Sixteen Candles (1984,  PG)
Sixteen Candles
This is my favorite of all the John Hughes films, just ahead of Ferris Bueller. I've seen it like 30 times and it's funny every time I see it. Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall are great.

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
The best of all the Star Wars films. There is no way it could have been any better. It tops A New Hope in every way and that's saying a lot because Hope was a great film. Empire is darker and more things are learned and more characters are introduced. I mean you've got Luke meeting Yoda and then going through training. The actual first appearance of bad ass bounty hunter Boba Fett. We learn how Han got the Falcon from Lando. And of course, Luke's first lightsaber fight with Vader. Freaking awesome.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) (1981,  PG)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark)
Totally entertaining movie. Harrison Ford is perfect as Indiana and Karen Allen has her best role as Marion. One of Spielberg's best films. Top notch all the way around.

Indiana:"You want to talk to God? Let's go see him together. I've got nothing better to do".

Back to the Future (1985,  PG)
5
Die Hard (1988,  R)
Die Hard
One of the best action films ever made. The one that made Bruce Willis into a movie star. The one that introduced Alan Rickman to the world. And of course the one to start all those terrorists on a train, boat, plane, etc type movies. But this is the best one. Bruce is perfect as John McClane-the tough NY cop who battles terrorists one Christmas Eve in a hi rise in LA. Loaded with sensational action and plenty of one liners from Bruce. A must have in your DVD collection.

Supervisor: "Attention, whoever you are. This channel is reserved for emergency calls only.."
McClane: "No fucking shit, lady. Do I sound like I'm ordering a pizza?"

Takagi: "You want money? What kind of terrorists are you?"
Hans: "Who said we were terrorists?"

After 25 years, this film still rocks. The showdown in Metropolis is still awesome.

9
Gremlins (1984,  PG)
10
The Terminator (1984,  R)
The Terminator
Just watched this sci-fi classic for the first time in years and it's still great. I saw it on HDNet Movies and it looks pretty good for a 23 year old movie. Of course, you know the story by now, a cyborg is sent from the future to present day LA to kill Sarah Connor. One lone soldier is also sent back to stop it. Schwarzenegger is positively awesome as the killer cyborg. He doesn't have much dialogue but he has a commanding presence. Linda Hamilton is good as Sarah Connor and Michael Biehn kicks ass in his role as Reese, the soldier sent to protect her. Some of the makeup effects may look a little shoddy when compared to the CG films of today. But the action scenes still work. The wholesale slaughter at the police station by Arnie is slam bang in your face action, perfectly directed by James Cameron. 7 years later, the sequel put a nice new gloss on the story and wowed me again.

Aliens (1986,  R)
Aliens
Terrific sequel that is the perfect follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1979 original Alien. This time James Cameron (The Terminator) takes over and creates one of the best films ever made. Set 57 years after the events of the first film, sole survivor Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver's best performance ever) is picked up floating adrift in space in suspended animation. She is taken back to Earth and has to explain what happened to her crew-mates and the very expensive ship that she blew up. Of course no one believes her story of an alien that killed her mates and almost got her too. And the planet where they picked up the creature is now populated by engineers and their families. But suddenly when all communication is lost, a team of US Colonial Marines are dispatched to investigate. Ripley reluctantly goes along as an advisor. The setup is perfect and soon the marines are under full assault by a planet full of aliens. There is only one survivor there on the planet, a little girl named Newt, who quickly bonds with Ripley. The action scenes are impressive, some of the best you will ever see. With a strong cast alongside Weaver that includes Michael Biehn as Corporal Hicks, Bill Paxton as the hilarious Hudson, Lance Henriksen as the android Bishop, Paul Reiser as slimy company man Bishop, and of course Jenette Goldstein as Vasquez. Director James Cameron manages to top the original Alien with this well crafted story driven sci-fi action/horror film. One of my favorite films of all time.

Romancing the Stone (1984,  PG)
Romancing the Stone
Exciting and humorous adventure flick with romance novelist Joan Wilder (wonderfully played by Kathleen Turner) traveling from New York to Colombia, South America to track down her missing sister. Along the way she runs into American adventurer Jack Colton (one of Michael Douglas' best roles) and the two are off on a sensational adventure. With kidnappers and corrupt policemen in hot pursuit. Throw in pint sized Danny Devito as Ralph, one of the kidnappers with some rousing action scenes and Stone is a winner. Wonderful dialogue is a plus. Followed a year later by The Jewel of the Nile, which is a solid enough sequel.

Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior) (1981,  R)
Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior)
In your face full throttle action flick. And what's great is, it's done with actual cars and people not none of the CG crap that is everywhere in today's movies. Mel Gibson returns as laconic ex-lawman Max who helps a small colony of surviors battle mohawked savages in the Australian outback. All for the last precious commodity in the world- fuel. Super charged action with thrilling car chases and unbelivable stunts that will leave you gasping. Definetly a must see and must have.

Max: "Two days ago, I saw a vehicle that would haul that tanker. You want to get out of here? You talk to me."

