I would say this is the best film of its year. Absolutely amazing achievement from Alfonso Cuaron, which successfully ran me through a gamut of emotions. Incredible cinematography, incredible performances, incredible score, everything about this film is incredible. See it now.

Simply brilliant film from Todd Field (In The Bedroom).
3
Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple (2006,  Unrated)
Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple
This documentary is probably one of the scarier films I've ever seen. It's amazing where a man can go inside his own head.
4
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)

A true endurance test from Lynch, but one that I feel pays off.
8
Slither (2006,  R)
Slither
Hilarious horror-comedy with goo to spare. One to be enjoyed on multiple occasions. Great companion piece to Fred Dekker's 80s horror-comedy 'Night of the Creeps.'

Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower)
Absolutely sumptuous visuals in this Zhang Yimou outing, which is well worth multiple viewings.

Deservedly won the oscar for best foreign film.

Art School Confidential (2006,  R)
Art School Confidential
What can I say? Despite the fact that it took me forever to finally getting around to seeing this film, I absolutely loved it. I'm a fan of Zwigoff's work, and thought this was a first rate satire of the pretensions of 'artist types.' Not sure what it was about this movie that grabbed me, but I loved it.
15
Little Miss Sunshine (2006,  R)

This movie made me laugh until I was just about in tears.
24
Idiocracy (2006,  R)
Idiocracy
Hilarious Mike Judge film about what the world would be like if the human race devolved into an even stupider creature than we already are. If we have to suffer through another Republican administration like the joke we have now, this may be a cautionary tale of things to come.
25
The Boss of it All (Direktøren for det hele) (2007,  Unrated)
The Boss of it All (Direktøren for det hele)
Lars Von Trier doing comedy? Hell, I'm on board.
26
Fast Food Nation (2006,  R)
Fast Food Nation
Some solid performances amidst a disjointed narrative didn't sink this movie for me, as I felt it had a lot of important things to say, especially on a racial and socio-economic wavelength. The problems addressed in this film are things that can't be solved simply by 'taking a stand': They are generations old problems that have gotten worse and worse as each generation ignores the previous repercussions. If more films like this were listened to, maybe things would start changing for the better.
27
Sherrybaby (2006,  R)
Sherrybaby
All I can say is Maggie Gyllenhaal is incredible. If nothing else, watch it for her.
28
The Night Listener (2006,  R)
The Night Listener
Though I have not read the source material, I felt this film on its own was atmospheric and well constructed, with solid performances, especially from Toni Collette.
29
Bubble (2006,  R)
Bubble
I loved this strange little slice of American cinema in every sense of the word: A cast of complete unknowns doing a credible job in a very insular piece.
30
The Queen (2006,  PG-13)
The Queen
Wow. Helen Mirren is incredible.
31
L'iceberg (,  Unrated)

36
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006,  R)
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
A captivating, if a bit overlong, tale. Beautifully realized and well directed, with some great performances overall.
37
Strangers with Candy (2005,  R)

What can I say: I love the show, I love the movie.

La Science des Rêves (The Science of Sleep) (2006,  R)
La Science des Rêves (The Science of Sleep)
Michel Gondry's quirky little love story has its flaws, but overall it's cute and fun.
