Criterion Collection, List 2

To avoid the the fear of being repetitive, I will resist the urge to start my review by say "I am Spartacus", because that just wouldn't be classy. After watching all of Stanley Kubrick's films over the last few years, 'Spartacus' was amongst the last I watched, and for that I reason I think it was out shined by his later works. After having said that, this film also outshines countless other of the same generation. The combination of Kirk Douglas/Stanley Kubrick is sure to please, and I still think they did better work together in 'Paths of Glory'. If you're in the mood for an epic tale told by one of the greatest American film makers, you'll want to see this...

As many have stated before, for me to try and judge or critique this work would just be a repetition of what countless others have already said. Many could articulate their emotions toward this film better than myself, but that doesn't mean my affection towards this film is lessened. This is an essential film to those trying to educate themselves on film history, which is apparent from the beautifully shot opening sequence. All I can think to say is to watch the film yourself, rewind, and watch it again. Fellini is one of the masters...

Thoroughly entertaining and one of Godard's best. The characters are unforgettable and quirky, while Godard let's his unique story unfold. The dance is undoubtedly the most memorable scene, but the film as a whole is near perfect. The final act was particularly enthralling. Definitely recommended for anyone investigating French New Wave or classic films in general...

If I was hard pressed to tell you my favorite Akira Kurosawa picture, I'm not sure I could do it, but 'Throne of Blood' would be one of the films high on my list. I'll be the first to admit that Shakespeare can be rather difficult to be entertained by, but Kurosawa is one of the few that is able to interpret his works and having it be as meaningful and engaging as is was meant to be. 'Throne of Blood' is available through Criterion Collection (as are most Kurosawa pictures), which has a terrific transfer of the film and great box art as well.
