The Lair of the White Worm (1988,  R)
The Lair of the White Worm
Near the top of my guilty pleasure list. Not as much scary as weird with a young Hugh Grant developing his trademark hem-haw style and a stunning Amanda Donohoe as the dryly witty rich lady with a dark, ancient secret. Leonard Maltin encapsulates it best: "Bizarre, campy, and altogether outlandish." After I read that, I knew I had to see it!

Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans (1987,  R)
Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans
"You have to get up pretty early in the morning to catch the Prince of Thieves."

"But it IS pretty early in the morning!!"

The most entertaining sword & sandal flick ever made, largely because the cast are in on the joke. The sets are cheesy, the budget minimal, and everyone knows it and nothing is taken seriously. References to Hawaii Five-O, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Laugh-In, and Loony Tunes among others that pepper the script add to the silly fun. Monique Gabrielle is alternately adorable and sexy in a dual role while chisel-chinned John Terleskey mugs and wisecracks his way as the title hero. The DVD commentary is a hoot as Terleskey, co-star Toni Naples, and director Jim Wynorski reminisce about the 3-week shoot in rural Argentina, while pointing out a bald tire and parked Volvo in various shots.

Cube 2 - Hypercube (2003,  R)
Cube 2 - Hypercube
'Cube 2: Hypercube' A Multidimensional Thriller

Now that I've seen 'Cube 2', I realize that 'Saw' is nothing more than a gorified ripoff. There are puzzles, sometimes solutions, many questions, and constant anxiety during 'Cube 2' which reveals its secrets slowly and cunningly. I have not seen the first 'Cube' so whether this sequel is a mere rehash, I cannot say - on it's own terms, I was engrossed in the plight of the participants. Some hammy acting from a couple of the male actors, but Kari Matchett is a name I will remember - her face is easy to as she closely resembles Cate Blanchett. The ending is somewhat disappointing and provides no closure, but perhaps I have to see the first and next entires to really understand what happenend. Recommended for fans of 'Memento.'

Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
'Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!' A Camp Classic

Never seen a Russ Meyer flick before, and with that classic title, how can you lose? Surprisingly entertaining, the acting is full-bore serious camp and some great lines. "I think everyone should see America," says a gas-station attendant while staring at the ringleading hellion's cavernous cleavage, to which she acidly retorts, "Well you won't find it down there, Columbus!"
