director 04: zwick films
here is my list of the edward zwick films i have seen. zwick is definitely one of my favorite directors, finding his niche after the release of his first few films. i see zwick as a director that takes on tough social issues, from nazi's, to women in combat, to blacks fighting in the civil war, to the corruption of the government, to slave trade in africa. every zwick film holds intense meaning and profound worldly implications. here are the zwick films i have seen in order of favorites.

The Last Samurai (2003, R)
Introspective. For someone who is more into samurai films than anyone I know, this one is the best of them. Brilliant. i was mezmorized by the precise calculation and execution of every scene. zwick isnt counted among the greats, but this is a stunning directing job. This movie made me like Tom Cruise. |

Defiance (2009, R)
ed zwick makes more hits than p. diddy. i say this sarcastically of course, but this really is another excellent film from my favorite living director. the real glaring negative with this film is that the love stories, all three of them, were very forced. since the loves of these men were central parts of the film, it could have used another 20 to 30 minutes to include scenes that convinced the audience of the authenticity of the relationships. despite this, the rest of the film was magnificent. the score was intense, the cinematography was beautiful, and the emotion pulled from the central characters was genuine and engaging. not quite the oscar contender i wish it was or that it hoped to be, but still one of the better films of 2008. |

Legends of the Fall (1994, R)
an early film for the genius edward zwick, this is a truly beautiful movie with astounding cinematography and amazing locations. the scenery in nearly every shot was absolutely amazing. the acting was also solid, especially hopkins. the only thing holding this film back is the very bizarre story itself. it was difficult to find much of a sense of realism as the film played more like a soap opera than a gripping tale of humanity, but the technical elements of this flick were on point. |

The Siege (1998, R)
this is an excellent movie. denzel does a great job as usual of taking a decent movie and making it better with his on screen presence and the plot was great. tony shaloub was also cool and him being middle eastern as an FBI agent in a movie were the bad guys are all middle eastern was a cool dynamic. great movie. |
