Ye yan (Legend of the Black Scorpion) (The Banquet) (2006,  Unrated)
Ye yan (Legend of the Black Scorpion) (The Banquet)
Sets and scenery beyond compare. Beautifully, haunting score. For those who know East Asian Cinema is more than just martial arts. Zhang Ziyi give one of the best performances I've seen as an actress.
2
Gladiator (2000,  R)
Gladiator
What Alexander attempted to be as a film, and failed miserably. Russell Crowe perfomance makes this piece of cinematic glory worthy of the title epic.
3
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (2002,  PG-13)
4
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
5
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (2003,  PG-13)
6
Saving Private Ryan (1998,  R)
7
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005,  PG)
8
Hero (2004,  PG-13)
Hero
A love story beyond compare. Beautiful scenes, use of colour to characterize the narrative is amazing.
9
Amistad (1997,  R)
10
Water (2005,  PG-13)
Water
Deserves the oscar nod for best foreign film. Mehta's triumph, also destined to become a classic.

Va, Vis et Deviens (Live and Become) (Go, See, and Become) (2005,  Unrated)

The Syrian Bride (2005,  Unrated)

Munich (2005,  R)
Munich
One of Spielberg's greatest films. Due to become a classic. It was also great to see him break from his personal style a bit, and produce such a great-looking film, gritty and artistic.
14
Crash (2004,  R)
15
Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey (1988,  PG-13)
16
Kingdom of Heaven (2005,  R)
Kingdom of Heaven
Beautifully shot in Ridley Scott's sweeping style, rich in cinematic detail. I am looking forward to watching the Director's Cut, to see the film as was originally intended - a meditation on religion and history as opposed to a battle-heavy action adventure.
17
Changeling (2008,  R)
Changeling
Another film that illustrates Eastwood's directorial prowess. Jolie delivers a pitch-perfect performance although not surprising that a role like this would resonate with her. The faithfulness to the story in its horrific accuracy validates the director's quiet choices. Any

The Wrestler (2008,  R)
The Wrestler
A triumph by Darren Aronofsky. Nicolas Cage did a great deed stepping down to allow Rourke to play this role seemingly tailor-made for him. Perfectly shot, acted and paced, this film feels more real than most of the docu-dramas on the market.
19
Schindler's List (1993,  R)
Schindler's List
The seminal film depicting the horrors of the holocaust. A direct argument to anyone who claims Spielberg undermines the plight of the Jews in Munich.

Auf der Anderen Seite (The Edge of Heaven) (On the Other Side) (2007,  Unrated)
Auf der Anderen Seite (The Edge of Heaven) (On the Other Side)
A great follow-up to Fatih Akin's Head-On. The interweaving storylines are thoughtful and deeply emotional yet seem unforced.
21
Samsara (2002,  R)
Samsara
A love story, centred in the beautiful Tibetan landscape. A thoughtful examination of the role of women in the buddhist religion.
22
Jindabyne (2006,  R)
Jindabyne
A well-cast, beautifully acted drama centred on issues of morality, adult relationships and race.
23
The Four Feathers (2002,  PG-13)
