1
North by Northwest (1959,  Unrated)
North by Northwest
really a masterpiece. incredible movie. easily hitchcocks best and one of the best films of all time. the airplane crop dusting scene was shot well, and you really felt like cary grants character was an average guy who became a brilliant spy on a whim just to stay alive. similar in many ways to another hitchcock film called saboteur, but this one was much better.
2
The Lady Vanishes (1938,  Unrated)
The Lady Vanishes
easily one of hitchcocks best films, this is also one of the greatest films ever made. incredible photography, a perfectly crafted and haunting script, a brilliantly chosen cast, and a well thought out plot. there were no holes and the entire film was perfectly executed. to be honest, i was nervous the first 30 minutes, and then the last hour was one of the most mind blowing and engaging hours of film that i have ever seen. a perfect masterpiece.
3
Dial M for Murder (1954,  PG)
Dial M for Murder
this is a sensational film. it is incredibly simplistic in its art direction and sets as many of hitchcocks great films are, but the script was very complex and well thought out. this is the sort of film that could have slipped up and had too many holes to recover from, but i could find none. very detailed and smart and intricately woven. the only problem i could find is that there really arent any characters one could root for in this film. all parties are guilty, its just the less guilty that win in the end. one of hitchcocks best.
4
The Birds (1963,  PG-13)
The Birds
i really liked this movie a lot. this is a genuine classic with real suspense. the course of events that led ms. daniels to bodega bay was weakly built and the lack of explination of the bird attacks were weak points for me, but this was one of hitchcocks more enjoyable films. very good stuff.
5
Rear Window (1954,  PG)
Rear Window
one of the best of hitchcockcs films. very slow film because this is a full length movie based on a short story, so it drags a little, but the story is very interesting and its told well. james stewart was great as always and the whole film youre really left wondering if the salesman across the courtyard commited the murder or not.
6
Psycho (1960,  R)
Psycho
considered one of the great horror films in cinematic history, this film breaks much of the mold for its time. anthony perkins was haunting and janet leigh gives us the most iconic scene in the history of horror, or showers for that matter.
7
The 39 Steps (1935,  PG)
The 39 Steps
featuring one of the great macguffin's of hitchcocks career, the 39 steps is a great 1930's thriller. aside from the silliness of the all too simple getaways of the main character, the film holds in suspense as we await the identity of the 39 steps. a classic.
8
Torn Curtain (1966,  PG)
Torn Curtain
an underrated hitchcock classic. newman was solid as always and the story was interesting. because of the length of the film it loses a bit of steam at one point, but then it picks back up and ends well. overall a great film.
9
Shadow of a Doubt (1943,  PG)
Shadow of a Doubt
really good flick. one of hitchcocks better endings. the story was compelling and it moved along well.
10
Notorious (1946,  Unrated)
Notorious
this is a hitchcock classic. carey grant was very good and the story was simple but interesting. the film stayed within its predictable boundries but was interesting until the last few minutes which left me a bit wanting. overall this is a very good movie.
11
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934,  Unrated)
The Man Who Knew Too Much
a very short but very good early film from hitchcock. lorre is excellent as always and the film succeeds at every turn after a strange 15 minute opening sequence. solid thriller.
12
Rope (1948,  PG)
Rope
this film was compelling and interesting in every way. the philosophy and concepts were interesting and james stewart did a great job as usual. however, most of the other actors did an average job and the last 5 minutes were a little weak. this film should have ended better. the entire film toof place in one apartment and with such a limited set hitchcock did get some great shots.
13
Vertigo (1958,  PG)
Vertigo
for my cinephile tastes, this film is a rarity. i know im supposed to love this film, and hitchcock is one of my favorite directors, but i just dont see it. actually, the majority of the film is essentially amazing, but the end trails off aimlessly and loses focus. still a great film, but for me hitchcock has made much better films.
14
Saboteur (1942,  PG)
Saboteur
this movie was inconsistent. parts of it were incredible and other parts were below average. some things werent explained well and the acting wasnt great, but the overall theme was very good. the end was abrupt and weak, such a complex story should have ended better.
15
Suspicion (1941,  Unrated)
Suspicion
often considered to be one of hitchcocks early greats, i really liked this film a lot but i found it to be just a tad too slowly moving. i loved the end of the film and as always hitchcock brought in an effective level of suspense, but the first 30 minutes were dry and it took too long to warm up to the characters. overall a solid film that i recommend but not one of hitchcocks best.
16
Strangers on a Train (1951,  PG)
Strangers on a Train
this was an enjoyable film. the psychological element was well built and the story very intriguing. the end was weak, and endings seem to be the make or break for me with hitchcocks films, but the film up until the final 15 minutes was wonderful.
17
The Wrong Man (1957,  Unrated)
The Wrong Man
one of hitchcocks more average films. it certainly wasnt bad, vera miles was beautiful in the film and fonda turned in a typically serviceable performance, but the story was slow and unengaging. this film would have been a full star better with better pacing and about 20 minutes knocked off. hitchcocks stab at the telling of a true story.
