director 12: scorsese films
scorsese is one of these directors that youre supposed to love because everyone talks about how good he is, and you want to react against that for some reason, and then you look at the films he has made and realize that this is one of those times that everyone is right and you should love him because most of his films are amazing. here are my favorites in order.

The Departed (2006, R)
best scorcese film ever. unbelievable. youre enthraled through the entire story. dicaprio is already one of my favorites, but this is one of his best performances, he was brillliant. damons performance is overlooked and the end is shocking and suprising, even disturbing really. i havent stopped thinking about this film since i watched it, nearly perfect. |

Taxi Driver (1976, R)
what an absolute classic film in every way. deniro gives probably the best performance of his legendary career in this gritty tale of a young guy confused by the world he finds himself in. cybill shepherd was delightful and beautiful in her role and the other actors delivered well. the story shifts in odd ways leaving the end totally up in the air, and when the end of the film arrives it really delivers in a bloody and shocking climax. deniro's character is not alltogether likeable, but its realistic and understandable. shepherds character summed up the film well when she said to deniro, "Ive never met anyone quite like you." what a brilliant film, among the best ever made. |

Raging Bull (1980, R)
this is a great movie. widely considered one of the top sports films of all time, it lives up to its reputation. deniro deserved his oscar as his performance was brilliant and joe pesci gave possibly the best performance of his career. this is one of my favorite sports films, but it did suffer from a few problems. for much of the film the story didnt feel like it was going anywhere. it was telling a story but you arent to sure why, so when the climax hit i was left wondering if that was really the climax or not. this is why as a boxing movie cinderella man is superior, you feel the point from the start of the film. it is still brilliant however, and this film is a great study on human anger, jelousy, and violence. it is a great film on how a person can let life get away from them even in success. |

The Color of Money (1986, R)
this is an excellent film. the story was very interesting and its easy to invest in the characters. this semi-sequel wasnt quite as good as the hustler, but it did flow a little better. newmans performance was better in the original, but he was very good in this one and deserved his oscar. cruise was asked to play a character that annoys a bit too much, but the fact that he annoyed me means he played the character well. over all a great future classic. |

Casino (1995, R)
ive had a wierd relationship with this film. the first few times i saw it i loved it. by the fourth or fifth time i grew tired of it and it fell a bit in my consciousness, now im back to seeing the brilliance of this film with a whole new appreciation. pesci was just as good here as he was in goodfellas or raging bull, stone was a pleasant suprise, and i feel like this film might be even more gritty than goodfellas is. classic gangster film and more reason to love scorsese. |

Boxcar Bertha (1972, R)
one of scorses's first films, this underrated "B" movie is the epitomy of exploitive nonsense, but at the same time carries that out in such a unique and entertaining way. the film has its absurd moments where things happen with no explanation, but at the end of the film it has enough character to be considered very good for what it was. the end of the film specifically gives us a strong indicator of what scorsese would become as a filmmaker. |

Mean Streets (1973, R)
considered the first great film by scorsese, i love scoesese and i really dont care for this film. as unexplained, unorganized, unimportant, and lifeless as a film can be. this film is juvenille and plain, unlike scorsese's later work. it deserves some score because of its potential and the strength of its performances, but not worth while. |
