La Grande illusion (The Grand Illusion) (1937, Unrated)
Although the prison escape genre has escalated over the years, it's always nice to watch the innovators, especially one as talented as Jean Renoir. There is much in the film to appreciate, including the fine performances by the main cast. This one you definitely don't want to miss, and I recommend watching other films of the genre which followed it... |

The Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) (1954, Unrated)
A stunning, flawless, and brilliant picture with some of the greatest characters ever put on film. Akira Kurosawa was undoubtedly a master of his craft and in 'Seven Samurai' he puts it on display. This motion picture has paved the path for many films like it, but few have been able to reach the poetry and beauty this picture paints. No question, this is one film you must see before you die... |

Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows) (1959, Unrated)
Francois Truffaut's film 'The 400 Blows' is not only brilliant in its depiction of troubled youth, but also in how it examines the relationships parents have with their kids and why a child may act out for attention. The picture is full of memorable moments, one of the most significant being the final sequence. It's always an interesting thing to witness some of the films that changed the face of cinema, and with 'The 400 Blows' you get not only that but a masterpiece of French filmmaking. There should be absolutely nothing keeping you from seeing this movie. So what are you waiting for? Go... |

M (1931, Unrated)
Considered to be among the first serial killer films, 'M' is an amazing film that, after almost 80 years, is still one of the best you'll ever see. The style and technique are mesmerizing and the driving plot is still, unfortunately, applicable to today. Technically, it's a beautifully shot film, and emotionally, it is a very intense topic that is taboo by todays standards let alone in the early 1930s. All I can say is find a get hold of this film and watch it... |

Carnival of Souls (1962, Unrated)
I'm a sucker for low budget films. There's something beautiful about someone making due with what they have and delivering something more worthwhile than others do with a limitless budget. 'Carnival of Souls' fits into this category. Is it the best horror film ever made? No, but it has some effectively creepy moments that is not to be found anywhere in modern horror films. It's far from flawless, but the eerie atmosphere and being a staple of classic horror, I can't help but recommend this to you... |

The Third Man (1949, Unrated)
And film noir was never the same again. Highlighted by Orson Welles' monumental turn as Harry Lime and the unforgettable final act, it's no wonder why Carol Reed's 'The Third Man' is revered as the greatest among the genre. The cinematography creates such an atmosphere that draws you in and puts you directly in the streets of post-war Europe. I can't recommend this film enough... |
