Fantasy films are films with fantastic themes, usually involving magic, supernatural events, make-believe creatures, or exotic fantasy worlds. The genre is considered to be distinct from science fiction film and horror film, although the genres do overlap.
"Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo? It'll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they'll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields... and eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?"
Director: Peter Jackson Starring: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin Running time: 201 minutes Country: New Zealand, USA
This is definitely one of the best films ever made. It is a film that sets different standards within pretty much all the genres there is because of its really clever story and very powerful script. Also because of the way it was filmed and what the characters were like. It doesnt so much help but it teaches other filmmakers that Lord Of The Rings has changed the world of cinema forever. What I really truly love about Lord Of The Rings is that they are obviously mythical stories but they are stories that are really believable and people can really imagine as being really realistic. It is a franchise of novels that I was probably thinking would turn out to be like the way the Batman films were. When I saw them, they are like a joint rival of greatest franchise of all time next to Star Wars (original trilogy) and The Godfather trilogy. Lord Of The Rings is the most powerful franchise that has ever been made which is why I have to say that Lord Of The Rings is the greatest franchise of all time. When I went to the cinema to see this film when I was 12 years old, I was shocked by how long it was on for and I thought to myself "How can a film by such a long running time not become a boring film but become a total masterpiece of work?" But when I did see it, I thought that Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King is the best of all three and is a real new cinematic experience that invents and creates new types of movies within the genres fantasy, action, suspense and even drama. Return Of The King is the most inspiring one of them all because it is a very emotional film with a lot of drastic twists and turns that occur with the characters and the events. Also, it is an inspiration because this is the one film from the trilogy that everyone has been waiting for because it is the one that determines the fate of the Ring, of Middle-Earth, of Frodo and Sam and also for the lost King of Gondor which is Aragorn. It all balances together even though it does take you into a different story with the different characters which is what The Two Towers does. Fellowship Of The Ring doesnt because they are all together. Like in Return Of The King, there are scenes involving Frodo, Sam and Gollum, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and King Theoden and also Gandalf, Merry and Pippin too. I know that this film is a sequel to The Two Towers just like that is to Fellowship Of The Ring but it never seems to loose its story nor its lust for the audiences attention. When I saw the end of Return Of The King, it is a feeling that I get that I want more of Lord Of The Rings but obviously cant because there are only three novels. Return Of The King is like Empire Strikes Back as far as classic trilogies are concerned especially comparing with Star Wars, Fellowship Of The Ring is like A New Hope and The Two Towers is like Return Of The Jedi. To me, The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King is the greatest fantasy film of all time and is the greatest final film to a franchise ever made.
I thought the acting was really good from almost the whole cast in this one. Elijah Woods performance is a lot better in this one. Elijah truly shows his excellent talent at showing Frodos pain with the Ring but he doesnt show 100% that Frodo is a hero. He still does make Frodo a hero of course but not as much as I was hoping he would. I noticed that he cried a lot in this film where there are some scenes where he didnt really need to. Particularly the scene where he makes Sam go back to Hobbiton when they are half way up the Winding Stairs. When he said "Go home" to Sam. I noticed that was familiar with Elijah because when I saw the extended version of the film where there was a disc with interviews, making the film etc and they were doing try-outs of how Elijah can say those words. It would be either shouting at him or just ordering him but in a calm and more relaxed way. He sort of acts how Mark Hamill acts in the Star Wars trilogy. Ian McKellen never seems to disappoint me in any of the films he has been in. His performance as Gandalf is perfect once again just like in the previous two films. McKellen IS Gandalf and it is simple as that. He makes Gandalf like a really hard and really classic supporting character to other characters like Frodo in Fellowship Of The Ring, King Theoden in The Two Towers and Pippin in Return Of The King. Ian McKellen is definitely the best out of the whole trilogy. I cant wait to see him return as Gandalf in the two Hobbit films coming up. Viggo Mortsensen returns more heroic than ever in Return Of The King than the previous two films. Aragorn shows his true colours in this film by becoming King Elessar more than Aragorn. He is no random Ranger anymore. He is an heir to throne of Gondor of all places. He is a hero that everybody loves in the film because to me it is like revenge for Aragorn aswell as saving Middle-Earth because he is losing his love and he lost pretty much all his kin along time before. Sean Astins performance was very heartbreaking and was very emotional. It was a performance that I think was pretty much the same type of acting that was used in Fellowship Of The Ring and The Two Towers. I think this is one of the few films that have a very powerful supporting cast. Sam was a rather weeping character in this one compared to the previous films. It was a really good thing in that case because Sam was a very heroic character and a mentor to Frodo. Andy Serkis particularly in this one reveals one of the best film villains of all time that is Gollum. It is puzzling for me as I am sure it is for everyone who has watched the three Lord Of The Rings films whether Gollum was against Frodo and Sam all along because there was a loving Gollum in The Two Towers and when Frodo so-called betrayed Gollum he decided to kill them. And also in The Two Towers when Gollum was telling Frodo and Sam about the second way into Mordor when the stairs and tunnel. I think he knew that it was the lair of the giant spider that is Shelob. I think he was against them all along but just needed their trust for him to do what he wanted. He only wanted the Ring.
Peter Jacksons direction of the film creates a brand new standard of modern filmmaking. His directed angles were very far out and were very accurate particularly with the zooming out on Minas Tirith. I think Peter tries to show us the sceneries and make us feel the reality of the story. If Peter Jackson hadnt directed the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, they wouldnt be masterpieces. Peter Jacksons previous films in the past have been rather poor ones I have been told: Meet The Feebles and Braindead. Fierce Creatures is supposed to be pretty good. Peter Jackson has become a legendary filmmaker after only creating three films. I think he was a legend already after he only did Fellowship Of The Ring. King Kong is a bloody awesome film aswell. Better than the original version. I think of this century, Lord Of The Rings is like the original Star Wars trilogy of last years century. The script is probably the best that I have ever seen from a fantasy film. It is adapted to make it seem a bit like an ordinary drama film even though it is obviously a fantasy story.
This film won all 11 Academy Awards of its 11 nominations. It is a tie along with Ben-Hur and Titanic for most Academy Awards in only one film. It won: Best Sound Mixing, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Make-Up, Best Original Song (Into The West), Best Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director (Peter Jackson) and Best Picture 2003. It became the first and only fantasy film to win Best Picture. It also won all 4 Golden Globe nominations it was nominated for: Best Director (Peter Jackson), Best Original Music Score, Best Original Song and Best Picture Drama.
Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King is in my opinion and maybe most peoples opinion the greatest fantasy film of all time. It is the best of the trilogy. It is the best of 2003. It is my favourite epic film too. Along with Sweeney Todd, The Dark Knight, The Pianist, Pans Labyrinth and Sin City, Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King is one of the best of the 2000 decade. There is a bigger word to describe Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King than masterpiece because it is so amazing!
"My name is Benjamin Button, and I was born under unusual circumstances. While everyone else was agin', I was gettin' younger... all alone."
Director: David Fincher Starring: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Taraji P. Henson, Julia Ormond Running time: 166 minutes Country: USA
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is the single most magical film that I have ever laid my eyes on my whole life. It is a beautiful film that is obviously very odd and weird but it teaches a lot of things about life and about our loved ones. It teaches that we are meant to lose our loved ones that time takes our loved ones away from us. It also tells us about what life can be like from a person who lives life the opposite way and it tells us what death could be like. It is a film that made me cry and that doesn't happen very often to me. It obviously made me cry because of the tragedies and the heartbreak within but also the beauty because I just adored all of the characters. As far as the story of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is concerned, it is one of those plots that you would feel surprised that hasn't been made up before especially after the short story of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button was published in 1921. It is a very clever story as well as odd because of the way the film was made in the more technical way. I thought of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button exactly the same as what I thought of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street last year. After feeling this way to both of those films for two years in a row, I now can feel that there will be at least one film every year that will be a very close favourite of mine and will love from a different director, actor, actress, screenwriter etc. I watched the trailer over and over again just as I did Sweeney Todd and I still do now even though I've seen the film more than once now. To me, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is the best feel-good film of all time because it made me feel brilliant in every single way of the story whether the scenes were heartbreaking or not. To me, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button brings a new way of creating a film in more technical ways because it had pretty much every single quality that a film needs and deserves. The technical qualities of the film literally blew me away. The cinematography was absolute magic! It was really golden and magical in a new visual kind of way that was all in bright colours. The cinematography in this film reminded me a bit of Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth apart from that the cinematography in Pan's Labyrinth was a lot darker. The art direction was absolutely fantastic as well with the realistic designs from the past and exactly the same thing with the costume design. The visual effects were outstanding on Benjamin Button as a young boy-pensioner and that was still Brad Pitt portraying Benjamin. The visual effects there were like Dan without legs even though Gary Sinise does have both of his legs. The best technical design out of the whole film was the make-up because when we see Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett with the make-up on looking old in which they do it makes us think "Could this be what Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett will look like in 30 years time when they're looking older?" I think it was the make-up that made this film seem so real and also created new kinds of make-up design too because when you see Brad Pitt as old Benjamin particularly when really young (in his case) you know it's him but doesn't look like him. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is almost the same as Forrest Gump because of the very similar sorts of characters and the feelings that come out when you watch the film. The stories are totally different and so are Benjamin and Forrest but when you see them around people, they are both similar: timid, nervous, hard to understand but both have a very big heart. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and Forrest Gump are two of my five favourite films and because their characters are similar, they are both funny, beautiful and heartbreaking too.
