Brokeback Mountain (2005, R)
This is fantastic. Ang Lee's quiet, intense direction, two wonderful and subtle actors, a great script - why on earth this film did not win the Oscar is beyond my comprehension. |

Capote (2005, R)
Great, intense film. The only minor criticism is that the incredible intensity of the last 30 minutes could have been sustained throughout the whole film by having more of these fantastic scenes with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Clifton Collins Jr. These two, and the ever-amazing Catherine Keener, make this an unforgettable film. Check out the book afterwards, worth the read! |

Bound (1996, R)
This movie had to grow on me. But when it did, it hit me as a clever, thrilling, provocative, slightly ironic and subtlely erotic film - the Wachowski brothers almost never fail to deliver. Additionally, Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon make for one of the best gay couples of motion picture history and kick this movie from being good to very very good. |

Imagine Me & You (2006, R)
Cute, fluffy fun. Can't give it a better rating since it is just a romantic comedy with the usual components, but it's entertaining and sweet at that. Lena Headey and Piper Perabo make for an extremely cute couple. I also like tha fact that all the characters are likeable, so it doesn't turn into huge drama and stays light. |

Transamerica (2005, R)
What a very perfect movie with an utterly perfect lead performance by Felicity Huffmann. I actually find nothing to criticize in this calm yet exciting road movie with a sympathetic, intelligent, funny and well-adjusted lead character. Huffmann's performance made me forget even the slightest hint of Housewives-fame within 5 minutes - that is an Oscar-deserving actress if I ever saw one. Shame on the Academy for not rewarding this important, clever, sensitive and touching film. |

Breakfast on Pluto (2005, R)
It's a tough journey to watch this, but a rewarding one, great portrait, wonderful acting by the eeringly naturally feminine Cillian Murphy (I could actually be jealous of his features, that man is beautiful!), an unusual yet moving and entertaining film. I felt deeply connected to Kitten, she is so vulnerable and lovable. |

The Chinese Botanist's Daughters (Les Filles du botaniste) (2006, Unrated)
Visually simply amazing and wonderfully subtle, the tension between the two women is sensual, palpable, poetic even. This film could be watched without any sound at all and be understood just through its visuals. The longing looks, the lingering of the camera on the skin, the amazing scenery... Very powerful film. |

Puccini for Beginners (, Unrated)
Hilarious, quirky and edgy. Actually one of the first romantic comedies in which the characters seemed somewhat similar to people I know - the sexually confused, the heteroflexible, the lesbian ex's, the commitment-phobic, the clingy girlfriends... I felt thorougly entertained and hence choose to ignore any faults this movie might have (the prevalent one being Gretchen Mol, who is not the best actress...). |

The Gymnast (2006, Unrated)
Graceful, beautiful and quiet would be the first things to come to mind to say about this. But then unfortunately it is also ever so slightly shallow in its characterizations, lacks chemistry between the leads and relies too much on the amazing aerial acts. I was drawn in nevertheless, so it gets a good 3 stars - but I might be giving the benefit of the doubt here. I will rewatch it on DVD to form a final opinion on it, as my expectations of this were probably too high. |

It's In The Water (1998, Unrated)
Ok, so this movie is badly and cheaply done, suffers from virtually every cliché you could imagine (refreshing: the straight characters are the clichéd ones while the gays are lovely, well-rounded characters) - but it is SOOOOO funny. And the fun I had while watching it adds the third star, which it technically probably wouldn't deserve. Straight people won't get half of the in-jokes, though! ;-) |

Out at the Wedding (2007, Unrated)
So the acting isn't always spot on, the story is over the top - BUT THE FUN! This film sent me info fits of hysterical laughter, it is charming, funny and extremely entertaining. Technically it might not be the best feature ever made, but the sheer fun of it even made me add an extra half star. Great, indie entertainment, just the right thing for a date movie or a nice night in with your loved one. My recommendation: combine it with It's in the Water and you'll have a great, fun, queer movie night. :-) |

I Can't Think Straight (2008, PG-13)
Funny, heartwarming and downright sexy. Yes, technically this would probably not entirely deserve 5 stars (the dialogue seemed a bit forced at times, the low budget shone through very occasionally), but I had so much fun, I loved the chemistry between the actresses and this was more than just a romantic comedy. The humour is clever, the romance believable and the characters are lovable and well-rounded. And, to come to my most valid argument: This is hands down the lesbian romantic comedy with the hottest couple. A brief moment where Nala stands on top of a staircase in heels and looks at Leyla prompted spontaneous gasps from the almost exclusively female audience. You will know which moment I mean... Hot, funny, endearing film. |

The World Unseen (2008, PG-13)
Beautiful directorial debut with great (and stunning!) lead actresses. Unfortunately too concerned with conveying as much of the book as possible, the transition from the great novel to the screen wasn't entirely successful in terms of storytelling. The cinematography and cast is very good, and for a first film this is extremely well done. Overall a heartfelt narrative set in Apartheid South Africa, centered around a tender lesbian romance, but also filled with interesting glimpses into Apartheid realities. I just discovered that "I can't think straight" was actually shot before this, so ignore the part about the debut... Two very good films in a row, kudos to Shamim Sarif. |

Milk (2008, R)
Inspiring, engaging, political movie. A superb cast led by Sean Penn in the role of a lifetime (even for his high standards) and great direction by Gus van Sant brings events to life that do not cease to be relevant in this day and age. So many of the things in the film are too close to modern political reality to not have an impact on the audience. Apart from telling the life story of a brave, passionate man, this also is as political as a film can get, calling to action every gay and straight person in the world. Unpolitical and closeted LGBT people should watch this to be inspired to come out and fight. And all those bigots might yet learn a thing or two about human rights and democracy. I keep my fingers crossed for Oscar night, but I do fear that the conservative Academy might not reward this film as it should be. |
