I'm in the process of reading the book and i'm loving it as much as I loved the film. Christian Bale really was a talented actor at such a young age. We don't get to see Ben Stiller much but he is really funny in the parts that we do. John Malkovich has never been a favorite actor of mine. To be honest at times i've actually hated him but in this film I thought he was great. I do hope, which I think it will, that the book is as great as this.
Brilliant film. It's like a musical/visual orgasmic trip. Wonderful directing from Todd Haynes. The characters are just amazing. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers was brilliant. Perfect for the character as well. Loved Eddie Izzard's character as well. He really made me laugh. Christian Bale and Ewan McGregor were great as well. To compliment the whole film, the music was amazing. A must see film for anyone who loves Glam Rock and for everyone else that just loves an entertaining sexy film.
Really good film. Christian Bale is fantastic. I however, don't think i'm rating it fairly. I would like to read the book and then watch the film again before re-review it because i think there is more to this film than can be seen with one viewing.
I really don't understand this remake because the first one was never really that good to begin with. You'd think they would be able to improve on it but no. Sam Jackson really needs to stop doing crap films just for the sake of it. He didn't even give a decent performance like he usually does. Everything seemed forced more than anything else. Christian Bale only has a small role and not a massive amount of screen time but his character was just dull and irritating. The plot is slow moving and a lot of scenes are irrelevant. Not a film I would recommend. There are many more similar films like this one that do it so much better.
There are quite a few films just like this one. Films about a future world that is being controlled in some way. In this film the oppressors erradicate murder and crime by getting rid of feelings. Everything from rage and anger to joy and happiness. Christian Bale plays a high ranking officer type who doesn't take the medication one morning and discovers the thrill of feelings. He then joins the protestors in trying to stop the oppressors. The acting is great from all the actors and Christian Bale is as high class as he always is. The plot is strong and in this type of film this is definatly one of the better ones. Definatly a film worth seeing. A bit of a no brainer but sometimes those kinds of films are good to watch.
I think this film is the best example of showing just how dedicated some actors are to the work they do. Christian Bale didn't just perform this role, he lived it. Right down to staving himself to go from about 180 pounds down to 120. Not only does this show the lengths Bale will go to to become a character but it also shows the faith he had in the character and the film itself. If that isn't a sign of a very good film, I don't know what is. Bale plays Trevor Reznik, a troubled, anorexic, insomniac. Most of this film concentrated on the psyche of the character. He and the viewer begin to question his sanity as bizarre things start to happen. He starts seeing a strange man who know one else sees. As a result he begins to believe that everyone around him is conspiring against him. This part of the film is like a roller-coaster ride of confusion and emotion. It isn't made exactly clear what is actually happening, as we are put inside the head of Reznik, we feel the same as he does. Post-It notes appear on his fridge door with hangman games on them. Reznik fills out the letters each time leading him into another part of his forgotten memory, each time getting the word wrong, as another letter is filled in. These notes act as a countdown to the climax of the film which is extremely shocking. I love that because the director, Brad Anderson, put your mind inside a washing machine for the first two parts of the film, by the end your still feeling a little disorientated when he throws the reveal at you. I couldn't help but feel, wait a minute where did that come from. It's not until I had time later on to digest the film that I managed to see where everything linked together. The plot of the film is so seamless. Every little detail in the film is of extreme importance. I shouldn't have waited this long to see it. Once again Christian Bale proves his worth as a very talented and dedicated actor. He really embodied the character as i'm sure few other actors would be prepared to do. I highly recommend you check this out if you have not already, it shouldn't be missed.
Loved it. Has to be one of the best Batman films. All the others had a sort of comedy feel to them but this one is definatly more serious which makes it a whole lot more enjoyable. Christian Bale's performance is brilliant as always. Katie Holmes didn't impress me but I wasn't expecting her to. Cillian Murphy is a brilliant actor and in this film it is no different. This is a must see film for everyone. Even if you didn't enjoy the others they cannot be compared.
