Best of the 80s
Even if the 80s spawned some of the most disgusting styles, it gave us a lot of great movies.

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980, PG)
The same as A New Hope, but more. Excitement more than you could have imagined. The battle of Hoth, a sight to be remembered. And in the Bespin cloud city, drama like has never been seen before, as the heroes are betrayed and handed over to their mortal enemy, Han is taken away, and Luke discovers that his ultimate foe is also his father. Why, as Vader says the words, do we shiver to the bone? |

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983, PG)
"The Climactic Conclusion", as original advertising called it, and climactic it was. We see the brave rescue of Han Solo, and of course, the ulitmate duel. Jedi versus Sith. Father and Son. The inner struggle. Leading to the redemption of Anakin Skywalker, and restored balance. The Empire has fallen, and why do we find ourselves as excited as the rebels? Because no other film is so real, bringing us right there, to a galaxy far, far away. |

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986, PG)
I was so pleasantly surprised by this movie. I watched it only because of its popularity. I like to watch all the classics, even though more often than not, I dont care for them half as much as most ppl. But, I like to know what ppl are talking about. I thought Ferris Bueller would be just another 80s teen movie. Was I ever wrong! This movie is so much fun, and I am actually a little sad that I didnt watch it a long time ago. Ferris is an incredible character. You gotta love him. |

TRON (1982, PG)
This was nothing like I expected. It flet like an epic, fantastical journey. Looking at the poster now, it reminds me of old fantasy movies such as Conan or Star Wars. It was totally in that spirit, only in a different setting, and a very interesting one. I suspected somewhat, because of how often this is compared to The Matrix, but I didnt really know how it would be related. The world was wonderfully imaginative. I felt like a kid caught in a dream, like Flynn did. |

Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior) (1981, R)
A great action flick. I thought of several other movies while watching this. Mainly Doomsday, Waterworld, and Resident Evil: Extinction. They were all obviously ripping this off, but if you liked any of them you will love this. The whole story is build up to a chase scene. The mother of all chase scenes that you know is coming from the beginning. Even with all the built up anticipation, it doesnt disappoint. Loved seeing Virginia Hey. |

A Chorus Line (1985, PG-13)
This was pretty interesting. The whole movie was one long audition. The director cut it down from hundreds to 16, then we got to know those 16 pretty well, until he cut it to 8. But I didnt really get the end. Was it an imagined tribute to all who tried out? I didnt think it was possible for Paul to actually come back, and there is no need for a two hundred person chorus line. But, if you like this kind of dancing or musicals, you would probably enjoy this. |

Willow (1988, PG)
Another entertaining 80s fantasy, in the likes of Krull and Excalibur, but better than both, although not by much. Some very magical moments, some endearing characters, and an enchanting adventure. Perfect for fans of the classic fantasy formula. I especially enjoyed the design of the world, and the new races such as the Nelwyn and the Brownies. Considering the calm pace of the movie up to that point, I was impressed with the climactic conclusion. And it had a perfect ending, which you always need in a fantasy, in my opinion. |

Red Sonja (1985, PG-13)
Of course it has all the inevitable bad qualities of an 80s fantasy movie. Bad acting, silly swordfighting, predictable villains. But really, its better than a lot of them. So its no Revenge of the Sith with the swordplay, but I was still surprised at how real it looked...for an 80s fantasy. And I found the story more interesting than its reputation led me to believe. The character Red Sonja is a pleasure to watch. I really hope Rose McGowen does her justice. |

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (Mad Max 3) (1985, PG-13)
I think the series jumped the shark a bit with this one. Underground pig farms, Tina Turner, Thunderdome itself, and a tribe of children living in a forest out of nowhere in the middle of the desert who think Max is the second coming? The kids were the last straw for me. After that, there was no way I could take this movie seriously. Although, in the end there was some good action that at least made this not a complete waste of time. |
