Le Samouraï (The Godson) (1967, PG)
Le Samourai is tre cool ! Jean-Pierre Melville's ganster drama about a hitman(Alain Delon) roaming the streets in Paris in search for answers from his former employer as he escapes and dodges the cities persistant detectives and rival hitman. Every corner is a constant look over his shoulder in a life style where only the most coldest and most deceitful survive. Le Samourai is pure genious and was a film way ahead of it's time. In the tradition of suspenseful crime drama's this film carries tension in every scene and is done so well. Delon is as cool as they get playing a lonely, stolid, hitman with a monotone voice who's empty stare holds more to the eye. His faithful companion, a finch in a cage that keeps him company in his sad and reclused apartment. This is a great film that delivers masterfully, it can be easily seen with similarities of future films in the same genre. This was probably one of the films that might of inspired Luc Besson to create Leon in "Leon the Professional." |

La Science des Rêves (The Science of Sleep) (2006, R)
Dam, I thought I was having a flashback during some scenes in this movie. I've been a fan of Director Michel Gondry's music videos, especially "The Work of Director Michel Gondry " which if you haven't seen is incredible and of course of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". "The Science of Sleep" takes us into the mind of Stéphane Miroux (Gael Garcia Bernal) as his unbalanced, timid and dream controlled world is his reality and escape. The film shows us how Stéphane can't seperate reality from his dreams and as I continued watching this film more and more I realized I related to his character somewhat. What I really enjoyed from the movie was the acting, the dialouge and the dream scenes that can be so ridiculous but that is exactly how they really are. With lines like "WILL YOU MARRY ME WHEN YOU ARE SEVENTY? YOU'D HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE" you can't go wrong. Stéphane's best friend, Guy (Alain Chabat) was hilarious and so dam sarcastic and to the point. The chemistry between Stéphanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Stéphane reminded me alot of grade school crushes and puppy love. This film to me worked and what is clear is the dreams in the film and how we interpret them. Favorite Scene: GUY: "Are you interested in Martine ? " |

Down by Law (1986, R)
On my on going quest to watch Jim Jarmusch's films, "Down by Law" is a drama/comedy done in the typical cool Jarmusch-like way. The film features Tom Waits, Roberto Benigni and my favorite John Lurie. We follow the lives of these three through their seperate lives and ultimatley they end up in jail. A bond is formed and the rest is a film full of desicions drama and ofcourse the comedy. My favorite scene: the 'ICE SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE SCREAM" jail song ! The film is all about the journey and where you end up made by decisions during hard moments in life. Cool story, good acting..Jarmusch is cooler than Tarantino because unlike using catchy dialouge or with a gun like Tarantino , Jarmusch does it with pure concrete ORIGINAL style and cinematography. |

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006, R)
What an incredible journey into the mind of a child set in the fascist Spain of 1944. Pan's Labyrinth's visual and creative world lies in the hands of Ofelia who lives in phantasy realms of fairy tales, fauns and ogors. It is a film that reminds us as adults never to forget that side, that part we lose as adults and had as children, the innocent reality to believe when life seems so unbearable, despite the odds. What I loved about the film was the element of humanity seen through the eyes of Ofelia. This 12 year old girl watching her pregnant mother suffer as she meets what is soon to become her ruthless militant step-father. Mix that in with fantasy and the imagination of a child where hope is reachable. Ofelia is at that age where you leave childhood and begin your path towards adolescence. It is now her darkest and most difficult time where she must become the woman who she will be the rest of her life and inspire others. Pan's Labyrinth inspired me and as few films do, it left me wondering and reminded me that hope is always just around the corner. FAVORITE SCENE: Ofelia awakens the pale ogor like creature and watches it eat one of her fairies. |

The Edukators (Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei) (2005, R)
Excellent Film! Enjoyed it from beginning to end. I really was entertained by the directors attention on this tiny band of revolutionaries/activists and how you only see and enjoy they're highs and lows. There is no opossing treat, the only threat is the philosophy and political opinion one believes in. The film has such a huge message and it all starts with YOU and what's inside. The Edukators to me represents, a base, a foundation to thinking the way you will think and be the rest of your life. Through the film an issue with Jule (Julia Jentsch) comes close to disbanding the "group" but ultimatly the Edukators have such a strong bond and their IDEALS is what holds this group together. Many people are afraid of truly saying what they feel, especially in politics. The Edukators says this very clear from beginning to end. Favorite part: "I admit that some of what you say is true, but I'm the wrong person to be blamed for. Yes, I've been playing the game but I didn't make up the rules." |

The Killing (1956, Unrated)
Stanley Kubrick is a landmark and example to filmmakers of how cinema should be done. Kubrick's 1956 crime drama "The Killing" is on point with any film of it's genre that can be done today. A definite contemporary flick! I saw this movie back in film school and was completely amazed how Kubrick created such an amazing crime flick. When watching this film you can see a sense of an early "Reservoir Dogs" being born. It's that type of billiance Kubrick brings to the table, and in all of his films aswell. In "The Killing' a group rounded up to make a "killing" in a heist at a racetrack, but ultimately the group is faced with problems within it's inner circle. The film is the grandfather to films like 'Reservoir Dogs" , "Scarface" and 'Pulp Fiction" It's film noir-ish style is a must see for the modern day lover of this genre. What I enjoyed from the film was how this group of criminals each have their own flavor and intensity. The usual suspects are all here, the muscle, the brains, the worry wart, the sniper and the head. It's pretty cool that this film was made in 1956 and still manages to get your attention. This film will never get remade. |

300 (2007, R)
"300" is a flesh ripping roar through the vision of Frank Miller courtesy of director Zack Snyder. It was an action packed flick with plenty of speared bodies, decapitations and incredible fight scenes. The story of 300 Spartans as they fight against a million Persians is a hefty tale to create. I really liked the green screen filled flick, thought it was gonna take me out of the movie but as soon as the film began I completely forgot about that! Frank Miller's graphic novel re-creates and brings back the story to a new generation. A story that was surely forgotten in history classes throughout High schools now resurrected and brought back to the silver screen. I liked how they focused on King Leonidas psyche , didn't think they would bring that into the film but obviously Miller creates his characters with that thinking mentality and problem solving aspect and was very important to the film. Great flick, a must for my DVD collection. Favorite Scene: Stelios and Astinos take out several Persians in a ballet like massacre! Bravo! |

Satanás (Satan) (2007, R)
Incredible film! so raw, so intensely real. "Satanas" is based on the true story of the infamous Pozzetto Massacre in 1985 Bogotá, Colombia. The movie revolves around 3 characters with their personal or economic struggles. Obviously with a title like "Satanas" the film has it's violent scenes, some viewers may be offended or shocked. IMDB gave this film a 8.1, I actually think it deseved a little more based on how the narative was done so well into taking us in the mind of a man escalating into his personal hell and also how the story was well written and constructed to it's explosive finale. Probably one of the best if not the best Colombian film I have seen. It's style can resemble films like "City of God" and "Amores Perros". |

A film we can all relate to in some way or another. Straw Dogs is a film that builds, a film that gets the attention and lurks under your skin.
