The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
"Why so serious?"

Like most of the swarm that ran to see this at the cinema, I have to admit it was probably mainly to do with Heath Ledgers tragic death. But wow, what an incredible film. This is quite easily the best super hero film that's been made, and it's difficult to see anything ever being better.
Although The Dark Knight is meant to be the sequel to Batman Begins, this film quite easily works on it's own. I hadn't even realised this was a sequel until I watched Batman Begins (after seeing The Dark Knight).
From the very beginning, this film is filled with suspense, thrills and action. The Jokers insane plans keep you on your toes for the entire film and your left impatiently waiting for him to come back on screen. Heath Ledger is outstanding as the joker. Jack Nicholson played the part well, but Ledger is just on a whole different level. Aswell as being manic and hilarious, he also portrays a very sinister side that makes him very believable, plus- I don't think I've loved the bad guy so much. The rest of the cast also play their parts well and Christian Bale remains the best Batman so far. There are some times that drag on a little, but the anticipation for the next action scene keeps you interested.
This really is an electrifying film. Top actors, top story line and top action. Even if you dislike action films, don't like super heroes or hold a personal vendetta against Batman, you should still see this plainly for Heath Ledgers performance, because it really is outstanding, and so different to any other character he has played.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
One of the most chilling films I've seen, Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster both play their parts very well. It's quite hard to watch if you're not paying complete attention, as I found it quite hard to understand the first time I watched it. I also loved one of the last lines, "I'm having an old friend for dinner". Such a creepy character.
3
Psycho (1960,  R)
Psycho
It's nearly 50 years old and people still choose to watch it which says it all really, it's not gonna scare the life out of you, but Norman Bates is quite a creepy and disturbing character, and the film is great at building suspense.
4
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980,  PG)
5
Misery (1990,  R)
Misery
Wow, this was actually quite creepy! Bates is brilliant as Annie Wilkes, I don't know if she won an award for her performance, but she definitely deserved to if she didn't . I was also impressed by James Caan, I've seen quite a few of his films recently and he's consistently good. But Kathy Bates really does steal the show, she helped make this such a tense and thrilling film. I'd definitely reccomend this film to anyone.

A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
This isn't a bad film. While watching it you find yourself thinking WHAT THE HELL? but at the end you realise how brilliant the whole plot of the story is.

There is a lot of sickening violence, not because of blood or gore, but the way it is carried out with such delight. Malcolm Mcdowell plays the part brilliantly and although the character he is playing is evil, you can't help but feel empathy for him at the end which just shows how important free will is.

This film will leave you breathless and confused will the endless amount of possible questions and powerful message. The film is very well made and portrays the character of Alex really well, but I would do the opposite to what I did and read the book first, it's a lot better.
7
Aliens (1986,  R)
Aliens
"Get away from her you bitch!"

Surely this is the best sci fi ever made, or at least in the top 5. The other Alien films are great but this is just incredible. The same sort of idea and story line as the first - some muppet wants to put one of the deadliest monsters in a cage and stick needles in it, whilst the others are running for their lives. The action is fast and electrifying, and there are some moments that are so full of suspense that you're practically falling off the edge of your seat. The special effects are brilliant, there are some cases where CGI is rightly not used and this is one of them, the alien really is quite terrifying.
Sigourney Weaver puts in a great performance, and this film gives her the right to claim to be the best action heroine around. She fights off a dozen aliens wielding a huge gun, whilst also remembering to do her duty as a protective mother.
This truly is a magnificent action sci fi, the fear, tension and suspense are all created very well and the few humorous quotes throughout are entertaining and enjoyable. I can't really think of a thing I would change about this film.

The Terminator (1984,  R)
The Terminator
"You still don't get it, do you? He'll find her. That's what he does. That's all he does! You can't stop him. He'll wade through you, reach down her throat, and pull her fucking heart out!"

By far one of my favourite action films of all time. This is an absolute classic. The film that made Schwarzenegger the action icon he is today.

The plot and idea is original and at the same time pretty damn scary and it's executed brilliantly. The pace of the film is perfect and there are some great action scenes. The soundtrack also deserves a mention because at times it really does make the moment so much more tense and full of suspense.

I'm sure only Arnie could play the role of the terminator, his emotionless and deadpan portrayal is pretty good at creating fear and also some humour. Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn also both give very real and convincing performances. Some of the special effects are a bit dated now, particularly the robot at the end, but that doesn't stop this being an all time classic. An absolutely awesome film.

