Dirty Old Men

  Relic28's Rating My Rating
1
An Awfully Big Adventure (1995,  R)
2
Carried Away (1996,  R)
Carried Away
It would be easy to say that this movie is simply an old man's wet dream - perhaps it is... Meh, it had enough oddities and such to keep me interested for the entirety of the run time.
3
My First Mister (2002,  R)
4
Lolita (1998,  R)
5
Lolita (1962,  Unrated)
Lolita
What can I say about this movie? Passionate, funny, out of the ordinary, yet so familiar. It is a feeling that I am guessing all men have experienced once in their life time. Lolita in my opinion is a film about passion obsession and how we allow them to rule or ruin our lives.

Lolita has a very good cast and a good director so from the writing credits one should expect a good movie, and actually watching it will not let you down. Quite the opposite in fact. It is enjoyable, funny and mysterious.
6
Damage (1993,  R)
7
L.I.E. (2001,  NC-17)
L.I.E.
Brian Cox's character is creepy...like ...you know... that uncle you never trusted. A job well done.
8
Gods and Monsters (1998,  R)
9
Sin City (2005,  R)
Sin City
I love Frank Miller. This was kinda love/hate for me. I know the story - I am a junkie for it. Maybe I wasn't prepared to see it moving on it's own. Although my actual rating is mediocre - be aware that I am scoring based on my bias for the literature and not the movie itself. If I sit back and view the movie through different eyes I can easily rate it at a higher level.
10
Doctor Zhivago (1965,  PG-13)
11
Lost In Translation (2003,  R)
Lost In Translation
Bill Murray is brilliant, run down, melancholy... and did I mention brilliant.
12
The Girl in the Café (The Girl in the Cafe) (2005,  Unrated)
The Girl in the Café (The Girl in the Cafe)
Bill Nighy is absolutely wonderful in this film. It holds much more than a love story. Great characters.
13
The Lover (1992,  R)
14
American Beauty (1999,  R)
American Beauty
Kevin Spacey is perfectly caustic and Chris Cooper is sublime.
15
Monster's Ball (2001,  R)
Monster's Ball
Unforgiving racists and full tilt sex on an ugly sofa. The makings of a classic. I highly recommend it (the movie - not the racists or sex on an ugly sofa).
16
Accident (1967,  Unrated)
17
The Human Stain (2003,  R)
The Human Stain
The story on a whole bored the shit out of me... but Hopkins has the uncanny ability to hook me in regardless - he's kinda like crack that way.
18
Léon (The Professional) (1994,  R)
Léon (The Professional)
Gary Oldman in this movie is outstanding. Jean Reno is no slouch either - one of my top movies.
19
Pretty Baby (1978,  R)
Pretty Baby
Interesting piece of cinema. I think the critics that hated this movie had some reservations about the fact that the buying and selling of children actually did (does), happen.
20
Edmond (2005,  R)
Edmond
Racism for racism sake? I felt that William H. Macy was a whirlwind in this role but Mamet fell short in the script department. It was almost like he came up a few pages short of average so he decided to throw in every derogatory statement he could think of. Meh.
21
Henry & June (1990,  NC-17)
Henry & June
Kevin Spacey in probably his most... errrr... comfortable role.
22
Holy Smoke! (2000,  R)
Holy Smoke!
This movie makes me shake my head... not that I haven't seen it a few times... but I still shake my head. You don't know which character needs the most help - Keitel or Winslet. If anything, see this movie to enjoy Keitel dressed in really bad drag.
23
Stigmata (1999,  R)
Stigmata
I really enjoyed this film. I felt it had something to say - and it was clear.

It made me think - and not in a "this effing thing is preachy" kinda way.
24
Shopgirl (2005,  R)
Shopgirl
I thought this movie was kinda poignant and if you too have been involved in a relationship where he does not love as much, you can really identify with the storyline.
25
Poison Ivy (1992,  R)
Poison Ivy
Not everyones cup of tea... but I have a penchant for dirty old men.
26
Mad Dog and Glory (1993,  R)
Mad Dog and Glory
It was just kooky enough to make it really good in my eyes. Really good.
27
Under the Sun (2000,  Unrated)
Under the Sun
I found myself completely drawn to this movie. It's charming - in a subtitled kinda way.
28
You Kill Me (2007,  R)
You Kill Me
Even with the Cuisinart-blended fragments of a story, the cast is so strong that the film works. Kingsley is convincing, Leoni is superb, and the rest of the ensemble rises to the occasion with the little screen time they are given. And while the movie feels like a spoof on AA meetings and a spoof on organized crime and on funeral parlor secrets, in the end it seems like a fairly solid love story - albeit a weird one.
29
Vatel (2000,  PG-13)
30
Raja (2004,  Unrated)
Raja
Every single character in this film is an emotional masochist and deserves all the misery that they bring upon themselves.

That being said, I guess I am a bit on the masochistic side seeing as I sat through the thing. Meh.
31
Lovespell (1979,  Unrated)
32
Blaze (1989,  R)
33
The Last Days of Chez Nous (1992,  R)
34
Circle of Two (1980,  PG)
Circle of Two
So cheesy, so Canadian. I love it. Not as bad as it could have been. I think it has to do with the fact that Richard Burton holds his own and elevates the whole thing above what normally turns into garbage.
35
Compulsion (2008,  Unrated)
Compulsion
This movie was kind of like a train wreck... a perverted train wreck with unicorns.

I really didn't know who to root for because everyone had the potential to, (and ultimately displayed), both a dark side and something slightly resembling a moral core. I think that's why I'm pretty sure that I loved this movie. There is definitely something dirty and wrong about it, and that's the draw. After you see what the characters do to, and for, each other - there are really no surprises. So, when you are left there blinking at a love/rape/stabbing scene you have no choice but to dig it completely and move on.

Sometimes when I refuse to sleep at night I am rewarded for my stubbornness in the form of a film that is a love story on heavy heavy medication, or, I am just a total perv with sleep deprivation. Either way this movie made my night.
