Cloverfield (2008, PG-13)
WOW! This film is brilliant! What can I say believe the hype. This is such an engaging film you won't be able to take your eyes off the screen for a second. This is a mix of action, drama, disaster, and sci-fi all rolled into one and even with a touch of romance to. It was much better than I expected it to be given all the hype around it. The film is viewed through the playback of a camcorder after an event in New York, Kinda Blair Witch like but better. The first person feel of it really brings you into the action, panic and confusion as the events unfold. This is set to be a cult classic! If you haven't seen it yet put it to the top of your to watch/rental list! It feels like a roller-coaster ride you don't want to end! |

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008, PG-13)
An enjoyable film to add to the series and very similar to the 2nd but set in China basically. It has good special effects, stunts etc but it does miss Rachel Wiesz in her role. Maria Bello is a fine actress but not sure she is suited to the comic moments as much, good attempt at the English accent though lol. Overall more of the same from the last one but nothing we haven't seen in the first two. |

Rambo (Rambo IV) (2008, R)
This is a very good enjoyable , but simple film, even for a action film the plot couldn't be more straight forward. Yes this is far more violent, bloody and gory than the previous three. Done very realistically as well similar to the scenes on the beach in saving private ryan. A brutal bloody film and entertaining as a modern day action film. Despite his years Stallone's character is believable in this and he doesn't over do any stunts, action unlike some of the other Rambo films. Well worth seeing if you have seen the others or not. |

April Fool's Day (2008, R)
A so-so remake of the cult classic, although this time it is totally different characters and story but with the same idea. So if you have seen the original, if not then why?, you already have a good idea of how it will turn out. This is one of the main problems as it loses any sense of tension of the first film with its setting on a remote island. Despite the low budget TV movie feel, it was still watchable with a young trendy cast. Don't rush to see it but it's not that bad. |

The Eye (2008, PG-13)
I have to say I have not seen any of the Asian originals of The Eye....yet. So I can't really compare it to that as yet. It seemed to have mixed reviews when it came out, but on here it seems to have got mainly good reviews. |

The Cottage (2008, Unrated)
This is a very good comedy horror in the vein of Shaun of the Dead, Severance. Funny, gory in places with a good sense of British humour about it too. If you liked the other films mentioned here this is worth checking out, good to see Andy Serkis in an unusual role and nice to see Jennifer Ellison. Even the DVD animated menus are refreshingly good! |

One Missed Call (2008, PG-13)
There seems to be an awful lot of Asian horror remakes over the last few years, or should that be a lot of awful remakes?! Personally I like the Ring, well the first at least and the first Grudge but the rest get very bad reviews so far. I have to admit I need to see many of the Asian originals to truly compare them still. Not heard much about this previously but for a low budget film I found it quite enjoyable. A bit cheesey and predicatable but the effects were good and there are some very creepy moments and images. Slows a tad in the second half but if you liked The Ring or the Final Destination films, give this a whirl. |

Never Back Down (2008, PG-13)
Yes this does kinda add up to The Karate Kid for the Youtube generation, with an MTV makeover. This time using MMA basically like UFC, cage fighting using any fighting style. Despite the obvious plot and seeing this type of film more than a few times, this is pretty decent. It has a strong cast and the fight scenes are well shot. There is an extra on the DVD to get each of the fights in the film broken down into how they were filmed etc which is pretty good...all this and the beautiful Amber Heard! |

Hancock (2008, PG-13)
A cool blockbuster film with a good cast and great SFX but it just doesn't land a knockout punch for me. It all starts well enough with a funny take on of all the superhero films with a guy called Hancock who causes destruction whereever he goes and becomes hated for it. There are some great action scenes and very good SFX but the final third of the film has a twist and takes the film in a totally different direction to the rest of the film. Well worth seeing though! |

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008, PG-13)
I have finally seen it and have mixed feelings. It just doesn't have some of the old Indy magic. The story is even more far fetched than usual and maybe it's a bit overloaded with CGI as well. Cate Blanchett's character is a bit OTT almost to the point of feeling like a comic book character. Overall still an entertaining film but not up there with the first three. |