Single White Female (1992,  R)
Single White Female
"Allison Jones: I know you weren't yourself when you did this, Hedy.
Hedra Carlson: I know, I was YOU"

What a fantastic thriller. And great performances from Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Leigh's character is about as disturbing and twisted as they come, and she couldn't have played it better. She certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat and it's never really clear what her motives are and what she wants.
The beginning of the film is fairly dull, and is full of irrelevant dialogue and sex scenes, but it suddenly takes a turn and the last half hour(ish) is incredibly tense and full of suspense. Despite being released in the early nineties it doesn't have that sometimes annoying cheesy feel to it and is very entertaining at times. A thriller that is well worth watching.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007,  R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
"No, theres no place like London"

I'm not normally a fan of musicals, but this is yet another Tim Burton film that I love.
A story of love, revenge and a psycho barber set in dreary Victorian London.

The setting was perfect for Burton, it felt like this was a film where he could go as dark and sinister as he liked and it would still work. There is some bits of humour and the light hearted songs bring out the best of the dark and strange humour humour that we so often see in Burton's work.

Considering none of the cast full of stars are not professional singers I think they did a really good job. Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and James Campbell Bower have few moments where they have to sing, but they pull it off. I think if Rickman and Spall were to sing more then I would have a problem with it though. Ed Sanders also does pretty well and he seems to have a lot of potential as an actor. His characters relationship with Mrs Lovett was very believable.
Johnny Depp was brilliant as usual, I guess we should all expect top performances from him now, but he really made the role of Sweeney Todd his own and became one of those villains that you can't help but love, and the story of Benjamin Barker is pretty heart breaking to be honest.
As for Helena Bonham Carter, I don't know. I love her as an actress and her acting was good, her love for Sweeney Todd was obvious and as I said before her relationship with the character Toby is very convinving, but she'll have her critics over her voice because at times it seemed quite flat.
However, I think that may be a reason I enjoy this film so much, I can't stand it when some person randomly bursts into some opera style singing, so it was refreshing to see just ordinary people singing, with the cockney accent to go with it.

I absolutely love this film. The music, characters and blood and gore are all brilliant and I always like the dark style of Burton's films. And I think it's now been proved that Tim Burton + Johnny Depp = great film.

The Shining (1980,  R)
The Shining
well, I didn't know whether to be scared or to just laugh. It is a great film, Jack Nicholson was so funny, the woman actor on the other hand was terrible, which only adds to the humour really. The only part that really creeped me out was the two little girls. Although it isn't that scary it's still a film that I can always enjoy.
12
Saw II (2005,  R)
Saw II
In some ways I think this is better than the first one. It has just as much tension and suspense than the first, and the twist at the end is just as big. However, this time there are more lives at stake, more seems to be going on and it's a lot more gory.
13
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003,  R)
14
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984,  R)
A Nightmare on Elm Street
A classic horror film that is still pretty scary. The idea alone is quite creepy and Freddy Krueger is played so well. A must see for all horror fans
15
Goldfinger (1964,  PG)
Goldfinger
Known as one of the best Bond films so far and rightly so. Goldfinger and Oddjob are both brilliant evil villains. Typical action and stunts and two memorable scenes; the girl lying on the bed and the tense laser beam scene, this really is the best of Bond.

Bond: Do you expect me to talk?
Goldfinger: No Mr Bond, I expect you to die!
16
The Matrix Reloaded (2003,  R)
The Matrix Reloaded
Just as brilliant as the first in my opinion. A good plot and story thatdoesn't get any easier to understand, so if that puts you off watch this purely for the amazing effects and action. This is a much faster paced film than the first, down to the fact that it gets straight into the action from the very beginning. Although the matrix had quite a serious mood to it, this has more of a fun atmosphere mainly created by the brilliant Mr Smith.
17
No Country for Old Men (2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
Except maybe Castaway, i don't think i've ever watched such a quiet film! Normally the soundtrack is used (effectively) to build tension, but the fact that so many moments were just silent just made this edge of the seat thriller even more tense. Each actor plays their part well, especially Javier Bardem who perfectcly plays the ruthless and sinister hunter. This film just blew me away.
18
Batman Forever (1995,  PG-13)
Batman Forever
jim carrey and tommy lee jones were hilarious. It was incredibly cheesy, but quite an entertaining film that I wouldn't mind watching again.
19
Gangs of New York (2002,  R)
Gangs of New York
An awesome film with some shocking scenes. The characters were brilliant and made the film very believable. Definitely worth watching
20
Scream (1996,  R)
Scream
Anyone who likes horror's should see this. Quite a gory, suspensefilled horror that pretty much explains how a horror works. I didn't find it that scary but it's still entertaining
21
The Ring (2002,  PG-13)
The Ring
When I first saw this it scared the life out of me. While your watching this turn your phone off. A film that I will probably always remember.