Brad Pitt as Benjamin Button is a very much deserved Oscar nominated performance. I underestimated Brad Pitt at first especially because it's a Fincher film too and he collaborated with him previously for hard-hitting thrillers Fight Club and Seven but Pitt has delivered his best film performance of his career so far and probably his best for the rest of his career as an actor too. Brad is the only actor who could have made him so real. When we see Benjamin in the war with the captain on the boat who he becomes great friends with is like Forrest with Bubba because they were close too and are understanding towards each other. It was similar to him and Dan as well which didn't really surprise me that much. What I truly loved about Brad Pitt being in this film is that, yes, he's a real heartthrob for a mid-40s man but he shown his true colours and talents as an actor as he did for films like Fight Club, Seven and a few others. As I said, when Benjamin looks old but is really young that could be what Brad Pitt could look like in the future as would Cate Blanchett. When we see Benjamin looking like a teenager but is really a pensioner that might have been what Brad Pitt looked like as a young teenager. Brad Pitt was one of my favourite actors before but he is even more now. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button has brought his career back together again after appearing in films that have been disappointing of this decade. Cate Blanchett's performance as Daisy was absolutely outstanding too. Because of the amazing make-up on her, seeing her young in the scenes with Benjamin and then seeing her on her death bed with her daughter next to her while she's reading Benjamin's diary, it seems a bit like Cate Blanchett is portraying two characters for some reason but I obviously know it is one. Cate Blanchett never has disappointed me and I hope that she never will! Cate is probably the best actress who can make her character realistic in any way possible. Kate Winslet is another actress who can do so. Daisy is a lot like Jenny in Forrest Gump except that she wasn't addicted to drugs and sex like Jenny was but Benjamin Button is very similar to Forrest Gump with finding life really hard and achieving the best thing possible in life too. Cate Blanchett is in my opinion the present Katharine Hepburn who was a legendary actress whom Cate Blanchett portrayed in her Oscar winning performance in The Aviator. She should have been nominated for Best Leading Actress at the 81st Academy Awards. I thought the same with the Golden Globes and BAFTAs. Taraji P. Henson's performance as Queenie who is Benjamin's adopted mother. She is the same kind of person as Mrs. Gump in Forrest Gump because she's supportive, she loves her son and she has that really broad accent. I really liked Julia Ormand as Daisy's daughter Caroline. There is a twist that is both beautiful and heartbreaking that affects her life.
David Fincher has created a one-of-a-kind classic as far as I'm concerned because it is a story of pure beauty, heartbreak and comedy. This is a brand new kind of Fincher film that involves three genres: drama, fantasy and romance. His work on The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button deeply fascinated me just like Tim Burton's did on Sweeney Todd. Fincher's direction of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is like Tim Burton's directing of Big Fish and Robert Zemeckis' directing of Forrest Gump which is where those two films are the most similar to The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. Despite how much I loved (maybe more than loved) this film, I am unsure whether I would want Fincher to direct another film like this because if he creates another that is a romantic-drama and be ruined, it might ruin the great reputation of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. I felt the same thing about Tim Burton as well but he did do Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (which I loved) and Alice In Wonderland (which I cannot wait for!). Some don't think he is the best director to have directed The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button but I personally believe that he is the only director who would have been good enough to do so. The screenwriter of this film is another reason why this film is very similar to Forrest Gump. Eric Roth's script brought the same kind of feeling to The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button as Forrest Gump even though they are totally different stories.
This film was nominated for an astonishing 13 Academy Awards but shockingly only won 3. It made history by becoming the fourth film to have been nominated for Best Picture and have earned the most nominations of an Oscar ceremony but has failed to win Best Picture, Director or Screenplay. Others are Mary Poppins, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? And The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button dominated the Oscars in the technical categories. It won Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects and Best Make-Up. It was nominated for Best Picture but lost to Slumdog Millionaire, Best Leading Actor (Brad Pitt) but lost to Sean Penn in Milk, Best Supporting Actress (Taraji P. Henson) but lost to Penélope Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Best Director (David Fincher) but lost to Danny Boyle in Slumdog Millionaire, Best Adapted Screenplay but lost to Slumdog Millionaire, Best Cinematography but lost to Slumdog Millionaire, Best Costume Design but lost to The Duchess, Best Sound Mixing but lost to Slumdog Millionaire, Best Film Editing but lost to Slumdog Millionaire, Best Music Original Score but lost to Slumdog Millionaire.
It's as simple as this: The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is this decade's Forrest Gump. It is David Fincher's best film and always will be as it will always be my favourite Brad Pitt film too. It is one of Cate Blanchett's best films but I do love her performance in Notes On A Scandal the most. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is one of the most tearjerking films of all time in a heartbreaking way but is the most tearjerking film of all time regarding both beauty and tragedy. The Dark Knight was my favourite film of 2008 but The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is the best film of 2008 now for me. It is one of my extremely close favourite films if not my favourite film and I am glad to say that. It is a very heartfelt film that will always stick in my heart until the day I die! Absolute masterpiece!

Running time: 105 minutes

Aww... Edward Scissorhands is a film that has made me feel pleasure and inspiration within life. It is one of the wierdest Tim Burton films but it is weird enough for it to be real because Edward is like a really beautiful character to watch. It is a weird film with obviously fictional characteristics but with a heartbreaking meaning to the film. It is weird because when you see the cover of the DVD, it doesn't seem that beautiful but when you watch it, it really is. It is Tim Burton's most emotional film so far. It made me feel great because of the pure magic and of what Edward can actually do with himself especially when he lives all alone in a castle above a small town. It is just so magical when Edward is cutting things into shapes especially ice that turns into snow. Love the scene where he is cutting ice in the garden and while he is doing it Kim comes out and sort of relaxes in the snow. That is just like heaven. This film is an inspiration to me because it teaches me no matter what someone looks like it is more about their personality and who they really are. Despite of how romantic and dramatic this film is, this film is absolutely hilarious.
Johnny Depp delivers an absolutely awesome performance as Edward Scissorhands. His performance is a performance which is very unlike Johnny really because Johnny hasnt really portrayed any soft, loving characters before. People love Johnny in this film for many reasons but one of the main ones is because he is only in his late 20s early 30s in this film and is quite good looking. Johnny's hair, costume and make-up totally suited him. As much as I simply adored his performance in this film, I do have to say I like Johnny more as Sweeney Todd. Winona Ryder's performance is good as Kim. Her acting is good when she is sort of bewildered and intimidated by Edward but I dont think it is very good when she starts to fall in love with Edward. Her words were for some reason quite weak but she did cry in a few scenes which looked real. I did like her more in this than Beetlejuice. Dianne Wiest was really good in this film too. She was a really good mother to Edward even though Edward is a grown man. She could have been better but she was still good though.
Tim Burton directs this film ever so well because this is a story that he has thought of himself. It was really well filmed, written and directed by Tim Burton only from his imagination. Its like Tims very own story. I am really inspired that Tim chose to just use his head to make it instead of writing a novel of it and then making a film adaptation afterwards. As I said, it was really well written from a mans head without a novel to help. Also, it is a fantasy story which makes it quite a bit harder. For a film like this, I do honestly think that Burton deserved an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay or should have at least been close. This is typical Tim Burton because of the bizarreness of the story and the characters but it is quite different compared to some others because it is a very emotional and both heartwarming and heartbreaking aswell which is unlike Tim Burton. I think that is one of the reasons Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street and Edward Scissorhands are my two favourite Tim Burton films: because they are both emotional stories.
This is my second favourite Tim Burton film after Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. Four of Tim Burtons films are on my favourite films list. It is my second favourite Johnny Depp film after Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. Edward Scissorhands is only just ahead of the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy. It is on the list for one of my most inspiring films. Edward Scissorhands is one of my favourite fantasy films and romantic films of all time. It is my favourite film of 1990. It is one of my top films of all time too. An unusual masterpiece from an unusual director Tim Burton which is great!! Always have loved this film and always will.
"I've done some things in my life I'm not proud of, but this is the first time I've ever felt in real danger of hell."