Iron Man (2008, PG-13)
Another comic based superhero action movie, seems to be an awful lot of them lately. This one definitely sits up there with some of the best of them so far! I would have liked a few more action scenes once he has created the suit to really show it off. However the action scenes you do get are great and with very good SFX. This is just a fun, enjoyable, cool action film well worth seeing. |

The Dark Knight (2008, PG-13)
A very good film with an awful lot of hype, and just about lives up to it. This is how we want to see Batman, a much darker version than most of the comical offerings from years ago. This is intense crime/action/drama at it's best with some neat twists, great action scenes and wonderful acting talent on show. It's a little long but you barely notice as it progresses at a great pace with lots of great plot lines. See it as soon as you can! |

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) (2008, PG-13)
A very good film with some great scenes, characters in it. The market scene with so much going on and so many different creatures to admire is really good. Despite the much bigger budget, clearly seen in the SFX alone, I'm not sure this has the same impact as the first which was more of a sleeper hit. Still it is a feast for the eyes, it has some cool fight scenes and plenty of humour to. More of the same from the first really. |

The Bank Job (2008, R)
A very good English heist/crime thriller with a very good cast of mainly British actors on show. A role that seems to fit Jason Statham like a glove, playing a cockney East London gangster. He has the chance to pull one last big Bank Job but that is where all his troubles begin. This is a very good entertaining film, that is slick, stylish and a tad raunchy to. It stays very truthful to the 70's period in all manner of ways, which is good to see. This isn't just a good heist film though as the story involves all sorts of double crosses, making it a very good crime thriller to. Make sure you see it. |
|
| 22 |
Street Kings (2008, R)
A very good film with a strong cast. An interesting story involving shady goings on, bad cops, not so good cops. It is very entertaining and a good all round film. A more action packed film, but similar in some ways to the likes of Departed. Even Hugh Laurie makes an appearance as does the rapper The Game. Go see it! |
|
| 23 |
Shutter (2008, PG-13)
A pretty decent effort of a remake of the original Thai film. It compares well and the scenes are very similar, but the Thai version was more jumpy and creepy for me. Though that could be partly put down to knowing what was coming. The imagery of the ghost girl is no way as scary as the Grudge, Ring remakes. Enjoyable film well made and featuring a recognizable cast including the beautiful Rachael Taylor from Transformers. |
|
| 24 |
The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008, PG-13)
This straight to DVD prequel was never going to WOW anyone, but for the low budget it's ok. Can't say I recognize anyone in it and the SFX are far from stunning. However I thought it was fairly good, it has some good fight scenes and plenty of humour to. If you enjoyed the Mummy, Scorpion King films or any with a group setting off on a quest you will probably like this. |
|
| 25 |
Lost Boys 2: The Tribe (2008, Unrated)
You wait 21 years for a sequel to a cult classic and this is all we get? It's very poor saved at times only by Corey Feldman returning in his original role and not looking much older, maybe he is a vampire to? It's a bit like a not so good take on of Buffy, just with more gore and nudity, essential for straight to DVD horrors. Some parts were ok but the overall film just makes you think what a missed opportunity. Watch once if you curious. |

WALL-E (2008, G)
A brilliant film in so many ways!! It is so simple with barely any dialogue, but it doesn't need it you can tell what is going on by the actions and expressions can say more than a thousands words with a film like this. It's cute, funny and smart and carries a message about the environment. Technically the level of detail in the animation is amazing and set new standards for all animations. There are slight influences from Short circuit in the design of Wall-e and 2001: A Space Odyssey as well later in the film. Do not miss this film!! |

Eden Lake (2008, R)
An original film described by some as "hoodie horror" as a young middle class couple become terrorised by a pack of feral youths on a camping weekend. What is scary is that some of the behaviour of the teens in this isn't too far away from what is really happening in society today. A simple confrontation escalates into ever growing violence until it becomes a case of just trying to survive and escape to safety. There is some social commentary raised in the film about why the kids are this way and parents taking responsibility, but this isn't in your face it's very subtle. Overall it makes for an interesting different kind of horror film. |

