Superman (1978,  PG)
Superman 5.0 Stars
A classic superhero movie, one of the best, if not the best. Although some people are critical of the cheese within the movie, I believe it is an integral part of its charm. The cast and directing are brilliant. The background given to Superman as Clark Kent really shows how Superman became the man who stands for "truth, justice and the American way". The, then, unknown Christopher Reeve will be unsurpassed as Superman. Brandon Routh does a good job, but Christopher Reeve will always be Superman. Although his different portrayals of Clark kent and superman draws criticism, I believe it is required to differentiate between them, which is highlighted by the different reactions Lois has to them both. His chemistry with Margot Kidder is undeniable, which provides a strong backbone to the movie. Gene Hackman is a brilliant Lex Luthor, showing wit and genius combined with his intrinsic evil. Marlon Brando unfortunately only had a small part as the doomed Jor-El, but he plays his role excellently. Again, there is a God-like aura about Jor-El, as he sends "his only son" to earth because we only "lack the light to show the way". There seems to be an underlying religious theme within the Superman movies, which strongly and rightly portrays Superman as a saviour. This is the best superhero movie thus far. I don't believe it will be surpassed.

Spider-Man (2002,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 4.5 Stars
An excellent superhero movie. It beautifully depicts the acquisition of his powers and the way these powers shaped his destiny, via a harsh lesson which cost him dearly. We see how his life changes and how it affects his personal life. We see him becoming selfless, sacrificing what he desires for the greater good. Tobey Maguire portrays Peter Parker brilliantly. He plays a believable geeky loser. Kirsten Dunst is adequate as Mary-Jane Watson. Willem DeFoe is a sinister villain. He portrays the Green Goblin and Norman Osborn to perfection, never giving a clue to his alter-ego. Sam Raimi's film is excellently shot, even Spiderman's swinging is graceful which is a nice touch. The action scenes are excellent and the plot moves along smoothly giving you the full story at a nice pace. A truly remarkable movie!!

Spider-Man 3 (2007,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 3 4.5 Stars
Initially, I was skeptical. Would the character depth of the villains be diluted due to the sheer number of them plus Spider-man's own alteration?? The answer is no. Despite bad reviews, the main point of a movie is to entertain and it does. It also leaves you with some appreciation.
Tobey Maguire is very good. His alteration, though not as evil as I thought it should have been, was still a joy due to the humour, which is more prevalent in this installment than the previous two films. The humour is superb, but you also see the way his popularity has changed his persona. He's more confident, if a little cocky. Kirsten Dunst was hardly featured comparatively. She portrayed a rather disgruntled Mary Jane well. Her chemistry with Tobey Maguire is never in doubt. James Franco is rather good as both sides of his polar persona. He's especially brilliant as the scheming "Goblin" persona, taking the role with relish. Topher Grace and Thomas Haden Church were good villains, perhaps not the best, but still good. Their backstories are well explained, although, the Sandman's is rather simple. It is a testament to Sam Raimi that he managed to set up Venom/Eddie Brock's backstory whilst still using Sandman or dark Spiderman as the primary antagonist. It was a very efficient process. You also get a glimpse of the humanity of each of the villains, though in different ways. Sandman is not intrinsically bad, in fact, he's more of a good man who's failed to be good. Eddie Brock shows real evil, which in itself, was only magnified by Venom, showing the potential humanity has. Gwen Stacy added a new dimension, but it wasn't fully explored. She could've been used more to further enhance the inner conflict and the dark side of Peter Parker. Nonetheless, her presence was not bad, rather the potential was never fulfilled.
The action is spectacular The special effects are first class. The fight scenes, spanning the streets and skyscrapers to an enclosed room were brilliant. Breathtaking. Spiderman is as elegant as ever!!! The effects are excellent. The crane scene really typifies that.
Special mention must go to Stan Lee's cameo. He has lines!! They were quite inspiring words too!
Possibly the best of the three. Critics like to explore flaws and expand them. They delve too deeply, too intellectually. Films are here for entertainment and to some degree inspiration. This film is highly entertaining. True there are flaws, but if you dwell, you lose the enjoyment of the movie.
A humourous, action packed film, with some character development to boot. A great film. If you love Spiderman or any action flick, you'll love this. Best film of the year thus far?? Quite possibly.

Superman II (1981,  PG)
Superman II 4.5 Stars
I like it. Not as good as the original, but the original would have been very hard to live up to. I think it would have been as good as the original had the Donner version been completed. Richard Lester is a poor director (Superman III is nowhere near as good as the first two). Without the screen presence of the charismatic Brando, this film could have been poor, but Reeve and Stamp put in great performances. Stamp is the epitome of evil, continually betraying all who help him after their usefulness has expired. Reeve has made Superman his own; he is marvellous. There is also a development of the Lois-Clark relationship, which is well done. The only thing of note that Lester contributed to the film was the Metropolis battle between Superman and the three Kryptonians. The effects were good for the time and it is a very likeable film.

Supergirl (1984,  PG)
Supergirl 4.0 Stars
Although this got slated by critics, I liked it. It's such a good film. Helen Slater plays Supergirl/ Linda Lee with the innocence you would expect from an adolescent stranded on a unfamiliar world. Faye Dunaway is a great villainess/ witch who tries to access the power granted by the mysterious Kryptonian device. Supergirl's love interest is a bit lame. He seemed a bit of an idiot really. I liked the film. It's a film for the younger people, I loved it as a child.