Director: Frank Darabont Starring: Tom Hanks, David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, Michael Clarke Duncan Running time: 188 minutes Country: USA
The Green Mile is one of the single most tear-jerking films of all time if not the most. It has a very dark and depressing story which is what I like most. It is a story about God and shows that miracles can and have happened in the past. This is a biblical story about friendship, crime (what man is capable of), love and commitment. Also about what death could be like and what its like to lose your loved ones while you're left behind. A real bastard who I used to know (not anyone on Flixster) recommended it to be and I loved The Green Mile to bits. It was my number two film before I saw Sweeney Todd, Forrest Gump and The Dark Knight. I really love prison films and this has to be my favourite. This film is a very long one but as I watch it more, I tend to find it a bit shorter probably because it is one of my favourite films. I was taken, twisted than blown away again just by watching The Green Mile.
Tom Hanks was amazing in this film as Paul Edgecomb. Paul is the boss of E-Block on the green mile who is suffering from a bladder infection but when he meets John Coffey that changes. Tom has always had a talent of choosing different types of characters and making them powerful and real. Michael Clarke Duncan's performance as John Coffey was one you could just burst into tears by. He is the absolutely perfect actor for John Coffey. There was a lot of tears and pain coming out of John. Despite of what he did, he has some mental problems and is a kind and friendly man. Michael was the best of them all. I really liked David Morse, Jeffrey DeMunn and Barry Pepper as Brutus 'Brutal' Howell, Harry Terwilliger and Dean Stanton. Doug Hutchinson is fantastic as Percy Wetmore. Percy is vile, pathetic a bully and arrogant. He acts like he is the tough guy because his uncle is the governor and he also was probably just raised that way. Percy is one of those character that you would really like to give a good smack around the face. Percy is a perfect example of a bully particularly because he bullies the inmates like Dell and bullies are cowards which Percy is. The reason for this is because when Wild Bill touched him below and kissed his cheek he started whimpering, crying and pissed himself. Sam Rockwell really made me laugh as William 'Wild Bill' Wharton because he was nuts, bad ass and very nasty. Also it is what comes out of his mouth and the way he says the things he says which makes him a pretty funny character. Bonnie Hunt was amazing as Jan Edgecomb because she was very supportive, sensitive and understanding with Paul. Her, Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan are the best in this film.
Frank Darabont creates another masterpiece just like The Shawshank Redemption but is better. Darabont does best prison films. Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile are both Stephen King novels which is another reason why I love The Green Mile so much. The script was very good with a lot of powerful and deeply effective scenes to the characters.
The reality of the Green Mile is that death in the electric chair used to happen, crimes like rape and murder happen a lot and also some people may wish that there was a miracle in this world like John Coffey.
The chemistry between Paul and John at first was just like how Paul treates normal prisoners but when John performs a few miracles Paul becomes suspicious of whether he is innocent because of the gift that John has. The relationship between Paul, Brutal, Harry and Dean with Percy is hate because Percy is a troublemaker in the wrong place and he doesn't do his job correctly like the others do. They wanted Percy out of the block as soon as he had the job. The chemistry between Percy and Del is unpleasant because Percy both physically and emotionally abused Del. Because the fact Del had a mouse in his cell who he calls Mr. Jingles and is happy with it and he gets along with Paul, Brutal, Harry and Dean really well like they were friends with him. There is an evil, cold blooded end to Del by Percy in which you will have to see for yourself.
This film has fantastic sound effects particularly in the electric chair executions. It made us want to feel the lightning and the pain the prisoner is getting. The art direction was very original of a prison but was quite bizarre too because the whole prison was pretty much green. The setting mixed well with the prison guards costumes because they are green too but a darker green. They were very classic and very historic which made this look like a film made in 1935 when it was really made just 10 years ago.
This film was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Picture but lost to American Beauty, Best Supporting Actor (Michael Clarke Duncan) but lost to Michael Caine in The Cider House Rules, Best Adapted Screenplay but lost to The Cider House Rules and Best Sound but lost to The Matrix. This film earned only one Golden Globe nomination: Best Supporting Actor (Michael Clarke Duncan) but lost to Tom Cruise in Magnolia.
The Green Mile is the most tear-jerking film of all time tied with The Elephant Man. One of Tom Hanks' best films. His best is Forrest Gump. David Morse's best film too after appearing in Contact and Disturbia. This is Sam Rockwell's best performance too. He has been in a lot of recent films and also films from such great directors with great actors. It is a very personal masterpiece that you could just watch again and again and again because of how amazing it is.
"Hello. I am Princess Moanna, and I am not afraid of you."
Director: Guillermo Del Toro
Starring: Ivana Baquero, Sergi López, Maribel Verdú, Doug Jones
Running time: 119 minutes
Country: Mexico, Spain
Pan' Labyrinth is one of those extremely bizarre films that sticks the same way all the way through it. The story is very magical, very imaginative and very clever. It is a film with a large meaning to particularly younger children that fairy tales aren't really real. This has a lot of fantastic epic qualities within it. This is a fantastic example of fairy tales for adults just like Lord Of The Rings. It is a powerful story that sees through the eyes of a young girl. Pan's Labyrinth is a very emotional, heartbreaking and yet beautiful film which has fantastic qualities within cinema. Pan's Labyrinth ends in a similar sort of way Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain did.
Ivana Baquero delivers an absolutely outstanding performance as Ofelia. She goes through a lot of rollercoasters in this film which includes the three tasks Pan sets for her, looking after her pregnant mother and being around and obeying her evil stepfather. I remember when Ofelia's mother said to her that fairy tales aren't realy and never have happened and never will happen. So, that makes me question whether Pan, the fairies, the Pale Man, the tasks and the other creatures are just in Ofelia's imagination. Ivana's performance was very powerful and was very heartfelt which can be rare from a child in a film. It is definitely one of my top child female performances. Sergi López brings together one of the coldest film monsters of all time that is Captain Vidal. He kills innocent people for no reason but it is mostly how he kills them which makes Vidal a very dominant and powerful character to watch.
Guillermo Del Toro uses his typical visual style in this film. I think he imagines this film in his head as a similar sort of way Tim Burton did with Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. Del Toro's directing was so precise and he wanted the performances from the actors decent enough for his type of film. The script is fantastic. It is very original which makes it a bit like a cult fantasy film.
The reality of this film is that there is a war going on within but Ofelia is in another war of her own with Pan by trying to complete the three tasks to get the full moon. Also Pan seems to be one of those characters that people could be haunted by. The Pale Man is even more haunting because he is a villain and he appears shit scary.
The relationship between Ofelia and Pan is very unusual because Pan suddenly requests so much from Ofelia which becomes too much from Ofelia which causes mistakes and can makes things a little wrose. Captain Vidal never really liked Ofelia because she isn't his daughter, because she is the daughter of his wife and he might end up having a female heir and being sexist in which he is he wants a son for him for take over Vidal when he dies. Ofelia had a closer relationship with Mercedes more than she did with her own mother because Mercedes could understand her and how she is feeling with the war and other various things.
The cinematography was fantastic with very funky, dark and real photographic images. This film's art direction was out of this world. It was very well designed not only by paint, objects etc but visually designed at top-notch. The setting hasn't even been similar to any other film that has ever been made. The only designable quality that Del Toro is really talented at is the make-up. It is very dark and very bright it depends on what sort of scenery and what sort of character it is. Del Toro always uses disfigured make-up that looks really or looks like there is a mask on the person's face. The costumes were outstanding too which combined perfectly with the cinematography, art direction and make-up. The visual effects were awesome too mostly at the end. The music was very well put together. It was touching, beautiful and thrilling.
This film won three Academy Awards: Best Art Direction, Best Make-Up and Best Cinematography. It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay but lost to Little Miss Sunshine, Best Foreign Language Film but lost to The Lives Of Others and Best Music Score but lost to Babel.
This is my favourite Del Toro film so far, it is my second favourite film of 2006 after The Departed, it is one of my close favourite fantasy films, it is my favourite foreign language film. It is a film that is almost tied with Sweeney Todd for film with best art direction, the same with best film with best make-up. One of my most treasured films ever! Love it to bits! Always have and always will!
Director: Frank Capra Starring: James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell Running time: 130 minutes Country: USA
It's A Wonderful Life is the ultimate classic in my opinion and there are a lot of reasons for this. It is a beautiful story that is such an inspiration to thousands of people around the world as it is to me, it is one of the rare family black-and-white films that I think everybody could understand, it shows how wonderful life really is. It also shows the beauty of family and friendship too. When I was first going to watch It's A Wonderful Life I knew I was going to like this film a lot but I had no idea that I was going to love it as much as I actually did. After seeing It's A Wonderful Life, I now realise why it is refered as "the ultimate feel-good film". At the ending of the film and the beautiful character that is George Bailey, I was almost in tears which ultimately touched me the most about this film. I love films that involve different aspects of life like ways of living and what can be achieved too. I like to call It's A Wonderful Life "The Classic Of Classics" because that is what it is. It is a film that a lot of people would appreciate because it is a classic story and it is a Christmas film but some people won't because they are too fussy because "it is too old". There are films in the past that have been absolutely fantastic but none of them are as magical and inspiring as It's A Wonderful Life. Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, Pinocchio and Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs come close to beating It's A Wonderful Life.