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008, R) |

Vipers (2008, R)
A typical low budget B movie horror straight to DVD release. So corny and bad it actually becomes more of a comedy. Saying that the CGI wasn't half as bad as I have seen on other films. It also has a few familiar faces including Tara Reid. Good if you like low budget trashy horrors otherwise you'll want to avoid it. |
|
| 33 |
Wanted (2008, R)
A very enjoyable action film with some great SFX and a brill car chase. You really need to switch your brain off though as it is all very unbelievable. Some might see it as a Matrix wannabe, no bad thing, but it's not up to those levels. Still a good film and worth watching if you like cool, action films. |
|
| 34 |
Doomsday (2008, R)
A very good, violent, gory action film with an eclectic mix of ideas from 28 weeks later, Mad Max and the Escape from NY/L.A. films. The plot is a kinda mix of those three films as well. Not original by any means but it has plenty of action all right and some bloody battles along the way. From the same director as the Descent and Dog Soldiers! If you like any of the films mentioned you'll enjoy this. |
|
| 35 |
Deception (2008, R)
An very good cast, a good idea but a poor-ish execution only make this an ok thriller. I had high hopes for a lot more but the title alone really gives any idea of a twist away right from the start which was annoying. Hugh Jackman was very good in his role I thought and there are some sexy appearances from Natasha Henstridge (Species, Ghost of Mars) and Maggie Q (Die Hard 4). However it is all too straight forward to work out if you have seen any decent thriller before. Ok for a look but nothing special, you might prefer Derailed instead. |

| 36 |
Donkey Punch (2008, R)
Severely underrated low budget English horror/thriller! Taking a very modern turn on the horror theme and tackling some very taboo ideas as a group of youngsters decide to live it up on holiday losing all their inhibitions as they drink, take drugs and have sex. During which a sex myth tried out leads to one of them dying. As the others battle their own conscience and morals as well as each other to get out of the mess they are in, only ending up in more extreme violence. A good idea for a film that dares to be different. Some may be put off by the sex scene which borders on porn and by the violence. However it does raise some good issues to make a graphic film. Another good entry in recent English horror films. The DVD has quite a few interviews with the cast, director both after and during the making of. Along with some deleted scenes and commentaries. |

Slumdog Millionaire (2008, R)
Not quite the sugar coated feel good film I was expecting. It's quite dramatic and gritty in places but I think that makes the harshness of the situations the characters find themselves in and what they go though in their life time more realistic. This makes the film better overall. Very well directed, a great story some great child actors and a fine soundtrack produce a film everyone will enjoy and be drawn into! Jai ho!!! |

Biohazard: Degeneration (Resident Evil: Degeneration) (2008, Unrated)
A very good CGI animated film with a great level of detail, really makes it realistic as possible. They even used motion capture for the characters in the film for greater realism. At last a Resident Evil film that does tie in with the games! Bringing Claire Redfield and Leon S.Kennedy back together for more Zombie mayhem. Set 7 years after the Resident Evil 2 game where Racoon City was nuked and in the time line of the games after Resi Evil 4 and before 5. The story plot is simple but this is really like watching a playback of playing the game. If your a Resident Evil fan you will love this. The DVD also has tons of extras, making of, Leon interview, Resident Evil 5 footage plenty to entertain you. |

Appaloosa (2008, R)
A very well assembled cast in a high quality produced western, which stars and is directed by Ed Harris. The only real problem I kept waiting for all hell to break loose and the pace to be upped a few gears and unfortunately it never really happens. If you don't mind a slower paced western you will enjoy it, if you are after more action I recommend the remake of 3:10 to Yuma. |
|
| 41 |
Prom Night (2008, PG-13)
Firstly no way is this a remake of the original 1980 slasher. They are both called Prom Night and that is it, the stories are totally different! The other problem is this is classed as a horror but only a PG-13?! Pretty straight forward slasher stuff, not scary or gory but done on a big budget. Watch the 80's one it was only just slightly better! |

The Midnight Meat Train (2008, R)
A pretty decent horror film based on the short story by Clive Barker, which is a bit Stephen King like. It's very bloody and gruesome but the cgi effects make it less shocking. Overall a very simple idea for a film well executed but the cgi effects are over done and the story is a bit too straight forward most of the time. |

