Saved! (2004,  PG-13)
2
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005,  PG)
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Who cares that a little girl is dying? The *real* reason to rush home is that the cool blonde girl had sex . . . and didn't like it. That's not really what happens in the movie, but that's how it comes off. Even still, the movie is cute and fun and a good girlie movie.
3
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004,  R)
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
This movie feels like a group of guys sat in a circle and played the "D'ya know what would be funny?" Game and then used those ideas as plot points. "D'ya know what would be funny? If Neil Patrick Harris stole your car." And somehow--miraculously--it works, and it works well.
4
Sleepless in Seattle (1993,  PG)
Sleepless in Seattle
I'm sentimental and love this movie with every ounce of my soul. The soundtrack is timeless, and I still look for my soulmate near the Empire State Building.
5
Flight of the Navigator (1986,  PG)
Flight of the Navigator
The opening sequence of a dogs-catching-frisbees competition is classic 80s.
6
The Mighty Ducks (1992,  PG)
The Mighty Ducks
"I'm no lady; I'm a duck." At least, I really wanted to be after seeing this. I harbored secret dreams of joining a ragtag team of hockey players and making it far. I still get sucked in and immediately return to my 12-year-old self, cheering, "Quack! Quack! Quack!" even if only in my head.
7
Short Circuit (1986,  PG)
Short Circuit
"Five is alive!"
8
Flashdance (1983,  R)
Flashdance
I always think that I like this a lot more than I actually do.
9
Varsity Blues (1999,  R)
Varsity Blues
"I don't wann your life."
10
D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996,  PG)
D3: The Mighty Ducks
I don't know why, but I love this movie.
11
The Skulls (2000,  PG-13)
The Skulls
"If it's secret and elite, it can't be good." Just give in to it. It's silly but not as fluffy as it could have been, and it commits to itself fully, so--while it doesn't wink to let you know it's in on the joke--it doesn't try to be anything other than what it is and plays off the concepts and themes really well. Oh, and then there's the great scene in the shower with "Taste" playing. Yeah. :)
12
Ella Enchanted (2004,  PG)
Ella Enchanted
I had no desire to see this movie. I thought it looked really stupid--Disney capitalizing on its previous success of putting Anne Hathaway in a tiara. Don't be fooled: just because it wasn't branded Disney doesn't mean it isn't. Whether or not this was the studio's intention, the end product is much more than that. The film is clever, enchanting (ba dum dum chiiiish), and fun. While it can't hold up to the book (don't judge), which I listened to on tape (really don't judge), it commits to its altered storyline with energy and wit.
13
The Watcher in the Woods (1981,  PG)
The Watcher in the Woods
I analyzed this film for a paper on Disney's production values during the transition from Ron Miller to Michael Eisner in the early-80s. Many of the lines are cheesy, the effects are laughable (as an indirect result of this regime change--long story), and parts just don't make sense . . . but this movie is CLASSIC. Almost better than the movie is the director's commentary, which reveals much more of the intent.
14
Sneakers (1992,  PG-13)
Sneakers
No matter that I know all the twists and turns, I can watch this movie over and over--even several times in a row. Great acting, mixed with a fun storyline and a really great second sequence make this my go-to movie when I know I want to watch something but am too overwhelmed by my collection to make a decision.
15
200 Cigarettes (1999,  R)
200 Cigarettes
When I first saw this, I thought, "What a great group of one-liners" (my favorite of which shifts every time you ask me or I decide to tell you unprovoked). After many, many viewings, I've picked up on the subtleties of how the characters are interconnected. The fact that you sit there saying, "Hey, that's Christina Ricci. Look--Kate Hudson!" the whole time doesn't take away from the film either, as it does in other more serious fare.
16
The Skateboard Kid II (1995,  PG)
The Skateboard Kid II
This movie has the distinction of being my go-to for the worst movie ever made.
17
Mysterious Skin (2005,  NC-17)
Mysterious Skin
Mysterious Skin is the most effective film I've ever seen. From Araki's directing to Gordon-Levitt's performance, I'm hard-pressed to find a single thing I dislike about it (in spite of the sensitive subjects). The audio commentary on the DVD is far and away my favorite of all time as well. Araki, Gordon-Levitt, and Corbet are a great combo, giving technical, theoretical, and anecdotal interpretations, respectively.
18
Twelve and Holding (12 and Holding) (2006,  R)
Twelve and Holding (12 and Holding)
12 and Holding is one of the most emotionally simple and affecting movies I've seen recently.
19
Cloak & Dagger (1984,  PG)
Cloak & Dagger
C&D is my favorite movie of all time. I understand that others will not love it the way I do, but my passion will never fade.
20
The Day After Tomorrow (2004,  PG-13)
The Day After Tomorrow
As a parody, this is one of the best films in recent memory. Taken at face-value, I would give it many fewer stars.

I studied this film for a paper I wrote, so I have an obsessive appreciation for it. I'm still deathly afraid of The Wheelers.

The Last Boy Scout
Mmmm...Bruce Willis doing one of the things he does best, playing a grizzled, down-on-his luck detective.
93
Brick (2006,  R)
94
Charade (1963,  G)
95
L' Appartement (The Apartment) (1996,  R)
96
Wicker Park (2004,  PG-13)
Wicker Park
The movie you saw in the trailer is not this movie. This movie is much better than what the trailer would lead you to believe. The original French film that _Wicker Park_ is based on is quite wonderful, but I fell for this version as well because of the mood, the soundtrack, and the intimacy of the shooting-style.
97
National Treasure (2004,  PG)
98
Danny Deckchair (2003,  PG-13)
99
The Deep End (2001,  R)

104
Field of Dreams (1989,  PG)
105
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984,  PG)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
I refused to see this for almost fifteen years because I had heard bad things and didn't want to break the spell that the Indiana Jones movies has on me. I decided to watch it before the new movie came out and now can understand why others warned me from it. If the films had been shot and shown in chronological order, I don't think I would have continued with the series based on this one. I can't even put my finger on what feels off (lots of people have tried, I know), but everything from the tone, the structure, the tempo, etc. seem different from Raiders and Last Crusade. An extra star-and-a-half simply because it's an Indy movie.
106
The Departed (2006,  R)
107
Matchstick Men (2003,  PG-13)
108
Smoke Signals (1998,  PG-13)

110
Inside Man (2006,  R)
