Brokeback Mountain (2005,  R)
Brokeback Mountain
This is fantastic. Ang Lee's quiet, intense direction, two wonderful and subtle actors, a great script - why on earth this film did not win the Oscar is beyond my comprehension.
A big minus was homophobic idiots in the audience, maybe IQ tests should be conducted before entering the theatre. If someone is too immature to deal with love in all its forms they should maybe not go to see this out of all movies... This film makes me glad about the time and place I live in, but some of the comments both in the theatre and on this community remind me that THIS struggle isn't yet over. Can I just add to my ancient review that this movie turmed me into a fan of Heath Ledger's work, which makes it even harder to watch now.
2
Philadelphia (1993,  PG-13)
Philadelphia
Not only does Tom Hanks give the performance of a lifetime, this is also one of the most touching and most important films of the Nineties.
3
Saving Face (2005,  R)
Saving Face
I think this must be my favourite romantic comedy of all times. Its sweet, funny, quirky, has a cute couple without the "gay" part being a big issue - wonderful film that more people need to see.
4
The Celluloid Closet (1996,  R)
5
Capote (2005,  R)
Capote
Great, intense film. The only minor criticism is that the incredible intensity of the last 30 minutes could have been sustained throughout the whole film by having more of these fantastic scenes with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Clifton Collins Jr. These two, and the ever-amazing Catherine Keener, make this an unforgettable film. Check out the book afterwards, worth the read!
6
Aimee and Jaguar (2000,  Unrated)
Aimee and Jaguar
Great, great film. Touching, historically mostly accurate and great acting.
7
Kinsey (2004,  R)
Kinsey
Great film, though it lacks the wonderful ironic distance of T.C. Boyle's pseudobiographical book on Kinsey, "The Inner Circle". Check that one out if you liked the film.
The actors are fantastic, the film never bores and is highly provocative in its execution.
8
The Color Purple (1985,  PG-13)
The Color Purple
Spielberg has done so many bad films recently that one tends to forget why he is deemed such a good director universally. Well, here's why. And here is also why Whoopi Goldberg is a brilliant actress and yet so terribly underrated. Great, important film.
9
Heavenly Creatures (1994,  R)
Heavenly Creatures
Peter Jackson is officially a god of direction. From Braindead to this to Lord of the Rings. And the girls are fantastic
10
Bound (1996,  R)
Bound
This movie had to grow on me. But when it did, it hit me as a clever, thrilling, provocative, slightly ironic and subtlely erotic film - the Wachowski brothers almost never fail to deliver. Additionally, Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon make for one of the best gay couples of motion picture history and kick this movie from being good to very very good.
11
Guys and Balls (Maenner Wie Wir) (2006,  R)
Guys and Balls (Maenner Wie Wir)
Harmless yet incredibly fun German comedy about a gay soccer team. Great for a fun dvd night with friends, and a cute romance is at the center, of course.
12
Summer Storm (Sommersturm) (2006,  R)
Summer Storm (Sommersturm)
Wonderful coming-of-age film.
13
Madame Satã (2002,  Unrated)
Madame Satã
Edgy, psychologically clever film, great actors. I like the choice of period (before he became famous, in 30's Rio), Lazaro Ramos is superb. Very intense and recommendable film.
14
Gia (1997,  R)
Gia
It was done for TV, unfortunately that does show a little in the lacklustre direction. But Angelina Jolie is superb. Sexy, dramatic, sad movie.
15
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005,  R)
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Such good entertainment, hilariously funny.
16
Goldfish Memory (2003,  G)
Goldfish Memory
Wonderful little Irish film. What makes it more than your average romantic comedy is the cast and the quirky humour. It's something for every audience: there's gay, lesbian and straight couples, so everybody should check it out... ;-)
17
Show Me Love (Fucking Amal) (1999,  Unrated)
Show Me Love (Fucking Amal)
So cute.
18
Tipping the Velvet (2002,  R)
Tipping the Velvet
Entertaining period drama, yet far behind the brilliant novel.
I heard they are making a remake with Beyonce Knowles and Eva Longoria (by Sofia Coppola) - I am doubtful, though excited about the, uhm, talented cast. Call me big old macho if you like... ;-)
19
When Night Is Falling (1995,  R)
When Night Is Falling
It is good, entertaining and even sexy. But there isn't much content beyond the unequal romance. However, it's always refreshing to see a likeable, non-psychotic lesbian couple on film. And the actresses have excellent chemistry.
20
Kissing Jessica Stein (2002,  R)
Kissing Jessica Stein
Jessica is very, very annoying, but the film is good fun anyway.
