I'm no nationalist, but some of our films are truly awesome.

Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003, R)
Groundbreaking from its conception, this is perhaps the most misunderstood film in recent Brazilian cinematography. More than merely copying its direct approach to social issues, other Brazilian filmmakers should perhaps focus on mimicking its solid construction, its fresh originality, or its technical excellence. |

Encarnação do Demônio (Devil's Reincarnation) (Embodiment of Evil) (2008, Unrated)
For the first time in his entire career, 70 year-old Mojica has made a film with a proper budget and a professional crew. Raw as usual, cruel as ever and utterly entertaining, his cinematic style has not been domesticated, and old time fans will certainly enjoy the ride. Milhem Cortaz is absolutely marvelous as an antagonist who is as crazy as Coffin Joe himself. |

Madame Satã (2002, Unrated)
The visuals are stunning, but the film fails for something that is unfortunately becoming a tradition in Brazilian cinema: the lack of a consistent script. Too much responsibility is left on the actors' shoulders, as if they were the ones who were supposed to make the film work, and although the cast fights this battle with all they've got, I honestly don't know if that's fair. |
