"I'M RETIRED, I INVENTED DICE AS A KID"..................................................... Kilmer and Downey jr are freakin cool in this movie. a really cool smart, cleverly written fun movie. The dialogue is spot on and the characters are all brilliant Michelle Monaghan is awesome too, funny, and cute!, could you ask for much more?! Give this movie a whirl, it'll shock you, keep you entertained and have you giggling all at the same time................................................... "CAN YOU TWO GET OUT OF THE WAY, YOU'RE IN THE THE SHOT"
"i'm the guy doing his job, you must be the other guy" .................................................................. From the opening scenes you know your in for a treat. Scorsese is at the wheel and your in for a hell of a ride. The soundtrack, the editing, that incredible camera work, it's all scorsese showing he's the master of his craft.
Then theres the cast, and it's like the cast of the gods, jack, leo, matt damon all on top form. Jack making it look easy, leo just raising his own bar again and matt has'nt been this good since good will. But it does'nt end there, throw in baldwin, sheen, winstone and a super funny performance from walberg and it makes for one of the finest ensembles in quite some time and no one tries to step on the others toes, it's all played out for the sake of the movie and you just end up wrapped up in it all unfolding.
A great movie that is up there with the best of the year, it's not quite scorsese at his best, even though it's darn close and head and shoulders above most other movies in it's field in recent years and just all the individual ingredients make it a must see for everyone who loves movies.
................................................................ "Bullshit! What the fuck are you fucking waiting for? Honestly, do you want him to chop me up and feed me to the fucking poor? "
"Finish it" "i don't know how it ends" ................................................................... The fountain may very well be over stylized, it may even be indulgant, and it could very well have been a perfect movie if 20 minutes had been shaved off the end, but despite this it got me and it's the way it handled its themes that totally did it.
The genius way in which "the point" is laid out to you and the importance of it just so beautifully struck a cord. The use of the 3 story arcs at first seemed forced but the importance of it becomes clear as you travel through the steps in this ongoing cycle of mortality, obession, defiance, loss, fear...and more importantly final acceptance of how things are and that elusive "one more moment".
Whether the 3 story arcs are real, made up stories or dreams becomes insignificant. they are all messages that amount to the same thing and that it what made the movie so great for me...the moment when hugh's character says he "can die now" was just the cherry on the cake and on 1st viewing the movie could have ended there
It seems a strange comparison, but revenge of the sith and the main themes in the star wars saga deal with many of the same questions and decisions laid out in the fountain and it may be a hard pill to swallow for anyone looking for a more complex tale and some may even miss the point to a certain degree...but the simplicity of it was what made it so great..
Aronofsky once again delivers a complex piece of art that makes him unique in movies. I may not have connected with with his previous work as much as i did with this, but i have always enjoyed his it. As for Hugh jackman he has more than bounced back to form in the last few years after his unfortunate misstep with van shitling, i was geniunly worried he may have gone too far into the bad place with that, but with the like of this, scoop, some of his animated work and the masterpiece that is the prestige he's back in the game.
I genuinly can't wait to rewatch the fountain many many times and put together the smaller pieces of the puzzle and just get caught up in it all over again .
Not for everyone...but and unexepected surprise of the year for me! ............................................................. "Finish it"
