East Is East (1999,  R)
East Is East
Very funny film, one of the best Brit comedies.
2
Dead Man's Shoes (2006,  Unrated)
Dead Man's Shoes
One of the best British films you'll see. The story is violent and tragic and I didn't expect to like it, but I did.
Well worth watching.
3
This Is England (2007,  Unrated)
This Is England
A very realistic and poignant story about 80's Britain and the skinhead culture.
The story focuses on a young lad and his experiences once taken under the wing of a local gang. Harsh viewing at times but this has some brilliant performances!
4
Snatch. (2001,  R)
5
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007,  R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Gloriously gruesome with Johnny Depp brilliant as ever taking the role of the 'Demon Barber'. I loved the visuals in this, the singing did grate on me at little at first but I got used to it throughout the movie. I thought Helena Bonham-Carter shone as Mrs. Lovett and the other characters were pretty flawless too. Recommended, especially for Tim Burton fans.
6
Secrets & Lies (1996,  R)
Secrets & Lies
I really enjoyed this movie.. funny yet a bit of a weepy at the same time. Brenda Blethyn is a great actress.
7
Notes on a Scandal (2006,  R)
Notes on a Scandal
Judi dench played a great role as the sinister character in this story - it was a very creepy performance. A dark & twisted psychological drama.
8
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001,  R)
9
Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason (2004,  R)
10
Love + Hate (2005,  Unrated)
Love + Hate
A simple yet compelling story about racism, love & loyalty.
A white boy who has adopted the racist nature of his family & friends soon questions his attitude when he falls in love with an asian girl. The girl too feels loyalty for her own family & her brothers hypocritical views (asians shouldn't mix and yet he is seeing a white girl!) are an added pressure to her. Will love conquer all?
This was filmed with such raw emotion that the realism it portrays really grabs you. Brilliant stuff.
11
Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement
Great casting for the complex characters that this movie is based around ~ and a classic story of love and how damaging lies can be.
Visually quite pleasant and I wasn't expecting the little twist in the story towards the end - that made the film all the more enjoyable.
12
The Edge of Love (2008,  R)
The Edge of Love
Loosely based on Dylan Thomas and his life during WWII - his marriage to Caitlin (Sienna Miller) and the couples friendship/relationship with his first love Vera Phillips (Keira Knightley). Engaging performances from the four main stars combined with a beautiful backdrop made this film lovely to watch.
Although this was just an account of a person's life - with no real 'ending' as such, I still really enjoyed the movie.
13
Bronson (2009,  R)
Bronson
The filming style is striking, mixing the story of the notorious criminal Charles Bronson with a theatrical one-man show - probably quite a suitable subcontext.
I thought Tom Hardy (RocknRolla) was almost unrecognisable but absolutely outstanding playing Bronson himself.
Fan's of British films should enjoy this but don't expect a brutal movie, there is a very comedic presence throughout - highlighting Bronson as a cocky fame-seeker rather than delving into the crimes he commits.
14
The Bank Job (2008,  R)
The Bank Job
Based on a ture story & an intriguing one at that.
Good performances from the cast & a plot with enough twists to keep you guessing as to how it's all going to end.
Don't expect any hollywood style action - this is a British old school style heist movie and the story is dominated by scheming, mystery & corruption. Quite good - better than I thought.
15
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994,  R)
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Lovely British rom-com.
16
28 Days Later (2003,  R)
28 Days Later
I take it back, I rated this really badly when I first tried to watch it because I couldn't get into it. Having seen the film again - I actually found it quite entertaining. Its a very modern take on the zombie movies we're used to but I still don't think it lives up to the hype -"scary as hell" it isn't!
17
28 Weeks Later... (2007,  R)
28 Weeks Later...
I thought that this was better than the first movie because the action started much sooner. It was as gory as the first & had some good effects (namely London streets on fire!).
18
RocknRolla (2008,  R)
RocknRolla
Cool British gangster flick with a great soundtrack, completely what you would expect from Guy Ritchie.
Likeable characters and similar interlinking story to his other films.. not as good as Snatch though!
19
Rita, Sue and Bob Too (1986,  R)
Rita, Sue and Bob Too
I thought this was hilarious, a 'British working-class' comedic drama at its best.
20
Imagine Me & You (2006,  R)
Imagine Me & You
This is a sweet movie in the traditional British Rom-Com sense, so you'll like it if you're a fan of these kind of movies.
However- I didn't like the Hugh Grant-alike performance of Matthew Goode! That was something that started to irritate me during the film - the story was good though.
21
About a Boy (2002,  PG-13)
About a Boy
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Heartwarming!
22
The Full Monty (1997,  R)
23
Bend It Like Beckham (2003,  PG-13)
24
The Queen (2006,  PG-13)
25
Shaun of the Dead (2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead
A parody of the zombie genre which is not only funny yet has some genuinely touching moments. Its a rom-com of a different kind, which i didn't think I'd like but it was definitely worth the watch.
