Babel (2006, R)
Excellent ambitious multi-narrative drama which a gunshot in Africa has consequent repercussions in Mexico, the United States and Japan. I like two different individual stories are a wound American tourist who got shot in a bus by one of Moroccan brothers; and a deaf mute Tokyo teenager who struggles with an inattentive father, an inquisitive cop and a voracious sexual awakening. An unknown Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi does an impressive performance by playing as a deaf-mute teenager where I could see her sign languages - I understood some, but very different from my own, because I'm a supporter of the deaf culture. |

MVP: Most Valuable Primate (2000, PG)
This family movie with a chimpanzee is so funny and surprised to see a deaf girl appear to use her sign languages who befriends a chimp to communicate each other. But sometimes it looks ridiculous with lots of mistake in the scenes between a girl and chimp while they are acting. In the ice-hockey game that gives me good memory since one of my best and favourite family movie, The Mighty Ducks. |

Dead Silence (1997, R)
This gripping and exciting thriller turns on a clever premise; a trio of violent psychopaths hold a busload of deaf-mute students hostage in a standoff with the police. The duel between the seasoned hostage negotiator (James Garner) and the hostage takers is superbly crafted. And I like Marlee Matlin's character as a confident teacher of the deaf who's trying to protect and plan to escape with her deaf students away from the psychopaths. The movie is well acted, and the on location photography is acceptable. |

Breaking Through (After the Silence) (1996, Unrated)
What a masterpiece and emotional TV movie and the best deaf cultures film in the history I ever watched. Kellie Martin's performance is masterful remembering she cannot speak, and her adoption of the sign language is also brilliant. And JoBeth Williams is strong as the social worker, trying against the odds to rescue Kellie, and the supporting cast are all good. Highly recommended! |

The River Wild (1994, PG-13)
I started to like Meryl Streep in this adventure-thriler film because she's fantastic for the American deaf culture by using American sign language in her character. And she successfully invades Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone territory when her family is terrorized by a psychotic killer while on a white-water rafting vacation. |

Bridge to Silence (1989, Unrated)
Wonderful performances by a talented cast, including Marlee Matlin in her first speaking role, cannot quite overcome a melodramatic story in which a deaf woman nearly loses custody of her daughter to the mother who never understand her. I always regards the deaf culture for the rights to communicate with hearing people to give great friendships and relationships that can make you understand positively. |