Bangkok Dangerous (2008, R) |

Body of Lies (2008, R)
A very good film with solid performances from the lead actors. There have been a few films that deal with the issue of terrorists in the middle east recently. Along with The Kingdom this is the one of the best. It has a good balance of action and drama, without any long drawn out sequences or an over complicated plot. It delivers the message it is getting across in a very good way. |

Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) (2008, R)
A great horror drama about a girl vampire who befriends a bullied boy in Sweden, A great foreign film done on a small budget that has some great cinematography I have to add. It can be a bit slow, it's more drama than horror action, but this makes certain scenes have more of an impact. One of the better vampire films around but the emphasis is on the relationship between the two children. Check it out! |
|
| 51 |
Quantum of Solace (2008, PG-13)
A very good action film continuing right on from Casino Royale. Plenty of action, chases and explosions. Has a certain Bourne Trilogy feel to a lot of the stunts and fights. The Bond films now are more gritty, raw without the tongue in cheek humour of the past films. One for all out action entertainment but not the best story for a Bond film. |
|

The Ruins (2008, R) |

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008, PG-13)
A potentially great story about alien contact was really let down by the plot more than anything. I have seen the original and while that would be regarded as well ahead of it's time made in 1951 this will shortly be forgotten. This has the big budget modern effects otherwise the main difference of this and the original is the reason for the alien contact. The original made after WW2 was all about living in peace or risk destruction for our violent actions. This is all about the environment if we can't change our ways we risk killing the earth and ourselves. Oh and John Cleese is always worthy of more than a few minutes cameo?! |
|
| 54 |
Lakeview Terrace (2008, PG-13)
A good thriller about a black racist cop who happens to be the neighbour from hell for a young inter-racial couple. It's an enjoyable film and the tension between the two lead characters is good as the incidents between them escalate throughout the film. It reaches a predictable conclusion in a bit of a rush towards the end, but it's still a worthy watch. |
|
| 55 |
The Spirit (2008, PG-13)
A pretty decent comic book romp in the same graphic style as Sin City. Unfortunately any similarities end there, despite a strong cast this fails to pack a punch. I didn't know anything about the comic book and you have to wait halfway through the film to get any idea of the characters background. I felt it could have been better. Maybe one more for fans of Frank Miller stories or comic books. Silly over the top fun action but nothing special. |
|
| 56 |
Starship Troopers: Marauder (2008, Unrated)
A fairly decent 3rd installment better than the 2nd and not as good as the first. It has some of the cast of the original back and I think it was produced by Paul Verhoeven who directed the first. So you have the same over the top humour ads to sign up to the federation, lots of bugs, some gore, a group nude scene and big guns much like the first. Watch it if it's on TV and nothing else is on. |
|
| 57 |
Saw V (2008, R)
I thought this was better than Saw 4 and one of the better ones overall. The fourth was a bit confusing with the timeline overlapping much of the third film, even two of the actors looked similar! This reveals even more going right back, although very briefly, from the first and through all the previous films to shed a bit more light on what happened and why. You really need to have seen the other films in order and maybe refresh your memory a bit before hand by watching the last one again before this. Not quite as grusome and gory overall as the previous films but still plenty for gore fans. Hope it isn't dragged out too much longer though! |
|
| 58 |
Sex Drive (2008, R)
Yes it's an in your face rude, crude teen sex comedy with a lot of nudity. If you're easy offended then you will be. It's pretty funny in places and just silly in others. However it comes across as a fun film that the cast enjoyed making. The unrated version of the film is quite odd to, as the director will tell you! Not quite up there with American Pie, Euro Trip etc but it should still cause quite a few laughs. That sure is an awesome car to! |
|
| 59 |
New Town Killers (2008, Unrated)
A pretty decent low budget Scottish film. The idea is similar to Hard target, but minus the martial arts and this time given an urban setting. Two young rich men hunt down the lower classes desperate for money in a game of hide and seek. The plot can be a bit odd at times but it's a entertaining watch. |

Rogue (Rogue Crocodile) (2008, R)
Probably the best film of its type. I have seen a few films that were based around avoiding a huge Croc in perilous circumstances. Some had really bad effects like Crocodile, or just plain cheesey like Lake Placid 2, Blood Surf. This was more like another film called Black water. I found this more interesting though and the Crocodile looks more believable. Worth checking out. |
