one of the most important subject of our time. I was not waiting for a thriller with conspiracies in every corner like the critics seemed to !
Okay, maybe the story was a little slow (but don't get me wrong, every lines were astonishing and the movie contains some breathtaking war scenes), but I thought each word was chosen perfectly and said by actors at their best. Ahh the actors ! Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise were completely admirable ! And well Robert Redford, without compting in his excellent direction job, acted greatly.
By forgetting what the critics said negatively about the abrupt ending, on my side, I thought it was very clever.

Finally, like it or not, it's still a movie every one should see.
20
Funny Games (2008,  R)
21
The Kingdom (2007,  R)
The Kingdom
Very good, and very Michael Mann-ish, plus an interesting realistic side of the terrorism. Very entertaining.

If you are careful, you'll see that the ending is quite troubling.
22
Things We Lost in the Fire (2007,  R)
Things We Lost in the Fire
Surprisingly great.
Remarkable performance from both leading actors.

Very touching movie.
23
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007,  R)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
This movie could have been a lot more entertaining, but it still hasn't disappointed me. This remains a quality movie on every level.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was magistral, and I even liked Ethan Hawke. The direction was great too, but the dark screenplay was the best thing of the film.
Very troubling.
24
Hairspray (2007,  PG)
Hairspray
Hairspray has many characters, and each one's characteristics are perfectly shown through happy lines and excellent music. Every images put a smile on your face and the atmosphere makes you want to stand up and dance. Hairspray made me believe for two hours that everything was possible.

I didn't really knew Shankman's work until now, but I think he did a great job (for direction and choregraphies) and that we owe him a lot for what the new version of Hairspray is.

I haven't enjoyed myself like this with a movie this year.
25
Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (2007,  PG-13)
26
Charlie Wilson's War (2007,  R)
Charlie Wilson's War
What is wrong with moralising movies ? Critics seem lately to bring these lasts down and I really don't know why. Yes, sometimes movies push their message too far, but are these morales what we were looking for, a couple years ago ?
Well, Charlie Wilson's War is NOT a moralising film. It uses its funny and ironic sides to bring the subject to life. And it is magically well done.
With a more than efficient direction and a rich and funny screenplay, Charlie Wilson's War remains an unserious political movie, that we must take seriously.
The high point of Charlie Wilson's War, is undeniably Tom Hanks. I won't hide I missed him very much since his last movie Da Vinci Code. He's returned here with one of the most powerful performances of the year, making us remember the legend we knew some years ago. Every other actors gave a decent performance, especially Philip Seymour Hoffman, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role.
We haven't heard very much from this film, but I recommend it to everyone.
Very great film.
27
Superbad (2007,  R)
Superbad
Hilarious.
It's so stupid, that it gets intelligent.
28
Death Proof (Grindhouse Presents) (2007,  R)
29
Les 3 p'tits cochons (2007,  Unrated)
Les 3 p'tits cochons
Really true and touching movie.
One of the most hilarious movies I've seen.
30
99 francs (2007,  Unrated)
99 francs
Really creative and entertaining direction.
31
Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror) (2007,  R)
Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror)
Let's be clear on this: Planet Terror is not one of the best film of the year.
And it's stupid... but yet totally smart.
It's so original and genius, after watching this, I felt like I NEEDED to see this unique movie.
I don't know if we can definite this film as a modern classic, but I think everyone should see this.
32
Knocked Up (2007,  R)
33
Rendition (2007,  R)
Rendition
Good screenplay,
good acting.
Good film !
It's not the best film of the year, but still a great achievement
34
300 (2007,  R)
35
Live Free or Die Hard (2007,  PG-13)
36
3:10 to Yuma (2007,  R)
3:10 to Yuma
The movie was generally great ! But yet, I have the deja-vu feeling... Even Crowe and Bale's acting seemed like I've already seen them somewhere. Anyway... it was still very entertaining and the art direction was magnificient.
37
Gone Baby Gone (2007,  R)
Gone Baby Gone
I'll start by saying that this was a GOOD movie. But still nowhere near what Mystic River is !
Why ? Well, unfortunately, Gone Baby Gone stood from the movies I've seen lately by its very exagerated screenplay. Oh I know perhaps I should blame Dennis Lehane's novel instead of the movie's screenplay, but still, it was not really credible.
On the other hand, Ben Affleck's Gone Baby Gone had its qualities. And let's begin by Affleck's impressing direction debut. And, him and his brother Casey make a really good team.
Once again, Ed Harris was flawless, but Morgan Freeman didn't impress me, even if he was not bad at all.
To finish, I have to say that, even with its hard-to-believe ending, this movie has some very heart-breaking images, with a thematic story I'm not ready to forget soon...
38
Across the Universe (2007,  PG-13)
39
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007,  PG-13)
Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Magnificent picture.
Magnificent Cate Blanchett.
Good movie...

L'Âge des ténèbres (The Age of Ignorance) (Days of Darkness) (2007,  Unrated)
L'Âge des ténèbres (The Age of Ignorance) (Days of Darkness)
Despite the almost unanimous critics in the whole world, I was completely satisfied with Denys Arcand's latest film.

