X2
(2003, PG-13)
Best comic book movie ever. Terrific sequel that improves on the original in every way. In their second movie, the team must join forces with their rival Magneto to battle a covert anti-mutant operation that targets all mutants in the world. As a die hard comic book fan, X2 hits all the right notes from the opening scene at the White House to the thrilling assault on the X-mansion, where Wolverine cuts loose against some bad guys, to the super climax where Storm turns on the cold and Jean Grey lets loose with some major firepower. Oh yeah, this movie is awesome. The entire cast is rock solid including Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, and Famke Janssen.

Wolverine: [Rogue, Bobby, and Pyro look at Logan, none of the kids knowing what to say]

One word to describe this movie: AWESOME! I saw it Thursday night with some friends with a packed audience and this movie did not disappoint. Robert Downey Jr is perfect as Tony Stark, the wealthy industrialist who makes weapons for the US government. When he gets captured by some insurgents in a foreign land who force him to build a weapon of mass destruction, Tony resolves to start helping the world by taking down bad guys like these. This movie takes the essence of the comic book Iron Man and brings it to life wonderfully. Downey Jr never takes a wrong step in this role. No one else could have pulled it off. The supporting cast is also solid with Jeff Bridges as his rival Stane, Terrence Howard as his friend James Rhodes, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Tony's assistant Pepper Potts. Paltrow is terrific. This movie weaves incredible visual effects with a solid story that mixes drama, action, and humor effectively. I already claim Iron Man as the second best comic book movie, right behind X2. And I plan to see it again. Oh and stay for the scene after the end credits when Tony receives a special visitor. It was that scene and others throughout the movie like when he dons the red and gold armor that made all my fanboy dreams come true. A great way to start the summer movie season.
Christine Everheart: Tony Stark! Christine Everheart, Vanity Fair magazine
Tony Stark: Hi, yeah okay, go.
Christine Everheart: Mr. Stark, you've been called the Da Vinci of our time; what do you say to that?
Tony Stark: Absolutely ridiculous, I don't paint.
Christine Everheart: What do you say to your other nickname, the 'Merchant of Death'?
Tony Stark: That's not bad.

Spider-Man 3 has been out for two days now and I've seen it twice. It's a great movie. Most critics have trashed it, but they also trashed Pirates 2 last summer. And it turned out just fine. Me personally, I think this is the best of the Spider-man films. It's the perfect summertime movie, full of action, humor, drama, good characters and loads of top notch special effects. Director Sam Raimi is a genius. I don't know how he managed to keep a movie filled with 3 villians, introduce another supporting female character, and tie up loose ends from the very first Spider-man movie. But he does, and it's great. In this one Spidey has to battle Harry who dons his father garb of the Green Goblin; a new villian called the Sandman, and of course everyone's favorite bad guy-Venom. And Peter must deal with romantic troubles with his girlfriend Mary Jane and new girl Gwen Stacy. All the actors are in top form. Maguire owns Spder-man/Peter. I can't see no one else doing this role. Dunst is better in this one than the previous flicks as Mary Jane. James Franco goes from nice to evil in seconds as Harry. Thomas Haden Church is very good as Sandman. Bryce dallas Howard is fetching as Gwen and she holds her own against some of the veteran cast. And Topher Grace is perfectly slimy as Peter's rival at the Daily Bugle and later as Venom. The action is taken up a notch in this one-there are 6 major action sequences for this one, including a sensational opening sequence featuring Peter and Harry going at it above the streets of New York. The creation and effects of Sandman are truly eye-popping. And when Venom finally shows at the end for the climax, it's heaven. There are only a few movie series that every chapter is great. The original Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and maybe Lord of the rings. Spider-Man now joins that club. It's one hell of a movie and a perfect ending for the series.

Improves on the original in every way: bigger and better action, better villian, better effects.

The best Batman yet. Christian Bale is great and the supporting cast is one of the best assembled for a movie

Better than the first one; loaded with cool action scenes and Wesley is just bad ass.

