Overheard (Qie ting feng yun) (2009,  Unrated)
Overheard (Qie ting feng yun)
A brilliant script. The pacing was really good and the characters all have an interesting story. The acting from some was good but there were some actors that did a very poor job such as Zhang Jingchu and Michael Wong. The lead actors were great and were perfectly cast. Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu were all terrific. I liked the way everything played out and the film builds up suspense really well. I am a big fan of the directors and I think they've done a superb job with this excellent movie.

Chi Bi: Xia - Jue zhan tian xia (Red Cliff II) (2009,  Unrated)
Chi Bi: Xia - Jue zhan tian xia (Red Cliff II)
The 2nd part to the epic tale. The first was good, but this one is better. The characters are still the same, the acting is still good and it still looks good. Everything is the same with the first film, except they've raised these qualities up a notch and have thrown in much more epic battles. The tactical style that they use here is so interesting and some of the sub plots here are so clever. There's a scene where Zhuge Liang must collect arrows, and the way he does is just so... I'm not even gonna tell you, just watch it and embrace it's pure power. So, if you loved the first part, then obviously you gotta see the conclusion. It's so entertaining!

L: Change the World (2008,  Unrated)
L: Change the World
I think they casted L really well. Ken'ichi Matsuyama plays his character really well, and theres something very sweet about the way he develops in the film. It's a gorgeous film and it's surely my favourite Death Note film. The story is much more different from the other Death Note movies - it doesn't have much to do with the book itself. There's nothing of the paranormal here and the characters are more intellegent. Hideo Nakata has proven that he can not only make horror films, but make a drama with everything we want in that type of film. Fans of the character L should love this, because his so likeable in this. It's a lovely film!

Arashi no yoru ni (Stormy Night) (2005,  Unrated)
Arashi no yoru ni (Stormy Night)
This reminds me a lot of another great movie called Brokeback Mountain. This is probably one of the best anime feature films i've ever seen. I love the storyline. It's got that sweet feeling that we get from some of the Studio Ghibli films. It's very, very cute! It's just such an enjoyable experience to see these different animals become friends. Wolves eat goat - here we've got a goat and a wolf becoming friends. it's beautiful! There's a powerful sense of friendship. The character development works with these characters, and the characters are all so likeable. Mei and Gabu, the two main characters are absolutely adorable. I loved some of the visuals here, the artists have done a very good job here. The ending is terrific. it's a whole lot of fun.

Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi) (2001,  PG)
Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi)
This is my favourite Miyazaki movie to date. We've never seen this type of film. It's very original just like other Miyazaki films. There are some outstanding visuals - i loved the character design. The spirits and creatures all looked sensational! The plot - WOW! It's sweet just like other films by the director. There's a subtle charm to it and you just fall in love with that. It is a wee bit too long considering it is animation, but hey - I was having a great time for the whole 2 hours. The characters are all interesting, with the girl Chihiro and there were many more. The ending is sheer beauty and the strong use sinister shadows and other dark stuff works very well here. You'll be blown away by this spectacular film!

Isabella (2006,  Unrated)
Isabella
I was watching this on TV and I read a preview about it. Chapman To is a good actor, but when it said he would play a dad, I had my doubts but I still wanted to check out how he would do it. I saw his performance and it was outstanding. He was great as a dad, and this wasn't a dad that we see a lot of in movies. He was a type of different father, one that was still a loving one but a bit careless. Isabella Leong as the daughter was terrific. The two actors created a powerful relationship and bond between their characters and they did it so well. I loved some of the scenery, the cinematography was beautiful - they used a lot of green which suited this a lot. The story is excellent and I loved the ending - so tragic and sad, just what I want in a drama like this. My only complaint is that at times they made the film play on scenes really long and it got a bit slow, but overall, that's a very small problem. This is just everything a drama should be. It's excellent!

Chi Bi (Red Cliff) (2009,  R)
Chi Bi (Red Cliff)
I'm giving four and a half to the original version of this (Red Cliff I). In asia, Red Cliff was released in two parts, 6 months apart - with a total running time of 4 1/2 hours. An international version was released in west - and they pretty much cut it down to 2 1/2 hours, they've combined the two films into one and shortened it. I saw the original (better) version before the international - and the international just sucks balls!

Review of Original Film:
John Woo brings to us a brilliant work of art - the first part of Red Cliff. the plot is very interesting and it does have a lot of depth. The asian cast is lovely. There are actors from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and Mongolia - all creating wonderful characters, most notably Takeshi Kaneshiro's Zhuge Liang. The battle scenes are all staged so well, and they're visually stunning. That's another thing to love about this - it looks terrific, it's just such a visually impressive movie. I loved the sets, props and costumes - all very beautiful. 4 1/2 stars to the orignal Red Cliff I.

Review of International Version:
I can just tell you that this is crap! Sure, we have the same stuff from the original but they've cut out so much of it. All the substance has been taken away from the original such as character development. It just ruins it. This is just like saying that you'll show a shorter version of the Harry Potter series or Lord of the Rings. It's so bad - and you can tell that there's something of rascism here - why do this to a chinese movie? This only has one good part - and that is the battles. They're still good, but they've been edited up so it would be much more better to see the original battle scenes. I'm only giving this 1/2 a star because I'm a big fan of the 2 original films, and to see this combined, shorter version of both is insulting to me and "I'm offended by that". Just watch the 2 complete films and i assure you will have a better time with them that with this punk ass version!