James Stewart delivers in my opinion his best and probably most famous performance of his career as George Bailey. As a child in 1919, George was a hero by saving the life of his younger brother Harry from falling through ice but George caught a cold that became an ear infection and left him half-deaf in one of his ears. From childhood, George's greatest ambition has been to see the world and design bridges and skyscrapers. However, George repeatedly has to sacrifice his dreams for the well-being of the people of Bedford Falls. George works and owns the Bailey Building & Loan Association but since that became in danger because of the problems that go on with Mr. Potter. George ends up attempting suicide on Christmas Eve and is "rescued" by Clarence who is his guardian angel. He shows George what Bedford Falls would be like without him if he never existed. Stewart hasn't really portrayed a family character but he did an absolutely outstanding job of it in this film. Somehow, I was expecting it because James Stewart was one of the best actors of all time and still is. Donna Reed's performance as Mary Hatch (who later becomes Mrs. Mary Bailey) was really awesome as well. Mary has always had a crush on George since she was a little girl and her dreams of being together with George become reality. Reed makes Mary seem like a really caring, loving and loyal person as a wife as well as a mother to her and George's children. Lionel Barrymore was absolutely fantastic as well as banker Mr. Henry Potter. Mr. Potter is one of the coldest film characters of all time because he shows no mercy or loyalty for George. When George is desperate he doesn't help him at all, he just makes things worse for him, his family and his business. He is heartless, cold, apathetic and really evil all the way through the film. He tries to gain control of Bedford Falls by making the businesses within it go downfall in which almost happens to George. Barrymore was perfect for the character because he really did look evil and a sinster man who deserves a slap or punch across the face.
I didn't know about Capra before I saw It's A Wonderful Life but now his work in all of the films he has done in the past are legendary because I think he is refered as "the feel-good director" because he has done films in the past filled with hope, courage and a sense of achieving things. He is a director with such inspiration it is untrue. Capra worked on It's A Wonderful Life like he wanted us to feel something about life that we hadn't felt before: how unusual life can become but also how beautiful it can be as well.
It was nominated for 5 Oscars: Best Picture 1946 but lost to The Best Years Of Our Lives, Best Leading Actor (James Stewart) but lost to Fredric March in The Best Years Of Our Lives, Best Director (Frank Capra) but lost to William Wyler in The Best Years Of Our Lives, Best Sound Recording but lost to The Jolson Story and Best Film Editing but lost to The Best Years Of Our Lives.
It's A Wonderful Life is a tie with E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the best family film of all time. It is my favourite classic film which is why I call it "The Classic Of Classics". It is the best film of the 1940s, it is Capra and Stewart's best film and is definitely one of my close-favourite films of all time.
"We take the Indian Trail to the Tree of the Dead."
Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson
Running time: 105 minutes
Country: USA, Germany
Before Sweeney Todd was released, Sleepy Hollow was the darkest Tim Burton film. Sleepy Hollow is a film that does look like a horror film but way I see it, it's just a fantasy thriller. A bit like what I could call I Am Legend as well. It is very action-packed but in a more horror-thriller sort of way. Sleepy Hollow is to me one of the most fun films ever despite it's very dark story. It is adapted from a novel that is rather scary, dark and mysterious. There was an animated film about Sleepy Hollow and that one was scarier than the live action adaptation. Sleepy Hollow is really tense because of what the Headless Horseman is capable of and who is going to be his next victim.
Ichabod Crane is Johnny Depp's most heroic character in a Tim Burton film. I loved Johnny's performance as Ichabod Crane because I really was interested in his character. His intentive technology was really cool, bizarre and creative. Ichabod has a past that comes back to haunt him during the Headless Horseman investigation. Christina Ricci was good and hot has Katrina Van Tassel. Michael Gambon was good as Baltus Van Tassel as well. This film has a lot of British actors and actresses in it including Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson, Ian McDiarmid, Christopher Lee and Richard Griffiths.
Tim Burton has created a dark masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. Sleepy Hollow is the one Tim Burton film we have been waiting a long time for which makes it absolutely typical of Tim to direct a film like this. Because Ed Wood felt more like a comedy, Sleepy Hollow brought fantasy and more seriousness within his films.
Sleepy Hollow is my third favourite Tim Burton film after Sweeney Todd and Edward Scissorhands. It is also my fifth favourite Johnny Depp film after Sweeney Todd, Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl, Edward Scissorhands and Finding Neverland. It is my third favourite Depp-Burton collaboration too after Sweeney Todd and Edward Scissorhands. This is one of my favourite and one of the best films of 1999 which was a great year in cinema. Sleepy Hollow is a masterful mystery film in which not many films are. Sleepy Hollow is an amazing fantasy thriller that I could and have watched over and over again.
"You're a fool, Harry Potter, and you will lose everything."
Director: David Yates
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Michael Gambon
Running time: 138 minutes
Country: UK, USA
This film really thrilled me because of the action sequences and it left me clueless of what was going to happen (unless you have read the novels). This is the one Harry Potter film that starts to become a new Harry Potter who is a growing up teenager and starts to realise who he is and what his job is with Voldemort and about wanting to fight off Voldemort and stop him. This makes this film the most action packed aswell which made is more adult too. This film makes me feel good because this is the Harry Potter out of the seven films that totally changes everything and makes the Harry Potter character along with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger more adult and typical teenage people. I thought the acting was superb.
Daniel Radcliffes was superb because Daniel was more emotional and acted really desperate and extremely stressed out because he wanted everyone to believe him that Lord Voldemort has returned and it affects his relationship between Harry and Dumbledore even though Dumbledore is one of the very few people who believes him. Daniel really improves his performance as Harry. He was really bad in the first two films, he was good in 3 and 4 but amazing in this. I think his performance in this film is one of the best performances from a young actor of all time. Ron Weasley and Emma Watson are awesome once again as they are in all 5 films so far. Imelda Stauntons performance is amazing as Dolores Umbridge. Imelda makes a very dark and psychotic character in the Harry Potter franchise that nobody has ever seen before. Imelda speaks very softly for such a very psychotic character which is really quite scary. Despite of Daniels brilliant performance, I have to say that Imelda Stauntons performance is the best from the film and is the best performance from the whole franchise. I love Alan Rickman as Snape and Emma Watson as Hermione aswell. I thought that Imelda Staunton was so good, I think that she deserved a possible Golden Globe or even an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Dolores Umbridge. This film has another different director from the four previous films and for good reason too.
David Yates directs this film ever so well that makes this film a really touching emotional family fantasy film compared to the other four. Not just the script makes it emotional but also the acting and the scenes within the film too. The camera angles are really clever especially when they zoom around the news of the Daily Prophet in when there are news about Harry, Dumbledore, Umbridge, Voldemort or anyone else.
This film brings a brand new level of the rest of the Harry Potter films because of the dark designs, the dark characters and dark script aswell. This film is definitely the best Harry Potter film so far and might always be my favourite Harry Potter. It is quite weird because Order Of The Phoenix is the longest novel of all seven but the shortest film of the five films. It is one of my favourite fantasy films of all time.
"Don't stand in the way of my actualization as a man."
Director: Spike Jonze Starring: John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener, John Malkovich Running time: 112 minutes Country: USA
Being John Malkovich is one of the weirdest films that I have ever seen. It has a very weird story which is a very heard thinking plot in a motion picture because of how effective it can be if one enters another person's mind and how it can work. On the weird side to the story, it is both sick and weird that a portal is invented and can control a person's mind. Actually, it is also pretty insane. This is a very imaginative film that people can just think of out of their heads. I have to say that Being John Malkovich is, yes, one of the weirdest but it is the best weird film that has adapted together the best. I ws confused and puzzled what was with the small offices in the film and the low roofs. A question that I have asked myself alot before and after I watched the film and that I still don't know the answer to. Why is it John Malkovich as himself? Why him? There can be any actor in the world who can portray themself but John Malkovich was chosen.