Wow. I was not expecting this at all. I thought it would be good at most. But it really was amazing. I loved the way it was structured a lot. In most cases something like that would be too confusing and really wouldn't add to the film much but more take away from it as you'd spend so much time trying to work out expactly what was going on and when it was meant to be happening. But for some reason it was what made this film extra special. Christopher Nolan should be proud of that achievement because it had the potential to be a disaster. The high quality acting from Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman is once again just brilliant. Not really much from Scarlett Johansson but when she was around I did enjoy watching her. I liked that it had a few really great comedy moments as well as being quite a sad film. I loved the scene where Bale pretends to mess up the trick in front of the guard but actually chains his foot to the floor. That really made me laugh out loud and again when I re-watched it. Michael Caine brought the whole film together nicely with his narration. The twist I have to admit caught me off guard and I really wasn't expecting that at all. I like how they used flashbacks to fill in parts as well to explain how it was done. Extremely clever film that I definatly waited too long to see. Don't make the same mistake.
Really excellent film that has been overlooked just a bit too much. It had releases in 2006 and 2007 and I'm not exactly sure if it won any awards but it sure did deserve them. Christian Bale is terrific as he always is. He's made quite a few extremely good films these past few years and this one definatly falls into that category. The supporting cast was great as well. I think it was great to see Steve Zahn do something serious for a change. This proves he's capable of doing proper films and not just daft comedies. Jeremy Davies in war films always works out, he was brilliant and shouldn't be overlooked when handing out praise for this film. Definatly a film that should not be missed. There were loads of really excellent films released in 2007 and this one is just another to add to that ever growing list.
Yes, i'm finally getting round to reviewing this film after seeing it for the first time about a month ago. Since that first viewing i've seen it three times in the cinema. The feeling i got when it started the first time round was one that I don't get many times a year but when it does happen you know it's because your watching something special. And this film really will be one that people will be talking about in centuries to come. I don't know quite where to start when writing about this film. I would probably find it incredibly hard to find anything wrong with it at all, and even if there is a minor problem with it, all the greatness covers it up completely.
From Batman Begins, it was made quite clear that Christian Bale was born to play Batman. I'm sure lots of actors could claim to be up to the task but i'm pretty certain that that wouldn't be the case. Bale as Batman, from the word go is iconic. Better than any before and although I can't say for certain, presumably better than any to follow. When it came to all the business with Heath Ledger's death, I couldn't help but feel bad for Bale as I knew it would be virtually impossible for him to have given a decent performance never a bad one. He's an actor that puts his heart and soul into everything he does and ever performance up until this point has just proved it right. His performance in the Dark Knight tops his Begins one. A lot stronger and a lot more kick ass. And because he was up against such amazing actors he really raised his game. I would love to say that he dominated the screen at every moment but sadly that can't really be the case when The Joker was on screen.
The first time Heath walks on screen all done up as The Joker it really is breath taking. I love that Nolan decided to understate the Joker's entrance, is was very subtle but very powerful. The tragic circumstances of Ledger's death meant that a whole lot extra publicity was brought to the film and Heath's performance. I couldn't help but feel slightly apprhensive about his performance as it would be a huge tragedy if it wasn't as great as some people made out simply because of his death. The huge relief I felt when it turned out to be one of the most powerful performances i've seen in a long time. Who knew that Ledger had all of that inside him. Yes, his performances in previous films had been very good but this was just beyond good. It was ground breaking. It also makes his death a whole lot more awful because of all those future performances the world is going to miss out on. The rumours surrounding Heath in terms of an Oscar nomination for this performance are completely justified and I have to say that if he doesn't win Best Actor I will have a fair few strong words for the board. They would have to be utterly blind not to see that Heath's performance is miles better than a lot of people who have previously won the award. But lets just hope for once they will see sense and give the award to the person who really deserves it.
I have to mention Maggie Gyllenhaal as well. I don't think the producers could have made a better decision than to replace Katie Holmes because she was the let down of Begins. The only weak link in the chain. Gyllenhaal is as amazing as you could hope for and more. She stands strong against Ledger and Bale which cannot have been easy considering the dominate the screen constantly. I was really upset at her final demise and only feel it will be a loss to the third film no matter how impressively executed the plot for her death was.
The stunts are as fast paced as you could ever hope for, the cinematography is brilliant, the direction is as excellent as you could expect from Chris Nolan and although he is yet to make a film that disappoints, this is probably the film that will be marked as his best and the one that made people sit up and take notice of him.
Finally, this film really is a masterpiece, but I guess you don't really need me to tell you that. It is all quite clearly obvious in all the five star reviews this film has. If you've not seen it alreay then I suggest you do yourself a huge favour and do it now.
