Balls of Fury (2007,  PG-13)
Balls of Fury
Not a huge comedy, but it's got tiny balls and hilarious one liners thrown all over it. :P Also bonus points for Maggie Q being so hooot!!, and the hilarious movie posters and adverts with all sorts of references to balls. Overall, a good comedy... with tiny balls. :D

Shoot 'Em Up (2007,  R)
Shoot 'Em Up
Very Tarantino-esque flick. But I can't make up my mind on whether they pulled it off successfully or not. Some parts they managed, but surely not the whole thing. It is very enjoyable nevertheless. Which I guess is a good thing even if it was really cheesy at times.

ps. Monica Bellucci is the hottest 44 year old around.

10,000 B.C. (2008,  PG-13)
10,000 B.C.
The movie was epic and beautiful in terms of the visual effects, rendered cg and and the scenery, but the first half of the movie was more like an epic failure. It improved somewhat later on but except for Camilla Belle and Steve Strait, some of the acting was really poor and most of the main characters in the film were horrible. Some looked really out of place and there were far too many cheesy scenes for my liking with some terrible dialogue. For instance, asking a trapped sabre tooth tiger not to eat himself before helping it free itself? Wtf? And predictably enough, the tiger comes back to help out later on in the film. Hilarious. And that "Old Mother" character was a joke.

For a movie of this magnitude, they could've atleast worked on assembling a better cast and get a bettter writer and perhaps make the script a bit more interesting rather than using a shit load of cliches.

Final words? Epic dissapointment. The trailer decieves you. I'm giving the stars for the cinematography and the epicness of the movie. Have I used the word epic too much? I think it's only appropriate though.

Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
Let me get this off first. I've never been a big fan of Iron Man. I dislike most comic book characters with funny looking costumes, which happens to be almost all of them aside from a couple like Batman for instance. But this film is highly enjoyable to watch. Infact I think this even managed to go as far as to actually make me an Iron Man fan.

I love movies where they manage to pick up a perfect cast. This is one of them. Robert Downey Jr., Gweyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard all do fantastic jobs with their roles. These guys really do the characters a great deal of justice. I mean surely Robert has to be the perfect match for Tony Stark's character.

Now let's see how the other comic book adaptations coming out this year fare.

The Incredible Hulk (2008,  PG-13)
The Incredible Hulk
Perhaps Edward Norton could turn around the Hulk's fortune like Christian Bale and Christoper Nolan did with Batman.

That was what I wrote before I went to see this at the cinema. After seeing it, I must say I'm impressed. The quality of everything has dramatically improved compared to the first one. It really was entertaining and that is all I expect from a blockbuster sometimes. Great acting too and being a big fan of Edward Norton, Liv Tyler and Tim Roth, I'm pretty happy with the cast as well. They've done a good job this time around even with the cg stuff though it could still improve, as always. The only thing missing was perhaps a bit of good old humour and there were a couple of noticeable flaws in the script and screenplay as well but I shouldn't be pushing it too far considering how average the last one was.

It's been a smashing year for superhero flicks so far. Let's see how the real big one fares. Can't wait to see Batman. I'm gonna predict that the new Hellboy is gonna kick some major ass as well.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) (2008,  PG-13)
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2)
The trailer was really sweet so I had to go to a theater to watch this and I think it's only fair you watch something like this at a theater. The film was good but not as good as I had expected though. I think Del Toro tried a little too much to be Hollywood friendly, which kind of resulted in a lot of cheesy and stupid scenes, some of which were quite funny and appropriate (getting drunk and singing scene for example) but others not nearly as effective. Otherwise, his wild imagination is put to good use, with some stunning creatures to gawk at. Specially loved the winged angel like creature which appears near the end. Splendid cinematography and special effects all around but storywise, it's quite disappointing. It could've been a lot better though with a bit of editing here and there I think.

So a lot of flaws and probably even a few plot holes but still I liked it coz it was enjoyable above all. The beginning was rather dull though and showing a horrible looking teenage Hellboy seemed unnecessary. And so was a lot of other things which I might or might not write about on here later.