I have never been a strong admirer of John Cusack at all. After watching this film, I don't like him at all now. Just think he should just give up acting just like his sister Joan Cusack. He isn't as bad as her though. I haven't seen many films from John but I have to say that he is one of the weakest actors. I was really impressed with Cameron Diaz's performance because it was absolutely fantastic which is very rare froim her. She had that absolutely nuts side to her personality as far as her sexuality is concerned. Also, her transgender side aswell. Cameron's appearance was a real fascination to me because she looked like a 70-80 year old bag but Cameron is really a young, hot and very attractive actress. She should have had an Oscar nomination either instead of or alongside Catherine Keener in this film. Catherine's performance was even better than Cameron Diaz's because not so much that the character was more powerful but because she made a slightly better impression of the character she was portraying. John Malkovich was the best because he was only portraying his normal self. In the scenes where Malkovich is questioned by a fan, it seems like an ordinary interview or walking into the public in real life either in front or not in front of the screen. He made me laugh a lot as he has always done.
I have now started to become very admired by Spike Jonze's work for quite a few reasons. Those reasons include he hasn't done a bad film yet for me, he was married to great director but terrible actress Sofia Coppola. Most importantly, he has done very bizarre films that truly have become masterpieces just like Stanley Kubrick and especially David Lynch which is where I find Jonze's work so fascinating. The script was very well adapted and is a mixture between genres comedy, drama and fantasy.
I loved Cameron Diaz in this film but liked her more in Gangs Of New York and Shrek. This is my second favourite film from John Malkovich. I do still love him in Johnny English though. I loved both Being John Malkovich and Adaptation so can't say what my favourite is from Spike Jonze. It will probably be Being John Malkovich. I think it should have been a contender for Best Picture. Masterpiece! Bring us more masterpieces, Jonze.
"Now you're beside me, and look how far we've come, so far. We are so close."
Director: Kevin Lima
Starring: Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Timothy Spall
Running time: 107 minutes
Country: USA
I was actually really surprised by how amazing this film turned out to be. Yes, it is a film for kids but that doesn't stop me from loving it. It is a really smart story based on characters from Disneys past. Some people say it makes fun or spoofs them in which it does do but that flows with the story in a very unique way. There will be some people who won't appreciate Enchanted for being a bright hearted kids film and like Disney making fun of Disney so to speak. Enchanted is enchanted. It is also magnificently filmed, incredible, beautiful, charming and really funny. I have to call Enchanted one of the smartest films I have ever seen. Enchanted is one of those films that has become such a blockbuster and has become very popular for families. Others like Harry Potter, Twilight, High School Musical, Shrek, Pirates Of The Caribbean and PIXAR films. Enchanted is a story that begins animated like watching a Disney Classic but has a bit of a twist but one that you were expecting where it goes live-action is Manhattan, New York. Enchanted is a film that you can use your imagination for. It is a film that is mixed between fairy tales and reality. That is where there is humour for little kids regarding animals but there is quite a few adult mature jokes involved too but obviously not that crude.
Amy Adams was absolutely fabulous as Giselle. I figured that Adams is the only actress in Hollywood who would have been able to portray Giselle absolutely perfectly in which she did. Just by watching her as Giselle really made Adams look a lot younger for her age. She looks in her early 20s in the film but she is in her mid 30s in real life which gave me great shock when I saw. Amy Adams thankfully doesn't ruin any of the Disney Princesses personalities especially Aurora, Snow White and Cinderella because her personality and the whole film in general was a mixture between three of those Disney Classics. Amy Adams brings together one of the most delightful, beautiful and most enjoyable characters that I have ever seen on-screen before. So far, Enchanted is Amy Adams best film and probably her most famous one too. Patrick Dempsey surprised me as well. He turned out to be a great surprice with another great performance. No, he isn't one of the best film heroes ever but he was heroic in a more emotional way. Watching Dempsey portray Robert was a charming performance because he truly did look like Giselle's knight in shining armour. James Marsden was really funny as Prince Edward because he really was a nice guy but was a bit of a self-absorbed sort of person but he was a bit of an idiot as well. Timothy Spall is always good at portraying those slimy, scheming and sinister sorts of characters and also, he is good at playing a complete idiot which is basically why he was a perfect choice for Nathaniel. Susan Sarandon was probably the biggest hit star in it because she's obviously an Oscar winning actress. In Enchanted, her performance was good but she wasn't really in it that much. It was her voice more than her actual body being involved. She was a good villain but there have been some villains in Disney Classics that have been really scary and have freaked me out in the past when I was a kid such as Maleficent. I think her character is based on Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty and also the Queen in Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs in Enchanted but Sarandon didn't quite bring that fearful side to Queen Narissa. But the make-up and the costumes looked really great on her.
The director proved me and probably a lot of people wrong about Enchanted. Not only did Kevin Lima make it magical and imaginitive for kids but he also did for teenagers and adults as well. I hope there won't be a sequel or remake of this film because this film is amazing enough on its own without another film ruining it. The script is very original. I think it is mixed between Disney Classics such as Sleeping Beauty, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs in Cinderella. Thankfully, the mixed script just made the story make sense and made it seem really clever to watch. Also because it's a musical and a really new Disney film I was predicting it to be a really bad film and I was dead wrong.
Enchanted is without a doubt one of the smartest films ever in my opinion. It is one of the best films of 2007 and that is definitely the best year in cinema of the decade. It is Amy Adams' best performance and probably always will be in my opinion. She was awesome in Doubt as well but was a totally different character. To me, Amy Adams in Enchanted in 2007 was like Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky in 2008. Enchanted is one of the rare recent musicals that turned out really good. Others include Sweeney Todd, Mamma Mia!, Moulin Rouge! and Chicago. Enchanted is a film that I could definitely watch again and again because of its pure beauty and its amazing mixture between fairy tales and reality.
"Do us a favor... I know it's difficult for you... but please, stay here, and try not to do anything... stupid."
Director: Gore Verbinski
Starring: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley
Running time: 137 minutes
Country: USA
The Curse Of The Black Pearl is an awesome start to one of the most popular franchises of all time. I have to say the franchise is very overrated especially Dead Man's Chest but I do love the franchise. Curse Of The Black Pearl is the best one of the three for the family as well as the best of the three overall. The first one isn't the funniest but it is the most fun which is really the basic point of the series anyway. It can be quite scary regarding the skeletons but it is still called a family film after all. It is an epic fantasy story that is very tense as well as explosive and hilarious.
This franchise probably wouldn't be half as popular than it already is it Johnny Depp wasn't portraying Jack Sparrow. Jack Sparrow is Johnny's own character. His portrayal of Jack Sparrow leads him to his first Oscar nomination. He is perfect! He's hilarious, clumsy, scheming and also pretty explosive when it comes to the action scenes. Jack is a really weird character to watch because there has never been any film character like Captain Jack Sparrow in cinema before. Johnny portraying Captain Jack is one of the very few perfect performances by an actor portraying a character. If any other actor portraying him, there would be no Captain Jack Sparrow. He is Johnny Depp's most famous film character. I really don't like Orlando Blood at all let alone him playing Will Turner in Pirates Of The Caribbean. Orlando didn't make Will's character very realistic or heroic in any way whatsoever. I never really felt any love for Elizabeth that Will had. A rival Heartthrob and a far better actor than Orlando Bloom who was around the same age was the late Heath Ledger. Now, he would have been an ace Will Turner. They should have stuck with him instead of shitty Orlando Bloom. I like Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann because she showed Elizabeth's change of heart as the film goes on. She slowly starts to become a slightly different person but she still wears the same clothes. Keira is best remembered for Pirates Of The Caribbean but I liked her performances more in The Duchess and Atonement. Geoffrey Rush was hilarious and really cold-hearted as Captain Hector Barbossa. The make-up design was the best on him because he had a bit of a wrinkled, distorted and messy face with scars and cuts. His performance as Barbossa creates one of the best film villains of all time.
Gore Verbinski really managed really well with this film because it was like the franchise is a dark one but they managed to make a franchise for the family because of its pure entertainment and really amazing characters. Verbinski has created a franchise that is overrated and too popular but is one that people can't help but love. The script was really amazing as well. It was written a bit like it was written from a novel but I obviously know that Pirates Of The Caribbean aren't novels; they are just made-up stories.
Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl is one of the best family films of the decade, it is one of my favourite films of 2003, it is Johnny Depp's fourth best performance after Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, Edward Scissorhands and Finding Neverland. To be honest, Orlando Bloom's performance in Pirates Of The Caribbean particularly the third one is the worst supporting male performance of all time. Yes, worst than Hayden Christensen in Star Wars especially Attack Of The Clones but only just. It is one of the most popular franchises of all time and it totally deserves to be. Masterpiece!!
