Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937,  G)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 4.0 Stars
I can imagine 1937 movie audiences just completely losing their shit when they saw this beautiful, masterfully animated film up on the big screen. I mean, it had to be literally stunning, since all cartoon animation up to that point had been primitive, restrained, and largely black-and-white at that. Then along comes this incredible, unprecedented achievement, full of life and music and humor and emotion...they must have been weeping in their seats.

The first movie I ever saw in a cinema. Upon subsequent viewings, the ominous music that would play whenever the hunters were drawing near would always scare the hell out of me.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949,  G)
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad 4.5 Stars
A great pair of whimsical Disney features based on charming literary classics.

"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is a remarkably faithful adaptation of Washington Irving's tale (Tim Burton, eat your heart out), with wonderful music that is only enhanced by the narrative stylings of Bing Crosby. When I was growing up, it was unbreakable tradition that we watch it every Halloween night.

The other feature, "The Wind in the Willows", is equally entertaining and light-hearted. Funny and adventurous.

The "Beauty and the Beast" of its time, "Sleeping Beauty" is an extremely high point in Disney's laudable history of animated features. The imagery and music are gorgeous, and the characters and storyline are strong.
