The Searchers (1956,  Unrated)
The Searchers
The most classic of all westerns. John Ford has never been better. Archetypal and iconic. John Ford explores this rascist character with thoughtfulness without ever losing sight of the entertaining story.

Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut (A Man Escaped)
The greatest prison break film ever made. Bresson's attention to detail is mind-blowing. There's also a spiritual dimension to his films that is totally captivating. Not to mention, his brilliant sound design!

Biruma no Tategoto (The Burmese Harp) (1956,  Unrated)
Biruma no Tategoto (The Burmese Harp)
An exquisite, dark, yet heartwarming tale of a WWII soldier who becomes a buddhist monk. It may borderline on sentimental but the story is so strong and compelling that it's difficult not to love this visually stunning anti-war film.

7 Men From Now (Seven Men from Now) (1956,  Unrated)
7 Men From Now (Seven Men from Now)
Concise and eloquent. A perfect gem of a western that says so much with so little. The characters are truly memorable and archetypal. They sure don't make them like this anymore. No nonsense and straight to the point.

The Killing (1956,  Unrated)
The Killing
A great crime film. It put Kubrick on the map. He attempts film noir with great results. Simple, smart and entertaining. Tarantino borrowed a thing or two from this early Kubrick film.
