I went in with extremely low expectations given the mixed reviews, but walked away pleasantly surprised. I thought it was much, much better than Land and maybe even a bit better than Day (I know, I know, that's sacrilege to some but even though I really like Day it falls a little short for me personally). Yes, the commentary on the media and desensitation via technology is in your face at times, but it's still a relevant issue these days and most of the voice overs were insightful and well written in my opinion. On a few occasions it seemed a little too overt (especially at the end), but I still liked the fact he stayed focused on the theme throughout instead of giving it cursory treatment. I also thought the movie was well paced, seemed more urgent and gritty like his earlier movies and since I'm a sucker for both road movies and docu- (mocku-) mentaries I really liked how the storyline was structured and how it was filmed and edited. The movie had enough zombie stuff to suit me personally, but I believe some out there may be expecting more in the way of gore and action and might be disappointed by that. The most common complaint I've read is that the acting is "terrible" but I personally didn't have a problem at all with the cast. I thought most of them were decent enough. |