Third of a trilogy that mostly made known the genius Canadian director/screenplayer, L'Âge des Ténèbres will represent Canada for the 2007 Academy Awards best picture in a foreign language. I can assure you that it will not win, and that it will let most of the critics to come not very pleased, but everyone will be able to find something to love, to admire and to remember in this magical movie. The dark message is maybe a little too much pushed in the scenes, some scenes that leads you nowhere sometimes, but the -absurd AND realistic- exemples of our desintegrated society will wake something in every viewers.

I cannot not mention Marc Labrèche's performance, which troubled me, for it was so deep, so real, so perfect. I hope this actor, not really known outside Quebec, will take some well-deserved awards here and there.

Finally, we have to remember that Denys Arcand is one of the two Canadian who has ever made a movie that has been nominated for an Oscar. He had three nominations and took home the statuette for best picture in foreign language for his masterpiece Les Invasions Barbares in 2003. And in my personal opinion, with L'Âge des Ténèbres, he hasn't let me down yet.
41
I Am Legend (2007,  PG-13)
I Am Legend
In my personal opinion, I Am Legend redefined something... Something for the horror drama style during the 100 minutes of pure... entertaining loneliness.
Sorry for my words, I just can't find the way to describe it... I did not read the novel it is based on, which has been written more than fifty years ago, and I did not see the two or so previous adaptations of this novel. But I Am Legend couldn't be better than that.
With a very, very touching scene (in my opinion, of course) and some taken from the scariest I've seen in my whole life, this movie is a total must for everyone that thinks would like something in this movie.
The end is nowhere near perfection (it doesn't change the fact that the movie is great), but the first hour is how every movies in its genre should be like.
The technical aspects are astonishing, the direction is colorful and Will Smith gives a good performance.
42
The Kite Runner (2008,  PG-13)
The Kite Runner
Satisfying adaptation of the great novel. Not Marc Forster's best.
43
Reign Over Me (2007,  R)
Reign Over Me
Touching.

CAN I GET YOUR ATTENTION, EVERYONE ?

> ADAM SNADLER CAN ACT.<

Why wouldn't he make more movies like this one ?
44
Ocean's Thirteen (2007,  PG-13)
45
Charlie Bartlett (2007,  R)
Charlie Bartlett
A complete surprise to the stomach.
It really joined me.
I fell in love with this movie.
46
Disturbia (2007,  PG-13)
Disturbia
I KNOW there are many flaws in this movie, and I think everyone expected it before seeing Disturbia...
BUT, on my side, (and I don't know why) I FELL IN LOVE WITH THAT MOVIE ! And wow, Shia Labeouf gave a really impressive performance !
47
4 Luni, 3 Saptamâni si 2 Zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) (2007,  R)
4 Luni, 3 Saptamâni si 2 Zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days)
A very important film, well-done and greatly acted.

I still didn't like it that much.
The story could have been told in an hour, and then I wouldn't have been looking at my watch every 5 minutes.

I can't understand why everyone's screaming how this movie is great. It surely is a film to watch, but except some key scenes, it bored me to death.
48
We Own the Night (2007,  R)
49
Transformers (2007,  PG-13)
Transformers
God it was so looong ! I almost fell asleep during a battle scene... Shia Labeouf was the only good thing in the movie... The filmakers are totally crazy to even THINK of making a second opus !
The special effects were great, but still, there has to have something else than stupid toys beating other toys !
50
The Brave One (2007,  R)
The Brave One
Could have been so much better... The end was so deceiving. Yet, the first hour was better... even great. But there's still that other hour.
51
Love in the Time of Cholera (2007,  R)
Love in the Time of Cholera
Interesting movie, with good acting.

Has some memorable scenes.

Love in the Time of Cholera is a good movie, well made, nothing more.
52
Young People Fucking (Y.P.F.) (2007,  Unrated)
Young People Fucking (Y.P.F.)
Decent.

Isn't as serious as it should have been.
53
Beowulf (2007,  PG-13)
Beowulf
Souldn't even be compared to 300.
I felt some pity for the screenplayers, who desperatly tried to do something good, but the result doesn't even derserve to be brought on our screens.
The first 15 minutes, the visual effects were really bad, as though I was watching Shrek, but then the astonishing technology from today appeared slowly... It seems silly, but it's true !
Anyways... not bad, but surely nowhere near 300.
54
Spider-Man 3 (2007,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 3
Great action. But then ? Nothing. Style, but no containing...
Pure Hollywood and no screenplay.
55
August Rush (2007,  PG)
56
Vacancy (2007,  R)
57
National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007,  PG)
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Looks like they took the same fuckin' screenplay from the first one, and changed the name.

He kidnappes the president of the United States, and everything will be forgotten only if he proves his great great great grand-father was innocent ?
Bullshit.
58
Them (Ils) (2007,  R)
59
Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007,  G)
Mr. Bean's Holiday
Rowan Atkinson's faces may be worth the viewing. Otherwise, just pass it.
60
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007,  PG)