Director: Victor Fleming
Starring: Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr
Running time: 101 minutes
Country: USA
When I first saw this film on DVD, I wasn't that keen on it for some reason. I don't know why this is but when I saw it for the second time, I realised what an adventurous, beautiful, funny, imaginitive and tense family film this really is. I think The Wizard Of Oz is the oldest children's live-action film and it blew me away with how well it was filmed because the visual effects stunned me. No, they aren't computer visual effects like Lord Of The Rings, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Transformers etc but it is a film from the 1930s which were the extremely early days for technology as well as for cinema. Some people have been a bit biast against this film by saying that the visual effects are awful but to be honest they are being fair because it was made such a long time ago and it was just simple visual effects which are after all part of the classics. It is a beautiful story that goes beyond words. It is a real cinematic experience as well as a life experience too because of the way Oz is and what it looks like could be what heaven's like. It is a good impression of it anyway. The Wizard Of Oz is an absolutely magical musical as well with lots of delightful songs that you could sing along to quite regularly. The classic and my favourite song of this film is "Over The Rainbow" which is definitely one of the best film songs ever made!
Judy Garland's performance as Dorothy Gale is her most famous film without a doubt and I am ever so glad it is because Garland was a very talented actress. She can quite annoying with her accent at times but it's her acting talent that I really appreciate and deeply respect her for. Judy Garland was an absolute hot star after The Wizard Of Oz and probably still is now after 40 years since she died. Judy Garland was only 16 years old when she portrayed Dorothy and she really impressed me. She is a bit like a child-star because she looked like an adult but was really only a teenager at the time. That is something that is extremely underrated. Dorothy's character is a lot like Alice in Alice In Wonderland because they both dress pretty much the same, behave the same and also seem like the same sort of people. Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr were all good as the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion. The make-up is unrealistic on the Cowardly Lion but is awesome on Scarecrow and Tin Man because that's the point. It is a classic film that is very old and it is probably the first attempt at creating top-notch make-up in a live-action color film whereas you can't really tell with a black-and-white film. We don't know how the Scarecrow and Tin Man went from men into the way they are in The Wizard Of Oz but there is a play called "Wicked" which is like a prequel to The Wizard Of Oz and it actually gets itself involved into The Wizard Of Oz. So, it tells the story in that play.
Victor Fleming directs two films in 1939 that are totally different but have two things in common: they can both be inspirations and also they are two of the best films of all time. Those two films are The Wizard Of Oz and Gone With The Wind. Fleming proves to me that he can go from the first romantic epic to a childrens fantasy musical. There was nothing that went wrong with The Wizard Of Oz in any way whatsoever. The script was adapted form the great novel which was published in 1900. The Wizard Of Oz is very similar if not the same kind of film Alice In Wonderland is.
The Wizard Of Oz is a beautiful, inspiring and hilarious classic that I could watch over and over again. I can't call this a childhood favourite of mine because I was 15 when I first saw it and I can't believe why I was that age when I saw it. Victor Fleming's best and most famous work is obviously Gone With The Wind but The Wizard Of Oz is another fine achievement to his legendary career. It is Judy Garland's best performance and most famous film of all time. The Wizard Of Oz is one of the best family adventures of all time as well as one of the best musicals and best films ever made too.

Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Helena Bonham Carter
Running time: 120 minutes
Country: USA
Big Fish was really knocked around at the start before it was released because it is a film from Tim Burton which is really bright and heartwarming which isnt really like him. Also because there wasnt any actors involved in this film who have been in a film with Tim Burton before apart from Helena Bonham Carter and Danny DeVito. I thought that at first but when I saw this film, I was totally blown away by how beautiful this film really is. I think the odds of the success of this film at first were against Tim because of how different this film is. But some people state that this film is his best film. People would choose either Big Fish, Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Beetlejuice or Ed Wood. This film made me feel really good because of its beautiful story and its inspiring characters within it. It also had a very cute meaning because it tought me what life really is about which is what a lot of films have tought me. It is a heartwarming fairy tale that is complex for a family film and is very creative and magical. This is inside Tim Burton's imagination just like Edward Scissorhands. I am unsure whether than fantasy place where Bloom went where he met that giant Karl and met a few other characters was in his imagination or really happening. That is why I have to say that this is Tim Burton's most complex film so far.
Ewan McGregors performance as young Ed Bloom was really good. His acting was like Ed was confused with the fantasy world and the illusion he was involved in with himself. Albert Finney's performance was awesome! It was the best from the whole film. He really do anything wrong at all with his acting. He did look like a really adorable heartwarming actor to portray a character like that. He looks like Ewan McGregor aswell so that's another reason why. Albert was snubbed of an Oscar nomination. Personally, I think that when there are scenes with Ewan as Bloom and Albert as Bloom, they are obviously the same character but I do find for some reason them both to be portraying different sorts of characters. Billy Crudup was really good too as Will Bloom because he makes him act like more of a curious yet passionate character than I was expecting he was going to be. Jessica Lange was really good aswell as elder Sandra Bloom. Helena Bonham Carters second collaboration with partner Tim Burton was a far better one than their previous film together which was Planet Of The Apes. I find Jenny's character a very mysterious character because she has always had a little crush on Ed Bloom ever since she was a little girl. Also, because of why she is so lonely, why she always has her cats with her and also why she lived in a random house in the woods. That is why I think Helena was really good for her character. I found the witch character quite a confusing character to calculate because I didnt really understand what was with her eye. I did think that maybe it could tell the future. The costume on Helena was really good which made her look similar to Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. But make-up on her for the witch was obviously very good but didnt look anything like Mrs. Lovett. Steve Buscemi was really good in this film as Norther Winslow. He makes me laugh all time which is why I think Steve Buscemi deserves to be a character like Norther Winslow because he was a humourous character to witness. Danny DeVito made me laugh aswell as he always does aswell as circus ringmaster Amos Calloway. I liked Alison Lohman as young Sandra Bloom and also Oscar winner Marion Cotillard as Will Blooms pregnant wife Josephine.
Tim Burtons direction in Big Fish is in a lot of ways typical from Tim but in a different way it is a new way of direction from Tim Burton. Tim Burton's Big Fish is like Robert Zemeckis' Forrest Gump and David Fincher's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. Tim Burton has made this film his second most heartwarming film after Edward Scissorhands. Also, he made Big Fish his brighest (brightly coloured) film yet. As I said, I think the odds were against Tim with the success of this film because of how bright this film really is. There is a lot of bright colours involved especially when Bloom enters that land where there is bright lights, beautiful houses and really nice people. In a slight way at the same time, I find that like typical Tim Burton because it is like a setting and a film that a guy is in an extremely bizzare sort of illusion with himself and his life. It was like overrated because obviously its Tim Burton but can be underrated too because it is a Tim Burton film that not many people really appreciate because of its bright characters. The script was awesome aswell. This film is a novel but if it was without the fantasy world, the giant and the business with Bloom and the large fish then this would have been an excellent life story. It is a script that tries to revolutionise the meaning of life. But it does try and beat other previous classic films that try and show us what life really is about. Still a class script though.
This is my favourite Albert Finney film so far. Ewan McGregor was awesome in this film but I prefer his acting in Moulin Rouge!, Trainspotting the Star Wars prequel trilogy and The Island. I loved Helena Bonham Carter in this film too as Jenny but I prefer her in Sweeney Todd obviously. Danny DeVito and Steve Buscemi made me laugh in this film too and their performances were really good aswell. I did love this film from Tim Burton obviously but I prefer Burton films Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow. Big Fish is a masterpiece and a masterpiece that should have been nominated for Best Picture. That is where I find this film like Sweeney Todd because they are both films that have been snubbed from the Best Picture Oscar nominations. They are the only two Tim Burton films that have ever been close. I dont think Tim Burton will ever make another brightly charactered film like this ever again. If he does then it cant be better than Big Fish because it is a masterpiece and is one of the best films of 2003. Big Fish is pure magic that I absolutely love!

When I first saw the DVD cover and a couple of pictures of The Fifth Element, I thought it looked really bizarre but interesting at the same time. When I did see it, I actually liked it more than I thought I would. In fact, I was blown away by this film. I love films about planets and space which is why I love films like Star Wars and Star Trek. I figured that a couple of things were ripped off from The Fifth Element as well as The Fifth Element ripping things off as well. The sceneries on Earth with the floating vehicles and the cities in the sky was ripped off by the prequel Star Wars trilogy. The Fifth Element copied that from Ridley Scott's Blade Runner too which is where that kind of thing originally came from. This film reminded me a lot of Star Trek (2009 film) because the dialogue would be something that would be used in a Star Trek film. Obviously the visual effects did as well and the genre it was part of. It shows that history is a myth most of the time but shows that it should be taken seriously as well. The Fifth Element would make a good family film because it has a wide range of things within the film that can expand your imagination just like you can with epic sci fis like Star Trek and especially Star Wars.