I have no idea what movie the critics saw when they wrote their reviews for Hancock but it couldn't have been the one I just saw. Twice. I was led to believe that this was one of the worst movies ever made. You know up there with Batman and Robin, Catwoman, Wild Wild West. And it's not. Hancock is a truly original take of the super hero theme with Will Smith taking center stage as the depressed and alcoholic anti-hero who causes more damage than he does when he tries to do a good deed. When Hancock saves PR man Ray (Jason Bateman) from a train, the guy feels obligated to help Hancock clean up his image. Ray takes Hancock to meet his wife Mary (the gorgeous Charlize Theron) and their kid Erin. Ray's plan is to have Hancock surrender and go to jail, and when crime gets out of control, the city will beg for his help. You have never seen a super hero movie like this. If you think it's gonna be all jokes and kinda like a spoof, you couldn't be more wrong. Things get serious around the halfway point and Hancock has to make some tough choices. This movie is very entertaining, with all three leads giving solid performances. The humor and action scenes work pretty good, deftly directed by Peter Berg. Both times I saw Hancock with audiences who were cheering and laughing and having a great time. Not the kind you would expect if this movie was really that terrible. Which it isn't. A great summertime film which sets up perfectly for the sequel. Hancock is a winner.

Ray Embrey: People don't like you, Hancock.
Hancock: Do I look like I care what people think?

The one that brought a new kind of comic book hero to the screen. Wesley Snipes is awesome as Blade, a vampire hunter who is half vampire himself, wiping out each and every vampire he comes across. His main adversary is Deacon Frost, played by Stephen Dorff, who also happened to be the vampire that killed his mom while she was pregnant with Blade. So it's payback time. Lots of blood and gore and gunfire and hand to hand combat make this an extremely entertaining movie. Look for the awesome opening scene at a vampire rave club where Blade just goes ballistic.
Blade: "There are worse things out tonight than vampires".
Karen: "Like what?"
Blade: "Like me."

I think the concensus is that this is how the first Hulk movie should have been. More Hulk smash, less talk. Edward Norton is a perfect fit as Bruce Banner, the man on the run who is trying to find a cure for his special condition. Of course the government tracks him down to harness his blood cells so they can make the perfect weapon. William Hurt is Gen Ross who leads the charge to capture banner. He is very good in his role as is Tim Roth, a wily soldier who after a confrontation with the Hulk decides he wants some of that awesome power for himself. He will soon become The Abomination. Also on hand is Liv Tyler as Bruce's one time love Betty. She assumes the role from Jennifer Connelly and makes the character even better. I liked her portrayal way more than Connelly. Now the effects are much improved from the first film. This Hulk looks a lot more convincing. And the action scenes rock. Plus there's that cameo by Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) that pretty much seals the deal on this entertaining summer movie.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Betty Ross: [Betty and Bruce need to get across own in New York City] The subway is probably quickest.
Bruce Banner: Me in a metal tube, deep underground with hundreds of people in the most aggressive city in the world?
Betty Ross: Right. Let's get a cab.

An entertaining final entry in the series. Not quite as good as X2, but then again that movie was phenomenal. The Last Stand on its own is a satisfying film that pretty much wraps up all the loose ends.
Logan: "Did he just call me boy?"

300
(2007, R)
A most glorious movie. I enjoyed this from beginning to end. The crowd I saw it with opening night was all into it. It's a familiar story but it's never been done like this. The story of how 300 Spartans stood against 1 million Persians who invaded their country. Gerard Butler is Spartan King Leonidas, who delivers a truly commanding performance. It will remind you of Russell Crowe from Gladiator. Lena Headey is his wife, Queen Gorgo, who is equally impressive. She has become one of my favorite actresses now. 300 rocks with some of the best battle scenes ever captured on film. It rivals any of the battle scenes from the Lord of the Rings movies. The narration by David Wenham is a nice touch also. Everyone should make the trip to see it at the cinema because you need to see how impressive this movie looks and sounds. The style is simliar to what Sin City did a few years ago. I can't wait to see 300 again.
King Leonidas: "Spartans! Enjoy your breakfast, for tonight we dine in hell!"

Very well done comic book adaptation set in the future of Britain where a masked vigilante called V wages ware against the government's oppression. He rescues a young woman named Evey who becomes his ally. A well written and stylishly directed film with a suprisingly strong performance by Natalie Portman as Evey. And Hugo Weaving is pretty good also, considering the fast his face his covered the entire movie in a mask.
Evey: "Remember, remember the fifth of November".

