When Harry Met Sally (1989, R)
probably the best romantic comedy ever made. the dialogue encompasses every detail of the nuances of men and women in a relationship, and each of those nuances was effectively fused into the relationship of the main characters. witty and clever, each of the actors played into the story perfectly. a wonderful movie. |

Ran (1985, R)
what a fantastic movie. this film is great, very similar in a lot of ways to kagemusha but much better. i thought about giving this film 5 stars but there is a loose end that wasnt tied up when the movie was over, and 5 star movies tie up their loose ends. but regardless, this is an epic film. tatsuya nakadai does an absolute wonderful job and each scene was shot beautifully. i cant believe that in akira kurosawa we had one man that could make so many incredible films. this is one of the best films i have ever seen and i can name 5 of his i liked better. there are plenty of characters in this film to root for and plenty of villians as well, great war film from fuedal japan. |

The Shining (1980, R)
im not sure that the word "epic" should ever be used to describe a horror film, but if it was this would be the film to apply it to. easily one of the smartest and scariest films ever made despite that fact that King, who authored the source material, didnt like the film. the cinematography was outstanding, with epic landscapes and larger than life shots of the hotel and the production of some of the most memorable and iconic images ever captured in a movie. nicholson puts in one of his best performances and the slow pacing gives off a haunting feel. the only thing keeping this film from perfection in my mind was the reality of how warped the story really was. despite the films genius and effectiveness, as a family man i had a hard time enjoying a film about a good dad that tries to murder his family after a bout with insanity. despite this, the shining is possibly the greatest horror film ever made. |

Ghost Busters (Ghostbusters) (1984, PG)
total classic, bill murray is hilarious in this original and fun movie. it was executed well and begged for a sequel. the nuances of the script were suprisingly well thought out and there was a seriousness fused into such a story that was so out there that could have been risky but worked very well. a perfect 80's adventure comedy. |
