Cat People
YES! The first "bus" (or fake out jump scare) happens here. Val Lewton utilizes Tourner's mastery of shadows to create a terrifying world witha budget of about $5. The unearthly Simone Simon adds to the proceedings as does the hyper literate screenwriting of DeWitt Bodeen.

Road to Morocco (1942,  Unrated)
Road to Morocco
For all their hokiness the "Road" films could venture into some seriously modern territory They were self-aware, loaded with entendre and not abve an occassinal moment or two of surrealism. The self-awareness only serves to help win over the audience as it coaxes viewers into liking Hope and Crosby more and more. This one os my favorite because they sing the emminently catchy "Road to Morrocco" which was ably parodied in Family Guy.