It was a mistake on my part to watch this anticipating something as good as Pan's Labyrinth and I think I set my standards a bit too high.

The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Best superhero flick ever. There's just no competition. I just fucking loved watching this at the cinema. It surely is one of the best experiences I've had at a cinema.

Jack Nicholson may be a better actor but Heath pulls off the Joker's role better than anyone else had done before and the film is just brilliant. A masterpiece.

It more than deserves the hype.

( will probably add a couple more lines here later. )

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008,  PG-13)
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Almost the same storyline as the new Hellboy and you'd do well to watch that instead of this. Didn't like the casting at all, apart from Brendan Fraser to an extent. The guy who played Fraser's son actually looked like he was older than Fraser himself and it was kind of awkward. Michelle Yeoh (who's a fine actress) is pretty much miscast I'd say. Likewise Jet Li too is all but wasted with that poorly written script. As for Maria Bello, she may be a good actress but she did a terrible job replacing Rachel Weisz. Rachel is certainly missed but I'm glad she didn't take the role. This film really made everyone in it look like horrible actors and some of the acting actually is quite bad for real.

I think this could've done with some good special effects but even that is quite average.

Now I'm a huge fan of epic films but this certainly is a waste of time. Fuck you Rob Cohen. The previous two films in the series were way better than this half arsed attempt at making a film. It tried too hard to be funny but it's neither funny nor a good film.

Babylon A.D. (2008,  PG-13)
Babylon A.D.
Zzzz.

Seriously!. Apart from a couple of cool action scenes, this film is a massive failure. There's way too many plot holes and pretty much the majority of the film sucked. It was boring and made no sense much of the time. A total mess.

If I were to summarise this movie in a couple of sentences, I'd say it's basically Vin Diesel acting tough guy as he always does and the plot is almost the same as the story behind Children of Men put in a different way.

I was basically dragged to watch this at a screening and I knew it was gonna suck. Oh well, that's how it works sometimes. :\

Max Payne (2008,  PG-13)
Max Payne
Loved the first Max Payne game but the film turned out to be a bit boring at times, specially at the beginning. It improved somewhat later on but the plot twist was all too obvious and there wasn't as much action as I had hoped for. Disappointing in a way but it wasn't too bad.

Mark was a fantastic choice for the role. Mila Kunis and Chris O'Donnell were okay as well but Ludacris and Nelly Furtado can't act. Olga Kurylenko on the other hand is atleast easy on the eyes. She's hot in other words, which helps if you can't act.

Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans (2009,  R)
Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans
Love the whole look and feel of the Underworld series and this time even the special effects have improved quite a bit and it's a good thing coz these kind of films rely quite heavily on it.

This really turned out to be much better than I had actually expected. Even the casting wasn't bad at all with both Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy returning to deliver excellent performances and the newcomer Rhona Mitra did a great job as well.

Definitely want more of this. Perhaps a second prequel?

X-Men Origins - Wolverine (2009,  PG-13)
X-Men Origins - Wolverine
Went in with very low expectations and it proved to be a fun film to watch. It's not a great film or anything. Just typical, cliched, predictable etc but none of that bothered me much. It could've been much better with a better director and a writer I'd say.

Terminator Salvation (2009,  PG-13)
Terminator Salvation
It's okay but definitely nowhere near as good or memorable as T2. They needed to flesh out some of the characters a lot more and cut out the unrealistic crap. Guess I should learn not to raise my expectations too high every time a film as big as this comes out. But then again, what could you really expect from the guy who directed Charlie's Angels.

Still, the special effects were pretty great and it would probably satisfy most looking for a non stop action flick.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009,  PG-13)
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
If you're expecting Oscar worthy acting, great dialogue and all that, you won't find it here.

Instead if you're in a mood for some non stop action with giant robots, EXPLOSIONS!!!, Megan Fox's boobs in slow motion and a showcase of American military might, this doesn't dissapoint. Heck, they even manged to pull off a few decent jokes even though most were terrible.

That is more than what I expected. Yes there were plenty of scenes which made little sense whatsoever and some of it was downright annoying, like those twins autobots but overall, the film is pretty enjoyable if you ask me.
