Five years have past since Superman 2 apparently and everyone has got, well quite a bit younger it would seem.
The film seems like a reworking of the original Superman, from crashing asteroid, to the US being washed beneath the sea and Kriptonite inspired drowning moment (in the ocean this time - rather than in the pool).
But its not the original. Its quite wide of the originals and while there is no one reason for this the almost total absence of Clarke Kent (screen time and especially lines) probably doesn't help. If the director had so little faith in his lead perhaps he might have considered casting someone else.
Still enjoyable fast past fodder if you like this kind of thing.
This films a bit of a lie and it lies rather well - the way it was introduced on TV you could be forgiven for thinking it somewhat outside the normal parameters of polite Sunday night viewing and it was a polite Sunday night.
While not the pleasant weaving a family blanket style fodder for grandparent visits, that is certainly true, it is however a sweet hearted tale. Probably even more unrealistic (given the circumstances and nature of the two main characters) than its happier, warmer all round fluffier cousin Pretty Women.
The two rather broken protagonists behave in a manner that would have somewhat serious legal and fiscal ramifications in the real working world.
Its unusual, well performed and maybe because it focuses so strongly on the two lead characters and occurs in very few environments the film feels rather more like a play.
The oddity of the circumstances and characters, well disguises this soft underbelly until the last. The film is all the better for it. Though probably rather unrealistic and overly customary of US films, it would be rather hard to wish for anything other than a happy end that ultimately arrives.
Probably the best of the Bill Murray films and the finest Rom-Com there is. Before Rom-Com gave up on the com part almost entirely and just become pink ill flavoured mush on a plastic stick (& before Andy McDowell ran the risk of developing full blown wood rot in ill judged rain scenes) this film has actual funny moments. Admittedly they are unevenly clustered in the earlier parts of the film but you can?t have everything.
If i had a day to live over and over and over again. .. ... what would i do ? it?s a interesting if simple premise, Murray?s character may always be very familiar but at least it?s layered and for those that forgive the film some of it cheese this is about as good as this type of film gets.
An interesting story or rather is it two stories and its left to you to decide which you see.
Its either the typical medley of unpleasant, weirdness and tragedy of traditional fair tale stories or its a brutal & tragic story of a mother and daughter during Franco regime in Spain.
Maybe its both - though I'm not sure how.
The young protagonist invests herself and her hopes in a life within a fantastical world, but is it real? Or imagined - the only avenue available, to escape the escalating desperation and sadness of the situation she's drawn into?
Either way the imaginary world is that of traditional fairytale and almost equally unsuited to younger views as the real alternative.
Deeply imaginative, layered and tragic, this well performed film has much to recommend it. It is rather unpleasant at times though.