Bruce Willis' performance was fabulous as ... He goes through a hard time because he has separated from his wife and lives alone with his cat. Also, he gets frustrated with a job being a taxi driver. He inadvertently meets Leeloo who is the so-called Fifth Element who can destroy evil and save the world alongside other Ancient stones: earth, wind, water and fire. It was really weird seeing Bruce Willis with blonde hair because we usually see him either with black hair or almost if not completely bald. Gary Oldman was pretty funny as Zorg who wants to find the stones and destroy the world. He was an idiotic villain but was actually quite frightening at times due to his desperation to find the stones. Milla Jovovich was good as Leeloo who is the Fifth Element. Before they made her in human form, she was one of those extra-terrestrial robot-aliens and they had the remaining parts of her. She was a good choice because she seemed a woman who can play that kind of character. Mixing the clothes that she wore with the hair colour she had made her seem a bit of a weirdo but also a gorgeous woman. Ian Holm is a really good actor who has been in a lot of famous films over the years. His performance as Cornelius was awesome! Cornelius was the man who would tell everybody the truth of what could happen.
Luc Besson caught my attention when I saw Léon: The Professional because I loved that one. I admire his work even more now after seeing The Fifth Element. Everything about this film was beautifully and creativity crafted. J.J. Abrams would have done a decent job at this film but I am glad that Luc Besson did it though. Personally, I don't think there are many science fiction epics at all because they don't feel like epics and some don't have realistic or powerful characters within it. The film was really well written which did surprise me. I think everything about this film surprised me as it did with Star Trek (apart from, perhaps, the visual effects).
The Fifth Element is another science fiction film that will expand your imagination from start to finish. I think it is one of Bruce Willis best films; same with Gary Oldman. It is one of the best films of 1997 as well as one of the best science fiction films ever!

I absolutely love this film! This film is one of the weirdest films that I think I have ever seen. I was really excited about this one because Charlie And The Chocolate Factory seemed like a fun family film to watch and it was. I hadn't seen the original version of the Roald Dahl novel so I don't really have a proper reason why I was really excited about seeing this film. I am a big fan of Roald Dahl novels like Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, The BFG, James And The Giant Peach, Matilda and Fantastic Mr. Fox. The BFG is my favourite novel but Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is my favourite film based on Roald Dahl novels. This film really made me laugh and I melted at it too because it is a very beautiful film that teaches lessons to everybody. I think it mostly teaches that everybody should be grateful for what they have because Charlie is a very poor little boy who doesn't get half as what other children get. Also, family comes before anything no matter what.
Johnny Depp really impressed me as Willy Wonka. I think that he's way better than Gene Wilder! You can tell it's Johnny Depp but the make-up on Willy Wonka makes it look like he's not. Some people find Johnny's Wonka pretty freaky whereas I don't really. However, I do think that Johnny's Mad Hatter in Alice In Wonderlanddoes seem scary. His performance as Willy Wonka will, I think, be the same kind when we see him as the Mad Hatter. Johnny Depp is really funny as Willy Wonka which is something that I think anyone will get out of Johnny in a family film or a comedy. Freddie Highmore is my favourite child actor. This film confirms that spot because his performance as Charlie Bucket was out of this world. Highmore made Charlie a very cute, innocent, grateful and kind young boy. I read that Johnny wanted Highmore to play Charlie because they worked well together in Finding Neverland and that was an inspiration to Johnny and for Tim to pick Freddie for Charlie. Despite Helena Bonham Carter being spouse to Tim Burton, she hadn't been in a leading female role until Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. Helena portrayed Mrs. Bucket. She worked alongside Noah Taylor who was Mr. Bucket. Deep Roy was awesome as the Oompa Loompas inside Willy Wonka's factory. Annasophia Robb was the best of the other four Golden Ticket winners.
Tim Burton is an absolute genius at creating such an absolutely amazing film! This was the first Tim Burton film that I watched. I didn't really know what Tim Burton had done previously at that time but now I obviously do. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory wasn't the film that made me into Tim Burton. That spot belongs to best film ever Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is absolutely brilliantly filmed with such bright sceneries and dark ones at the same time which is typical Tim Burton. I can almost guarantee that Alice In Wonderland will be just like this because of it being a childrens novel, it being a remake of two novels and also because of some of the characters being quite similar. Also, because this film as well as Alice In Wonderland have a very large ensemble cast with a lot of talented actors and actresses (particularly British). The technical qualities that Charlie And The Chocolate Factory has such as costumes, art direction, cinematography, make-up and visual effects are other reasons why Alice In Wonderland will be like it.
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is one of my favourite fantasy films as well as one of my favourite family films. 2005 had lots of awesome summer blockbusters. This is my second favourite summer blockbuster after Star Wars: Episode III ? Revenge Of The Sith. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is still one of my favourite films of 2005. It is definitely one of Johnny's best. It is one of Tim's best films too. I prefer Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and Big Fish though. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is one of the most extraordinary, unusual films that I have ever watched and really appreciate due to this. Love this film!

The Prestige is an absolutely fantastic film! I was blown away by how extraordinary this film really was. The film is pure magic about magic. Magic + magic = almost perfection. The Prestige looks like a very magical and beautiful film on the cover and looking at the still pics but it isn't as bright and beautiful as it looks. This is one of the darkest films I think I've ever watched. The Prestige is a film that changes its course of plot every 20-30 minutes because there is an unexpected twist. Despite how many twists there are, I don't find it flawed. I was blown away by how many there was and how well worked out they were. It is a beautiful film on love but it is a heartbreaking story that beats down on friendship. There are a lot of different moments in the film that become very severe and drastic consequences. The Prestige is a film that I really do admire for it's artistic design and the way it was filmed. It has absolutely outstanding cinematography and costume design.
Hugh Jackman was absolutely incredible as Robert Angier. Robert Angier is the more experienced magician. Angier is a married man to a beautiful woman called Julia. Something tragically happens which effects him as well as the whole film. That was the very first deeply effective twist. Christian Bale is even better as Alfred Borden. He is a rather sinister, scheming yet rather twisted young man who becomes deeply jealous of Angier because of his talent. They always try and destroy each other by making them fail their tricks or worse by getting in their personal lives. Michael Caine is a fantastic actor who is really good at playing alongside Christian Bale particularly in Nolan films like he does in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Scarlett Johansson was another big star in this masterpiece! Her performance was good but it isn't one of her greatest performances. I think she could have improved a little bit more but she did fine in this film. I really liked Rebecca Hall in this film as Sarah Borden. She was the most emotional character I think because she worries for her husband Alfred and their daughter Jess. Andy Serkis was cool in this film as well as Mr. Alley.
Christopher Nolan is a masterful filmmaker! He proves himself to be once again in another masterpiece that he can add to his outstanding filmography. Despite how many Oscars this film was nominated for I think that it should have been nominated for some more like a script one, a directing one, a costume design or a music Oscar nomination. Nolan is a fantastic director and he always has been. I really like Nolan as a screenwriter too. He writes really well with his brother Jonathan Nolan.
The Prestige is a magical, depressing, heartracing, heartbreaking masterpiece that I was left speechless right at the end of it. This is Nolan's second best film after obviously The Dark Knight. The Prestige is one of the fantastic masterpieces of 2006 and that wasn't a brilliant year in cinema. The Prestige is a film that I think everybody should watch because people would love it for the beautiful filming but also the twists and turns that occur within the dialogue of the story.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas was a childhood favourite of mine that I absolutely loved when I was a child but I still really love it now! It is just too magical and hilarious to dislike. Yes, it is a very unusual film but that is what most children's films are like. This film became and still is a massive success in my opinion; not only with the Oscars it won and was nominated for and the love people have for it but also the box office takings it earned. How The Grinch Stole Christmas is an ultimate Christmas classic in my opinion because pretty much every single Christmas, it has been on TV on Christmas Day ever since it was released. It is very inspiring as well because it shows the magic of Christmas, the true meaning of Christmas and also there isn't a specific way of celebrating Christmas; you just do it. All of Dr. Seuss' stories are all different but have the same kind of background and are filmed in similar sorts of ways. The costumes and art direction are absolutely awesome but the make-up is the best technical quality of this film. The make-up is almost as good as the make-up in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Pan's Labyrinth and Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events.
Jim Carrey was absolutely amazing as The Grinch. You can tell it's Jim Carrey when you see The Grinch in slapstick moments and also the voice but you wouldn't only because of the make-up. How The Grinch Stole Christmas would be absolutely crap without Jim Carrey. In fact, it would be nothing without him. Jim Carrey not only made The Grinch a hilarious and villainous character but a character with a soul and heart. Before How The Grinch Stole Christmas came out we were all used to see Jim Carrey in just hilarious comedies but we see him in still a hilarious film but a fantasy one that has drama within it that bring tears to people's eyes. Nobody could have played The Grinch better than Jim Carrey and it is as simple as that!
