director 11: spielberg films

  1. sanjurosamurai
  2. danny

steven spielberg is not often mentioned among the great directors of all time by the more knowledgeable and critical movie buffs. he is seen as a blockbuster director with simple filming agendas rather than a creative and groundbreaking filmaker. i find these characterizations to be very inaccurate. spielberg is easily one of the most iconic and important directors to ever live, having made some of the truly landmark films in history. while he is not one of my top 6 directors, he is a great one and my respect for him as a filmmaker is endless. here is a list of the spielberg films i have seen in order of favorites.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) (1981,  PG)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark)
the best film of this top notch trilogy, one of the best adventures of all time.

Munich (2005,  R)
Munich
although raiders of the lost ark is still my favorite of spielbergs films, this may very well be his magnum opus, and that is in the light of films like schindlers list and jaws. a masterpiece of the highest quality, every actor, every shot, every line was perfect. the screenplay was beautifully crafted by roth, and geoffrey rush put in a subtly brilliant performance. the musical score was also effective, and despite the long running time the films pacing was flawless. a stellar film.
3
Schindler's List (1993,  R)
Schindler's List
one of the saddest things ever put onto the screen. this is one of the greatest films ever made, but its also one of the hardest to watch. a masterpiece that should always be seen by any movie fan at least once in life.
4
Amistad (1997,  R)
Amistad
wow. what a powerful film. this movie had little to do with entertainment and much to do with human nature. there were unforgetable scenes in this film, like the two slaves discussing Scripture using only pictures and the speach given by John Quincy Adams (anthony hopkins) at the end of the film. this movie was haunting and heartbreaking, yet it was filled with themes of hope, salvation, and courage. one of the truly great films that has ever been made, the acting was incredible and this is easily one of spielbergs best films. lets all stop neglecting this film and give it the due it deserves.
5
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989,  PG-13)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
An epic. Adventure at its finest.
6
Minority Report (2002,  PG-13)
Minority Report

Catch Me If You Can

Jurassic Park (1993,  PG-13)
Jurassic Park
fantastic, a true cultural phenomenon when it was released and it lived up to the hype. one of the great sci-fi/monster movies of all time.
13
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984,  PG)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
the worst of the three and still fantastic
14

16
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008,  PG-13)
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
the movie was a lot of fun, but entertainment and a bit of nostalgia were the only things this film really accomplished. this film doesnt downgrade the franchise because it was a very solid movie, but it was a mere shadow of indiana jones glory. ultimately, the real problem was sheer silliness. the entire film i thought multiple times, "that was really silly."
karen allens character was so silly she seemed drunk the whole film, and most of the action sequences were so silly that they felt like they belonged in a national lampoons spoof version of indiana jones. i didnt mind the absurdity of the plot that ive heard many complain about because temple of doom was equally absurd and i enjoyed that film, but the other indy films maintained semblences of realism within the adventure, this one did not. this might be nitpicking, but the lighting in this film was also really bad, it sort of felt too bright, like the characters were glowing. indiana jones is supposed to be a dark film. in all a good watch, but disappointing as an indy jones film.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977,  PG)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
truly one of the landmark films of the sci-fi genre, spielberg delivered one of his many very solid films. it was a fun film with a great story. the fate of dreyfuss' character was a major dissapointment to me cinsidering that he had a family, but for the most part the film was great.
18
The Lost World - Jurassic Park (1997,  PG-13)
The Lost World - Jurassic Park
the worst of the three, where is dr. grant?
19
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001,  PG-13)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
this movie should have ended like 3 times