26
Mum & Dad (2008,  Unrated)
Mum & Dad
A Polish girl is tricked by a work 'friend' and ends up being imprisoned by a psychopathic family. You can imagine that this would happen.. and thats the awful part. The 'kids' in this film try and outdo each other for affection from the sick 'mum & dad' just to stay in favour. The story relies on mind games aswell as gruesome moments (but strangely wasn't as bad in the latter as I imagined it would be). Has a great ending too.
Still a horribly twisted, weird & gory movie - perfect for the British horror genre.
27
Outlaw (2007,  R)
28
The Krays (1990,  R)
29
A Fish Called Wanda (1988,  R)
30
Crush (2002,  R)
Crush
Good British chick flick.
31
Love Actually (2003,  R)
Love Actually
I was never interested in watching this but I'm glad I did.
It stars the best of British acting, is sweet (sometimes sickly I admit) & humourous (the kid thats in love, Bill Nighy etc) & somewhat festive too.
32
Nanny McPhee (2006,  PG)
Nanny McPhee
Great family movie.
33
Trainspotting (1996,  R)
34
Oliver! (1968,  G)
Oliver!
Classic musical - terrific story and soundtrack!
35
Little Voice (1998,  R)
36
Eden Lake (2008,  R)
Eden Lake
I think the fear factor with this film is the 'reality' as such that this kind of situation could happen. The story is filled with plenty of tension and the ending has a decent twist to it.
Good movie.
37
My Summer of Love (2004,  R)
My Summer of Love
Interesting & well-acted I thought.
38
Son of Rambow (2007,  PG-13)
Son of Rambow
I couldn't quite get into this & the pace of the movie never really picks up.
The performances were enjoyable & I liked the 80's theme but the plot has similarities to the film MickyBo and Me -which in comparison is far better in my opinion.
It was alright but I expected to like it more than I did (I'll probably watch it again at some point to see if I can appreciate it more!).
39
Anita & Me (2002,  Unrated)
Anita & Me
This Brit-Asian movie is basically a coming-of-age story with humourous moments. Not as good as East Is East & Bend It Like Beckham - but I liked this too.
40
Notting Hill (1999,  PG-13)
Notting Hill
A cheesy rom-com with a matching soundtrack. Rhys Ifans stole the show the moments he was on screen - Julia Roberts was great as per & Hugh did his charming/fumbling romantic guy routine. It was good, I liked it.
41
Hot Fuzz (2007,  R)
Hot Fuzz
Funny in parts with its silly sense of humour ~ if you liked Shaun Of The Dead then you're bound to like this too.
42
Bitter Moon (1992,  R)
43
Human Traffic (2000,  R)
Human Traffic
British movie about clubbing & drugs.. absolutely mental & worth a watch!
44
Vera Drake (2004,  R)
Vera Drake
The movie starts off as a simple story about a woman (Vera Drake - played brilliantly by Imelda Staunton) and her family living in 1950's England. Amongst carrying out other duties & favours, Vera Drake happens to be whats called a 'backstreet abortionist', she helps women with unwanted pregnancies illegally induce a miscarriage - until the law catches up with her.
I'm sure this movie topic isn't to everybodys taste, but this was a powerful & moving film.
45
Driving Lessons (2006,  PG-13)
Driving Lessons
Really sweet & quite funny too.
46
Five Children and It (5 Children & It) (2004,  Unrated)
Five Children and It (5 Children & It)
Not as good as I remember the tv series being, but its a fun movie and I'm sure kids would like it.
47
Chicken Run (2000,  G)
48
Mrs. Henderson Presents (2006,  R)
Mrs. Henderson Presents
Judi Dench was great in this humorous movie.
49
Time Bandits (1981,  PG)
50
Jude (1996,  R)
51
Kidulthood (2006,  R)
Kidulthood
Good film - stereotypical view of British Teenagers.
52
Mean Machine (2002,  R)
53
Keeping Mum (2005,  R)
Keeping Mum
Amusing black comedy that was more enjoyable than I'd thought it would be. No over-bearing performances made this quite an entertaining movie, liked the role of Maggie Smith - the story reminded me a little of Serial Mom.
Not bad at all.
54
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969,  PG)
55
The Cottage (2008,  Unrated)
The Cottage
A British comedy horror (a la Shaun Of The Dead) which is only really let down by the slow intro to the story which sets the scene for the better half of the movie.
If you can stick with it, it does improve!
*** SPOILER ***
The second half of this movie has better gags & becomes reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw Massacre ~ best part was probably what happens to Jennifer Ellison's character too! Not Bad.
56
A Room for Romeo Brass (2000,  R)
A Room for Romeo Brass
A good movie which appears to start off as a pretty simplistic tale of friendship until it turns more sinister.
Paddy Considine gives a great performance as the eccentric but unhinged loner.
57
Nil by Mouth (1997,  R)
58
The Children (2008,  R)
The Children
A low budget british horror about a simple family christmas holiday that turns 'the children' unexplainably (literally) into a bunch of little Chuckys!![Child's Play].
There were a few intense moments which horror fans may enjoy but I found it disappointing that you never really understand why it all happened.
Just an OK film, not a bad effort for the British horror genre.
59
Brick Lane (2008,  PG-13)
60
Essex Boys (2000,  R)
61
Dog Soldiers (2002,  R)
