Awakenings (1990,  PG-13)
Awakenings
Sweet & interesting medical movie. Not the Robin Williams you're used to.
2
Something the Lord Made (2004,  Unrated)
Something the Lord Made
A true story about one of the first heart operations ever done at Hopkins. Not only a good medical history movie but also a great black history film as well.
3
The Cider House Rules (1999,  PG-13)
The Cider House Rules
Goodnight, you princes of Maine. You kings of New England.
4
The Rainmaker (1997,  PG-13)
The Rainmaker
Excellent movie about how the health insurance companies try to cheat their clients.
5
Medicine Man (1992,  PG-13)
Medicine Man
Underrated film about finding a cure for cancer in the Amazon. Sean Connery is great, as usual.
6
M*A*S*H (MASH) (1970,  PG)
M*A*S*H (MASH)
Although I loved the TV series more, the original movie is still fantastic!
7
Philadelphia (1993,  PG-13)
Philadelphia
This touching film made me re-evaluate some of my misconceptions about AIDs
8
The Painted Veil (2006,  PG-13)
The Painted Veil
In addition to the beautiful scenery, I found the medical aspect of treating cholera during the 1920s to be fascinating. I also enjoyed how the couple came to love and respect one another over the course of time. I just wish the ending had been a little happier.
9
And the Band Played On (1993,  PG-13)
And the Band Played On
The story of the discovery of the AIDS epidemic.
10
Miss Evers' Boys (1997,  PG)
Miss Evers' Boys
This is the story of the nurse who participated in the Tuskegee experiment done in Alabama during WWII. The goverment wanted to repeat a syphilis study that had been done in Oslo during the late 1800s. Back then it was done on white men before a cure was known. This time, they wanted African American subjects because they believed they were inferior to white people.

These men were lied to. They were told they were getting treatment when in reality, they were only being studied. Even after penicillin was discovered to cure this disease, the goverment still withheld treatment from these men so the ravages of the disease could continue to be studied. They eventually developed tertiary (late stage) syphilis and went blind, crazy or had neurological deficits. They finally held a senate hearing in 1973 but by then, there were only about 127 men left out of the original 400 plus they had started with.

The Doctor (1991,  PG-13)
The Doctor
This was an interesting movie about a cocky surgeon who is diagnosed with throat cancer.

After having to deal with life as a patient for a while, he realizes how unsympathetic he was towards his patients.

I was pleased to see a lot of the major players from the TV series "Chicago Hope" in this movie, even though it was made a few years before the TV series.
12
Lorenzo's Oil (1992,  PG-13)
Lorenzo's Oil
This movie was not very dynamic but I still found it fascinating. It is a drama based on the true story of Augusto and Michaela Odone, two parents who found a way to stave off their son's rare disease (ALD) with a certain type of oil.
13
Out of the Ashes (2003,  Unrated)
Out of the Ashes
This was one of those movies that had me thinking all night after I watched it.

The first 20 minutes were slow but as they delved into Dr. Perl's past, it became heartbreaking to witness what this Jewish doctor had to do to survive the Holocaust.

Seeing the pregnant women getting gassed and experimented on by nazi Dr. Menegle made me understand why she performed all those illegal abortions while in Auschwitz.
