Angels in America (,  Unrated)
Angels in America
Truly amazing piece of work. Actors were perfect for their roles and dialogue was exceptional.
2
Der Baader Meinhof Komplex (The Baader Meinhof Complex) (2008,  R)
Der Baader Meinhof Komplex (The Baader Meinhof Complex)
I believe there's so much things to say about this subject but it isn't necessary to cram them all in one movie. Therefore there were a couple of scenes that weren't just going nowhere. However... it was fascinating. Absolutely kept me gripped the whole time, great acting and minimalistic cinematography (kind of like those old German crime tv series).
3
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) (1920,  Unrated)
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)
For once the plot made me pleasantly confused. And it was overall pretty ahead of its time so kudos for that. [edit] I watched it again recently and liked it even more. You know what they say: it takes time to fall in love to great masterpieces (or something like that).
4
The Crying Game (1992,  R)
The Crying Game
You know, the "twist" was kind of expected. At least I figured it out as soon as I saw Dil. Not perfect but for some reason it held on to me.
5
The Elephant Man (1980,  PG)
The Elephant Man
A study on different exploitations but the real John Merrick's life wasn't exactly what this movie portrays it to be. Despite the taking of liberties it's wonderfully subtle image of a man who just happens to look different and what is sadly the first thing people see.
6
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001,  R)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Weird, quirky and fantastic music. Well deserves its cult status.
7
Léon (The Professional) (1994,  R)
Léon (The Professional)
Gary Oldman's maniac character is just one of the interesting aspects. It has more depth to the characters than any action movie I have ever seen.
8
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
The most boring of the three but it gets around to start properly it's beautiful to watch.
9
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (2002,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
The most dark of the three which is a good thing but then again the constant battling can be exhausting despite the wonderful execution. And may I ask, why did they do that to Haldir?!
10
M (1931,  Unrated)
M
An excellent portrayal of both the murderer's mind and the mob's reaction to the horrible events. Hauntingly beautiful camera work and Peter Lorre is amazing.
11
Moulin Rouge! (2001,  PG-13)
Moulin Rouge!
Captures the magical world of Moulin Rouge excellently and takes musicals to a whole new dimension.
12
Mystic River (2003,  R)
Mystic River
I didn't except much before watching so this completely surprised me. Penn is amazing and everything in the movie just clicks. Acting, cinematography... Storyline is good and leaves something to ponder even if you watch it again.
13
The Others (2001,  PG-13)
The Others
Great twist in the end. An example how creepiness can be achieved without extreme gore.
14
Schindler's List (1993,  R)
Schindler's List
Striking story about one man who wanted to save thousands of innocents.
15
Some Like It Hot (1959,  Unrated)
Some Like It Hot
Why haven't I seen this before? It was hilarious and the ending scene just cracked me up. Truly one of the best comedies and which deserves the title "favourite movie".
16
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951,  PG)
A Streetcar Named Desire
Oh yes. Brando's performance is intense (comparing to Leigh who managed to irritate me, I guess her style wasn't my cup of tea) and everything just kept me wide awake and glued to the screen. Heat makes everybody crazy ;P
17
Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Grey (Not Against the Flesh) (Adventures of David Gray) (Castle of Doom (1932,  Unrated)
Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Grey (Not Against the Flesh) (Adventures of David Gray) (Castle of Doom
Kind of surrealistic atmosphere. Excellent directing and beautiful scenes.
18
Vincent and Theo (1990,  PG-13)
Vincent and Theo
Roth really transforms himself as Vincent which itself is a remarkable achievement. Every single word and act shows the bond between the two brothers. I like the pace and how some of the scenes are just filled with silence or the hauntingly perfect music. Final minutes are touching and depressing.
