Casablanca (1943, PG)
Ooooooooooh I dunno possibly the most fantastic movie ever made! In the history of the world ever! This has got to be my all time favourite movie. I really don't think anything can or will ever top it. The atmosphere is amazing, the chemistry between the actors is just mind blowing and the way the entire movie is made is just inspirational. Just to be able to escape into the raw emotion of it all! Extremely strong performances from both Bogart and Bergman, Bogart's performance especially for wrongfully losing out on an Academy Award to Paul Lukas (Watch On The Rhine). You see, for me this movie isn't just your not so average love story it's so much more! I mean the guy doesn't get the girl, so it isn't your stereotypical happy Hollywood ending in a time when there were no unconventional endings! |

Dark Victory (1939, Unrated)
This is probally what i call a 1940's chick flick. I watched it with low expectations and it actually really did suprise me. Thing is it's pretty good... bit dated now but you overlook that. Basically Bette Davis is really ill and you get emotionally attached to her. Oooh and Humphrey Bogart is in it briefly. |

The Enforcer (1951, Unrated)
A movie that plays very lightly on the idea of Murder Inc. Though it is one of Bogart's darker movies it just doesn't have the same edge as High Sierra or Dark Passage. Its good to see Bogart as a detective for once, but unfortunately his character is pretty non-existent. Though it is a fairly good detective it doesn't possess enough captivating force to make it stand out against the other similar movies of its time. It could be better in the sense that all the plot consists of is Bogart tracking down recent gang members to testify against a ring leader in court. Its also a shame that Bogart relies a lot on his supporting cast and the good direction, often involving long scenes not including Bogart. The plot is less detection and more media res and has the same atmospheric quality and character deterioration similar to The Asphalt Jungle. This movie is a good example of Noir and does well as an introduction to the context period. It has its suspenseful moments and unlike some other wise guy movies hints towards strong violence. Worth watching. |