21
Better Than Chocolate (1999,  Unrated)
Better Than Chocolate
Cute and entertaining.
22
Imagine Me & You (2006,  R)
Imagine Me & You
Cute, fluffy fun. Can't give it a better rating since it is just a romantic comedy with the usual components, but it's entertaining and sweet at that. Lena Headey and Piper Perabo make for an extremely cute couple. I also like tha fact that all the characters are likeable, so it doesn't turn into huge drama and stays light.
23
The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love (1995,  R)
The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love
Another one of these cute teenager coming out-films. Take your popcorn and watch it with friends. Or give it to your teenaged cousin who has a hard time coming out in her small town... ;-)
24
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994,  R)
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
I love it. Really. Every minute of it.
25
But I'm A Cheerleader (2000,  R)
But I'm A Cheerleader
Campy, cheesy, funny.
26
Orlando (1992,  PG-13)
Orlando
Fantastic. I only saw it once ages ago and yet almost every scene seems be imprinted firmly into my mind.
27
Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother) (1999,  R)
28
Boys Don't Cry (1999,  R)
Boys Don't Cry
Great performances. Great movie.
29
If These Walls Could Talk 2 (2000,  R)
If These Walls Could Talk 2
The first episode is so sad, Vanessa Redgrave's acting is stunning. The other two are entertaining, but lack depth, unlike the first film (in which all 3 parts were excellent). Still a nice, cute film.
30
Lost and Delirious (2001,  R)
Lost and Delirious
Unfortunately the drama is a little over-the-top especially towards the end, otherwise a good film. I had some bad boarding-school-flashbacks, actually... ;-)
31
D.E.B.S. (2004,  PG-13)
D.E.B.S.
Great, great fun.
32
Frida (2002,  R)
Frida
The film as such has lengths, but Salma's performance is so good that it really gets the rating up.
33
Transamerica (2005,  R)
Transamerica
What a very perfect movie with an utterly perfect lead performance by Felicity Huffmann. I actually find nothing to criticize in this calm yet exciting road movie with a sympathetic, intelligent, funny and well-adjusted lead character. Huffmann's performance made me forget even the slightest hint of Housewives-fame within 5 minutes - that is an Oscar-deserving actress if I ever saw one. Shame on the Academy for not rewarding this important, clever, sensitive and touching film.
34
Eating Out (2004,  Unrated)
Eating Out
Normally this would be 3 stars probably, but I just add one for the sheer fun of it. Very very silly. Very very funny. Very very sexy. Why do gay guys get the fun films and we get the depressed, murderous dykes? ;-) Well, this is faulty, low budget (which shows) but so deliciously entertaining.
35
Threesome (1994,  R)
Threesome
Great, underrated and hugely entertaining.
36
Loving Annabelle (2006,  Unrated)
Loving Annabelle
Acted and directed in a surprisingly subtle fashion, the whole student-teacher-story is given an original, appealing new twist. The actresses have amazing chemistry - this film was a huge hit at festivals for a good reason.
37
Breakfast on Pluto (2005,  R)
Breakfast on Pluto
It's a tough journey to watch this, but a rewarding one, great portrait, wonderful acting by the eeringly naturally feminine Cillian Murphy (I could actually be jealous of his features, that man is beautiful!), an unusual yet moving and entertaining film. I felt deeply connected to Kitten, she is so vulnerable and lovable.
38
The Chinese Botanist's Daughters (Les Filles du botaniste) (2006,  Unrated)
The Chinese Botanist's Daughters (Les Filles du botaniste)
Visually simply amazing and wonderfully subtle, the tension between the two women is sensual, palpable, poetic even. This film could be watched without any sound at all and be understood just through its visuals. The longing looks, the lingering of the camera on the skin, the amazing scenery... Very powerful film.
39
Puccini for Beginners (,  Unrated)
Puccini for Beginners
Hilarious, quirky and edgy. Actually one of the first romantic comedies in which the characters seemed somewhat similar to people I know - the sexually confused, the heteroflexible, the lesbian ex's, the commitment-phobic, the clingy girlfriends... I felt thorougly entertained and hence choose to ignore any faults this movie might have (the prevalent one being Gretchen Mol, who is not the best actress...).
40
Gray Matters (2007,  PG-13)
Gray Matters
A bit bland, a bit uninspired, but also somewhat charming and certainly entertaining. Heather Graham saves the day with her funny, charming and delightful performance. Molly Shannon is pure hilarity.
41
Nina's Heavenly Delights (2007,  PG-13)
Nina's Heavenly Delights
Very fun, very cute lesbian romance with a hint of Bollywood and lots of Scottish charme. The German audience at the Gay & Lesbian film festival was very, very thankful about the subtitles - Glasgow accent is always a challenge.