This sequel improves on the original with better effects, more action, and a better storyline. For their newest adventure, as Reed and Sue prepare for their much delayed wedding, an intergalactic stranger dubbed the Silver Surfer arrives wreaking havoc on Earth. He precedes the destroyer of worlds named Galactus, whose sole purpose is to feed on a planet's energy before it's destroyed. Some of the backstory has been changed from the original comics but it didn't bother me. What you have is a pretty cool looking movie that given it's short running time, gets things going and never gets dull. The entire cast returns and everybody is solid from Jessica Alba as Sue who has a funny scene when she temporarily absorbs her brother's powers. Michael Chiklis is good as The Thing who gets a better makeup job this time around. Ioan Gruffudd gets to cut loose as Mr. Fantastic with a funny dance scene at his bachelor party. And of course Chris Evans is still cool as Johnny. The Silver Surfer is very awesome looking, it will remind you of the T-1000 from T2. Even Dr. Doom shows up but he doesn't have that much to do this time around. So if you enjoyed the first film, you should definetly like this one. FLAME ON!

A pure comic book movie that delivers all that it promises. Nic Cage is Johnny Blaze, daredevil motorcyclist who makes a deal with the devil to save the life of his dad. He is tricked by the devil into becoming his bounty hunter, sent to capture demons who have escaped from hell. This is one awesome looking movie with some very cool special effects the likes you have never seen before. Blaze's first transformation into Ghost Rider is truly a piece of work. The villians GR must deal with include Blackheart, the devil's own son who is making a play to rule Earth and three fallen angels called The Hidden who do his bidding. The love interest is supplied by Eva Mendes who is so very hot looking. And Sam Elliott is cool as an old timer who knows a lot about Ghost Riders. And Cage is actually quite good as Blaze. But the effects are what truly drives this film and like I said they are freakin awesome. None of that CG overkill crap either that a lot of other movies suffer from. A perfect mix of humor, drama and action make this one of the better comic book movies.
Caretaker: "You alright?"
Johnny Blaze: "Yeah, I'm good. I feel like my skull is on fire, but I'm good."

Good but not great. A young man named Wesley who is a timid office worker is suddenly thrust into the world of assassinations. His father is the best in the world and the organization called The Fraternity recruits Wesley to join them. This group is led by Sloan, wonderfully played by Morgan Freeman. Sloan's second in command is The Fox, played by Angelina Jolie, who is awesome. Wesley is played by James Mc Avoy, who convincingly goes from regular joe to unstoppable killer. The first 15 minutes of this movie is pure bliss which includes a rooftop shoot-out and a wild car chase with Angelina at the wheel. Things slow down quickly after that but pick up later with a sensational train sequence that is quite a jaw dropper. Then the finale is staged well but seems just ok. Don't get me wrong, Wanted is a good movie with three strong performances by Jolie, Freeman and McAvoy but it could have been better.

Sloan: Welcome... to the Fraternity. This gun you're holding belonged to your father, he could conduct a symphony orchestra with it

A very different kind of vampire movie that is very effective. Set in a small Alaskan town called Barrow, the residents get ready for a month long of no sunlight. Most head south, but some stay to ride it out. On the last day of sunlight a stranger comes in to town, taking out the town's power and communication. And also kills all the sled dogs just for good measure. He's played with relish by Ben Foster (who was a nonfactor as Angel in X-Men 3). Josh Hartnett and Melissa George play the husband and wife sheriff team who must sort out all the weird happenings. When the sun finally goes down, all hell breaks loose. Savage vampires descend on the town led by Marlow (wonderfully played by Danny Huston). And this bunch of bloodsuckers are quite vicious. They paint the town red with their brutal attacks. I thought this movie was pretty cool for a couple of reasons. It showed vampires in a different light, more like killing machines than suave romantics. And the townsfolk are potrayed as regular people. None of them have access to fancy weaponry or training ala Blade and Underworld. But they do fight back the best way they can. With axes, firearms, dynamite, and heavy duty snow plow equipment. The cast is solid led by Hartnett and George. They are very strong in their roles, and to make matters even more complex, they're in the middle of a separation. The vampires are intense-they move very fast and kill even faster. And the look of the film is great. The story does have some holes in it during the down time when our heroes are hiding out and trying to stay quiet. But it doesn't last too long before an attack occurs. Definetly a good movie to see over Halloween. And be prepared because the gore factor is quite high with decapitations, bodies being gutted and chomped on, and vampires being skewered left and right.
The Stranger: That cold ain't the weather, that's death approaching.

Just ok movie, but I was expecting a lot more. It relies too much on the original film and it's kinda slow. Brandon Routh is good as Superman/Clark Kent. Kevin Spacey is top notch as Lex Luthor. Kate Bosworth is better than I thought she would be as Lois Lane. The special effects are amazing. It's a little long and could have used more action. But the best reason to see this film is for Parker Posey. She definetly has the best scenes in the movie and the best lines like "Wow. That was really something Lex. It's like frigging Gone with the Wind". Priceless.