Outrageous Fortune
Bette Midler's funniest movie. She and Shelley Long are two actresses who somehow get involved in spies and goverment conspiracies. It's an unbelivable situation but funny as hell. Bette and Shelley make a great team and I was suprised they didn't make anymore films together. A really good comedy that lets the Divine Miss M do her thing.

Lauren: "Because everything that comes out of your mouth is pornographic."
Sandy: "That is a fucking lie."

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983,  R)

Beverly Hills Cop (1984,  R)
Beverly Hills Cop
One of the best action comedies ever made. It's all Eddie Murphy from the get go. Brazen, cocky, and funny , he deilvers as Detroit detective Axel Foley off to Beverly Hills to solve his friend's murder. There is actually more comedy than action in this movie, but you won't mind. You get to see Murphy when he was young and on the cusp of becoming a major star. Still holds up pretty good too.

Axel: "Gimme the keys! I'm gonna follow them!"
Jenny: "Have you ever driven a Mercedes before?"
Axel: "No, but a car is a car! I drive my car every day!"
Jenny: "I'm driving. I've seen your car."
Axel: "Oh shit, that's cold."

Hilarious comedy with Murray and Ramis as slackers who join the army and create chaos. A definitive star role for Murray who just lets loose and takes control of the entire film. But he does get solid support from Ramis, John Candy (as the lovable Ox), and Warren Oates as Drill Sgt. Hulka. And a music score that you will be humming to all day long.

For Your Eyes Only (1981,  PG)
For Your Eyes Only
Roger Moore's best Bond movie. He drops some of the witty replies and plays it tough in this one. He is on the hunt for an encryption device before it falls into enemy hands. He must also contend with a beautiful woman out to avenge her parent's murder and the affections of a young impressionable ice skater. Not to mention all the assasins and enemy agents who are on his trail. Loaded with sensational stunts and exciting action scenes. This is clearly Moore's best work in the series and one of the better Bond films to boot. Top notch song by Sheena Easton too.

Bond: "That's detente, comrade. You don't have it, I don't have it".
54
Octopussy (1983,  PG)
Octopussy
This would have been the perfect swan song for Roger Moore, but alas he came back for the disappointing A View To A Kill. Octopussy is clearly one of Moore's better Bond flicks even though his age was starting to show. Still this one delivers the goods. It has 007 investigating a jewerly smuggling operation that ends up being a coverup to detonate a nuclear bomb in Germany on a US air base. The villians include a power crazed Russian colonel and a jewerly smuggler named Kamal Khan. The lady in question Octopussy is partners with them both until she finds out she has been double crossed. Maud Adams is wonderful as Octopussy. The action in this one is top notch including a sensational opening scene involving Bond flying a small jet around a military facility. And then there's the train sequence which is just awesome. A super Bond flick that hit all the right notes.

Kamal Khan: "Mr. Bond is indeed a very rare breed...soon to be made extinct."

Escape from New York (1981,  R)
Escape from New York
Classic 80's flick with Kurt Russell ultra cool as bad ass ex-soldier now criminal, Snake Plissken. Set in 1997, he's finally caught and on his way to the maximum security prison which is now the entire state of New York. But a a group of convicts kidnap the President from Air Force One and threaten to kill them unless they're released from prison. So the prez's only hope is Snake, who reluctantly agrees. Russell is perfect as Snake who doesn't say much but kicks a lot of ass. A plus is super sexy Adrienne Barbeau as one of Snake's friends and Issac Hayes as the convicts leader.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986,  PG-13)
Big Trouble in Little China
Kurt Russell is all swagger as trucker Jack Burton in this very entertaining action/comedy that has a little bit of everything: kung fu, magic, tough talking good guys, nasty bad guys, cool fights, people flying around, and some of the best quotes of any movie in history. As Jack would say this is going to take crackerjack timing.

Lethal Weapon 2
Actually one of the rare sequels that tops the original. Bigger action, loads of humor, great villians, and the chemistry between Mel and Danny is solid. The boys take on dirty South African diplomats that is on from the opening chase scene. And by bringing in Joe Pesci, LW2 ups the humor quotient. One of the best sequels and best action flicks ever made.

Murtaugh: "I'm going die on a toilet, aren't I?"
Riggs: "Guys like you don't die on toilets".
68
Just One of the Guys (1985,  PG-13)
Just One of the Guys
One of the better of the 80's teen flicks. A girl poses as boy to get her story published for the school newspaper and complications ensue. Very, very funny. Holds up pretty good today. The brother, Buddy is hilarious.

Terry: "You know, sometimes I just wish I was a guy." Buddy: "No you don't! The male body needs sex at all times! It's a living hell!"

The Thing (1982,  R)
The Thing
Very cool sci-fi/horror flick set in Antarctica. At an American research base of only 12 men, an alien life form is discovered and all hell breaks loose. This alien has the unique ability to imitate any other life form it comes in contact with - including humans. Kurt Russell plays RJ MacReady, the pilot who tries to figure out how to kill this thing before everyone is taken over. Directed by ace horror master John Carpenter with terrific gore effects, a suspenseful music score, and a twinge of mystery. Done before the heyday of CG, this 1982 film holds up remarkably well. A treat for horror/sci-fi fans.