42
The Gymnast (2006,  Unrated)
The Gymnast
Graceful, beautiful and quiet would be the first things to come to mind to say about this. But then unfortunately it is also ever so slightly shallow in its characterizations, lacks chemistry between the leads and relies too much on the amazing aerial acts. I was drawn in nevertheless, so it gets a good 3 stars - but I might be giving the benefit of the doubt here. I will rewatch it on DVD to form a final opinion on it, as my expectations of this were probably too high.
43
Ci qing (Mandala) (Spider Lilies) (2006,  Unrated)
Ci qing (Mandala) (Spider Lilies)
Visually beautiful, almost lyrical film, very touching and originally told love story. Very well received by the audience at the Gay & Lesbian film festival here in Hamburg.
44
It's In The Water (1998,  Unrated)
It's In The Water
Ok, so this movie is badly and cheaply done, suffers from virtually every cliché you could imagine (refreshing: the straight characters are the clichéd ones while the gays are lovely, well-rounded characters) - but it is SOOOOO funny. And the fun I had while watching it adds the third star, which it technically probably wouldn't deserve. Straight people won't get half of the in-jokes, though! ;-)
45
Out at the Wedding (2007,  Unrated)
Out at the Wedding
So the acting isn't always spot on, the story is over the top - BUT THE FUN! This film sent me info fits of hysterical laughter, it is charming, funny and extremely entertaining. Technically it might not be the best feature ever made, but the sheer fun of it even made me add an extra half star. Great, indie entertainment, just the right thing for a date movie or a nice night in with your loved one. My recommendation: combine it with It's in the Water and you'll have a great, fun, queer movie night. :-)
46
I Can't Think Straight (2008,  PG-13)
I Can't Think Straight
Funny, heartwarming and downright sexy. Yes, technically this would probably not entirely deserve 5 stars (the dialogue seemed a bit forced at times, the low budget shone through very occasionally), but I had so much fun, I loved the chemistry between the actresses and this was more than just a romantic comedy. The humour is clever, the romance believable and the characters are lovable and well-rounded. And, to come to my most valid argument: This is hands down the lesbian romantic comedy with the hottest couple. A brief moment where Nala stands on top of a staircase in heels and looks at Leyla prompted spontaneous gasps from the almost exclusively female audience. You will know which moment I mean... Hot, funny, endearing film.

The World Unseen (2008,  PG-13)
The World Unseen
Beautiful directorial debut with great (and stunning!) lead actresses. Unfortunately too concerned with conveying as much of the book as possible, the transition from the great novel to the screen wasn't entirely successful in terms of storytelling. The cinematography and cast is very good, and for a first film this is extremely well done. Overall a heartfelt narrative set in Apartheid South Africa, centered around a tender lesbian romance, but also filled with interesting glimpses into Apartheid realities. I just discovered that "I can't think straight" was actually shot before this, so ignore the part about the debut... Two very good films in a row, kudos to Shamim Sarif.
48
Milk (2008,  R)
Milk
Inspiring, engaging, political movie. A superb cast led by Sean Penn in the role of a lifetime (even for his high standards) and great direction by Gus van Sant brings events to life that do not cease to be relevant in this day and age. So many of the things in the film are too close to modern political reality to not have an impact on the audience. Apart from telling the life story of a brave, passionate man, this also is as political as a film can get, calling to action every gay and straight person in the world. Unpolitical and closeted LGBT people should watch this to be inspired to come out and fight. And all those bigots might yet learn a thing or two about human rights and democracy. I keep my fingers crossed for Oscar night, but I do fear that the conservative Academy might not reward this film as it should be.
49
Hannah Free (2009,  Unrated)
Hannah Free
Quiet but never depressing movie about love, life, death and saying goodbye - with a marvelous cast, especially the amazing Sharon Gless. Great film.
50
El Nino Pez (The Fish Child) (2009,  Unrated)
El Nino Pez (The Fish Child)
Since I saw this at a film festival, in between two truly great films, I might have been just too tired and overwhelmed to appreciate this fully. I found the movie to be too disjointed and confusing at times, will rewatch too offer a more detailed critique.
51
Ha-Sodot (The Secrets) (2007,  R)
Ha-Sodot (The Secrets)
Touching, multi-faceted film with fantastic performances by amazingly impressive (and beautiful) actresses. Sometimes too many issues are cramped into one film, and occassionaly the melodrama is a bit over the top, but overall a great film.
52
Drool (2009,  Unrated)
Drool
Campy, quirky film with lots of sinister black humour, great entertainment and guarantee for a very fun movie night.