Ron Howard is one fine filmmaker who tries different things in each of the films he creates. His work on How The Grinch Stole Christmas was, in my opinion, one of his best works because he became a well known director. He previous did Apollo 13. I think that Howard doing this film was a bit of a risk because it was beyond any kind of film he has done before but this turned out to be absolutely brilliant! The script was absolutely hilarious and was well written for the right people. It didn't fail at all for me! This does seem like it would be a good Tim Burton film but I don't think it would have been as good as it really was. I can see Tim Burton doing an animated version in the future.
Overall, How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a really silly film that is absolutely hilarious to watch. It is heartbreaking and heartwarming to watch. How The Grinch Stole Christmas is like the Oscar Best Picture winner compared to The Cat In The Hat because that film was so bad. It is in my opinion Jim Carrey's best film. Ron Howard's best film is still Cinderella Man but this film is still one of his best films. How The Grinch Stole Christmas is one of the best films of 2000 in my opinion. This film was one of my childhood favourites and is without a doubt one of the best family films of all time.
"Would I be correct in thinking that you can neither see nor hear me? Then I'd like to tell you that you smell of pee. You look like the wrong end of a dog. And I swear, if I don't get my Tristan back as he was, I'll be your personal poltergeist!"

Wow! What an absolutely amazing film this is. Stardust is one of those films that is so beautiful to watch that just has a very simple story that you don't really need to focus very hard on regarding the story. There are some fantasy films that have some very messed up stories but adapt well in the end but this one didn't mess up at all. I find Stardust to be a very realistic story of how some of us would wish life would really be like. It is a film that made me wish that life was like that, well; a fairy tale even though I know it is very far from it. Stardust is a really funny film as well because of the characters involved. They are all just so original. Stardust is a film that is adapted from a novel of the same name. It is a British story. I do think that we Brits are the best at creating fantasy novels. We created Harry Potter, Narnia, Dark Materials, Lord Of The Rings and many more as well as Stardust. This film rivals with The Golden Compass for best fantasy film of the winter. Both are good films but Stardust is better in every aspect including more realistic effects, story and characters within. All of the characters bring a Disney like feeling to them with all the heroes and the villains, the funny characters and also the effects within. Stardust reminds me a lot of Enchanted and The Princess Bride because of this. Despite of the feelings of Disney about this film, I am glad this wasn't made by Disney because I think it would have flawed big time but it didn't flaw at all and it also would rival with Enchanted.
Stardust definitely has one of the best ensemble cast ever in my opinion with lots of talented actors and actresses. Charlie Cox was good as Tristan Thorn because he was a real charmer for the character and a really brilliant hero in the film that makes him like a Disney prince which made his acting really surprising. Claire Danes is the lead actress in this film and she is absolutely amazing as star Yvaine. She was probably the best choice for Yvaine because she is bloody gorgeous and she is a star anyway. Michelle Pfeiffer was the best out of the whole cast in this film. Pfeiffer looks really good for her age but she certainly does know how to portray a terrifying villain. Her character was like Susan Sarandon's in Enchanted apart from Lamia is a more interesting character. It was funny seeing Pfeiffer looking like an over 100-year-old woman but then seeing her like her ordinary self. She should play more villains in the future but not in a fantasy film because could ruin her great reputation of Lamia in this film. I was unsure of what to make of Robert De Niro in this film to start with but when I watched it, I was actually really surprised. He always plays every character so well no matter what sort of person they are. It was weird seeing Robert play a gay pirate but it was really good as well because I have always seen him play straight characters in the past. Perhaps he just decided he selected Stardust for fun not for serious Oscar worthy acting. Other cast members Mark Strong, Ricky Gervais, Sienna Miller, Rupert Everett, Jason Flemyng, David Walliams, Mark Williams, Ian McKellen, David Kelly and Peter O'Toole were all absolutely brilliant in thie roles as well.
Stardust is a beautifully filmed piece of treasured magic that I loved first time and loved again second time. I think I probably will after more viewings now. It is one of the best films of 2007 which is one of the best years in film ever. It isn't the best fantasy film of 2007 but it is the smartest and simplest though. It is better than both The Golden Compass and Enchanted. Stardust is a family masterpiece that is targeted at the right people and is made in the proper manner and it seems a pleasure, an honour and really good fun to be filming and be part of such a fantastic film like Stardust.
"Harry! I'd almost forgotten you were here, standing on the bones of my father. I'd introduce you, but rumor has it you're almost as famous as me these days."

I knew that I was going to love this one because it seemed a really fun film to watch and we get into the more personal side of things within the franchise. Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire is probably the only Harry Potter film with an unexpected twist. Actually, it has two twists. This one is darker than the first, second and third one but is better than all three of them because the story, the characters and the way it is filmed is much better. Goblet Of Fire is my favourite Harry Potter novel but not my favourite Harry Potter film. Goblet Of Fire leads to seeing darker sides of magic as well as Order Of The Phoenix because we learn about what happens with the killing, torture and control spells do. This one is the most imaginitive ones out of all 5 of the ones that have been released thus far especially with the three tasks of the Triwizard Tournament. I loved seeing this one at the cinema because it became a new experience of Harry Potter because it was the first one of the franchise to have a certificate of 12A/PG-13 at the cinema and I am sure now that the rest of the franchise will be 12A.
As I am seeing Dan, Rupert and Emma as the three main characters I think that I am starting to see what sort of people they are in real life now just as themselves. It is like I grew up with them and watched them grow as well as myself. Despite how good the cast of Harry Potter is, the cast expands a lot more now with stars like two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes, Brandon Gleeson, David Tennant, Robert Pattinson and Miranda Richardon. Daniel Radcliffe's performance as Harry Potter was in some people's opinion really bad but I thought it wasn't bad and it wasn't good either. I could see where Dan went a bit over the top and overreacts at times in which he does in some scenes but he made us see a much braver side to Harry especially when he entered the Triwizard Tournament. Dan's performance as Harry is lame in Philosopher's Stone, alright in Chamber Of Secrets, a lot better in Prisoner Of Azkaban, good in Goblet Of Fire and amazing in Order Of The Phoenix. Harry goes through a lot in this film and a lot of hard events come in front of him. Harry is unwillingly entered into the Triwizard Tournament and is 3 years underage to compete. Harry has no idea who entered him in so he has no choice but to actually compete in those three tasks with support from only Professor Alastor Moody. Harry has fall outs with his close friends Ron and Hermione in this one because they are annoyed at him for entering and especially for not telling them that he entered even though he didn't enter himself into it. He becomes the most hated person in school but he always tries to put on a brave face and to carry on with it. Rupert Grint is really good as Ron once again. He is hilarious and an idiot which is obviously part of Ron's personality. He falls out with Harry but they eventually make up after Harry completes the first task. We start to see the romantic side of things with the kids of Hogwarts because of the Yule Ball which does lead Ron to slight feelings for Hermoine and Harry for Ravenclaw seeker Cho Chang. Emma Watson proves once again that she is the best out of the three actors. She is the only one who can portray their character with real enthusiasm and the most realistically interesting. Hermione falls out with Harry as well as Harry's other friends do but when the Yule Ball comes along she goes with Harry's co-champion in the Triwizard Tournament, Durmstrang champion Victor Krum which makes Ron jealous as it makes Harry jealous of watching Cho dance with co-Hogwarts champion and friend Cedric Diggory. Michael Gambon is a good Dumbledore but isn't a brilliant one. He will never be better than the late Richard Harris. Dumbledore should have gone to either Ian McKellen or Christopher Lee instead because they are both far more talented. Ralph Fiennes was really good and scary as Voldemort (not going to say because spoiler). He portrayed this man with such fear. He wore such amazing make-up and the costumes he wore were like rags but made the character even more fearful than he already was.
Mike Newell's directing in The Goblet Of Fire was really good which sort of surprised me because the directing in the first three was pretty good. As far as I'm concerned, Newell would have been a good choice for directing Prisoner Of Azkaban then there would have been a joint directing: Chris Colombus for Philosopher's Stone and Chamber Of Secrets, Mike Newell for Prisoner Of Azkaban and Goblet Of Fire and David Yates for Order Of The Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince and both parts of the final one Deathly Hallows. The script was a tiny flawed but the main thing was that some of the flawed scenes such as when Harry went in the bath where he saw Moaning Myrtle again. I thought that was a bit of an inappropriate scene even though it did become effective with the egg revealing what the second task is.
The Goblet Of Fire is my favourite Harry Potter novel but my favourite Harry Potter film is Order Of The Phoenix. The Goblet Of Fire is the start of making the Harry Potter films more enjoyable for adults as well as kids because they are getting darker and darker every time one is released. The Goblet Of Fire is one of my favourite blockbusters of 2005 and is one of the best of 2005 in my honest opinion. The Goblet Of Fire is the one Harry Potter film that catches your imagination the most and you will see why when you watch or if you have already watched it.
