Zodiac (2007, R)
ZODIAC !! Being a great fan of Fincher movies, and also true crime stories, I really tuned into and thoroughly enjoyed Zodiac. Having seen so many thriller/horror flicks with obviously 'bad taste'-type slayings and serial murder, one gets a bit desensitized to seeing it depicted. However, when watching this film, with the realisation in the back of your mind that this is a true story, the grisly nature of the serial murders and the complete lack of remorse by the Zodiac killer is terrifying. The side plot showing the obsession of the cartoonist in solving this mystery that no-one else can solve is a great example of how unusual circumstances can draw a family apart. The main characters are brilliantly played, and there is a distinct 'aura' of an event lost in recent history. Brings to life the late 60's & 70's with its lighting, set, and wardrobe! Particularly enjoyed the performance of Robert Downey Jnr., whom I have not been a big fan of previously. Mark Ruffalo does a very realistic enactment of the detective who tried to solve the mystery. |
