spielberg master of suspence, a great action film here actually made for tv, a truck storks car driver dennis weaver, for 90 mins and thats it he gets mad and fights back, its simple but its a well paced thriller, a great chase film
debut film from starwars creator, george lucas, in a future world the minds of men are controlled, and monitored, robert duvall, stars as thx a subject living in a underground world where he lives his day conducting experiments, while being monitored and in a sence a prisoner, when he and a woman start to see each other, which is forbidden, the authorities try to put a stop and terminate him, its here that he tries to escape, a great chase begins, this film is bleak, a grimm portrait of the future and hard to imagine coming from lucas after seeing the lightness of starwars, and american graffiti, it also shows his potential if he carried on directing after starwars, he did over 20 years later, with the new trilogi, duvall shows his potential, and a great sci fi at a low budget., also based on his own student film. try check that out.
kevin smith debut, and a low budget film making class for all film makers, shot at conveniance store where he was working at time, and in gainy black and white, we see the life of 2 slackers in 24 hours, smith with his script perfectly captures a friendship with the two guys, in a witty and honest looki, this film is hilarious, from small observations of annoying customers to sexuall references, its spot on, its budget ads to setting, and great pacing cramming in running time with all manner of things, the best being any starwars references, which would become a smith trademark, and of course jay and silent bob were born, love them or hate them they were here to stay. this was a very promising start to a great career for smith, following up with exelent and possibly better chasing amy, and of course clerks sequel clerks 2, although not classic, certainly a good sequel, so check out clerks, it may not look great, smith is no david fincher, but a great script makes this a winner
debut from robert rodriguez( sin city from dusk til dawn) and the first in his mariachi films( followed by desperado and once upon a time in mexico, shot in spanish and a reported 7000 dollers, this is a great blend of action and comic moments, a mariachi player gets mixed up for a assassin when he arrives in town, so local thugs decide to terminate him, and a pursuit of the man begins while he also falls in love with a local woman. a great example of what can be acomplished with a minimum budget, the tricks that rodriguez uses to make his budget bigger are great, he was a one crew team and did everything, a great example for all you film school wannabee film makers out there, andalthough looks cheap doesent act it, a great tip watch his audio commetery on the dvd, a great do it your self film hand book, tells you everything you wanna know about becoming a filmmaker and low budgets, a great debut from rodriguez
superb debut from tarentino and in my eyes better than pulp fiction, tighter and slickly directed, there similer in style and speeches, but this does it more for me
debut from danny boyle(trainspotting) and his firt of 3 with ewan mcgregor, 3 flatmates get a new lodger, but he dies the 1st night, leaving a suitcase of mon ey behind, there dilema, what do they do, they decide to hide thed body, and keep money, big mistake, great film depicting friendship going wrong due to greed, and having to keep a secret, a great thriller, black comedy, and a very good early performance from mcgregor, and christopher echlestone.
classic cult film here and one of the best horror movies with some great horror moments and indeed comedy, from our hero ash, played by bruce campbell, d.i.y filmmaking from sam raimi in his debut film,
everyone from spaced makes a film, and keep there warm funy brit humour, a wining formula, paying homage to romero and his dead films, not taking piss out of remake of dawn of the dead, as some people i, know have pointed out, in pegg and frost a great double act, scary and funny, always a winning combination, and the level is right here, its a brilliant film anyway, but being a fan of there sitcom spaced, which also involved director edgar wright, its so mucch more entertaining, sometimes feels like a full lenth episode, keeping many elements that made that show great.
a breath of fresh air when i saw this in cinema in 1998, brilliant debut from guy richie, about east end gangsters, and guys tring to make a quick buck, nick moran and jason straithern star as guys who get conned in a card game, who then go on to, take on a job, they overhere, gangsters talking about, in flat next door, and this is where irt all takes off, a great complicated plot follows, charactors intrduced, double crosses, and many deaths, a great watch, not knowing, whats going to happen, with all stories we are introduced to all tying up to the end outcome, a great charactor from vinnie jones, ex fooyballer in the u.k, who went on to many tough guy roles, jason straithern who went on to great things, and of curse guy richie, who made the wonderful snatch 2 years later, with straithern and v jones, although i really like snatch, maybe better than this, this is where he homed his skills, and the language in this film is stunning, cockney at its best, although im guessing some cockneys may disagree, great music too, a true british classic.
