Stagecoach (1939,  Unrated)
Stagecoach
A classic example of formal shot aesthetics. Stagecoach serves not only as a fine academic example but as a rousing template western. A young John Wayne ensures legendary status after years of working in obscurity.

La Règle du Jeu (The Rules of the Game) (1950,  Unrated)
La Règle du Jeu (The Rules of the Game)
The original upstairs, downstairs examination. The sheer depth of material that Renoir is able to capture in his long takes is mighty impressive. As is the dramatic but still inherently complex emotionally honest lives of the film's many characters.

Gone With the Wind (1939,  G)
Gone With the Wind
When you actually sit down and watch the thing and try to cram aside the daunting prospect of its length its actually a lot of fun. Its certainly epic, but it also sucks the viewer in so that the drama becomes instantly fascinating if not entirely relatable. Oh and Harrison Ford was definitely watching Clark Gable in this before developing his Han Solo performance.
