Casanova
It's not just a chick flick like you may think. Its got amazing characters, a perfect cast, beautiful sets and costumes, and a hilarious and clever storyline. But if you are just looking for a chick flick, well thats there as well.

Immortal Beloved (1994,  R)
Immortal Beloved
Beethoven is an absolute wonder. And having him portrayed by Gary Oldman is like a dream come true. With Beethoven's unsurpassable music, Gary Oldman's performance, the sets and costumes, elegant women, and the overwhelmingly romantic story, this movie is a true pleasure.

Apocalypto (2006,  R)
Apocalypto
A captivating story about a man who risks everything for his family. This movie is proof that you dont need big Hollywood names to make a good movie. Everyone was excellent. And in case you're worried about the talk of this being overly disgusting, its not. Its just about as violent as Gladiator, if not a little less.

Tristan & Isolde (2006,  PG-13)
Tristan & Isolde
Some one told me before I saw this that it wasnt as much of a love story as they had expected, and that it was more of an action movie. I found that not only was it all about love, but that it was one of the greatest love stories I have ever heard. Everything that happened in the movie was related to the love of Tristan and Isolde, whether cause or effect. I love the dialogue, it was stuck in my head for some time after watching it. It is such a strong story, the things they went through that tore them apart, and the things they put themselves through so they could be together. I will never forget that love.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) (2000,  PG-13)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long)
Very beautiful and graceful. The story was mostly satisfying, except certain aspects that were unclear. As frustrating as the fight sequences were for most people, I found them a pleasure to watch. Everyone moved like a soft wind. It was almost soothing. We're accustomed to fight sequences being accompanied by loud sound effects and pounding music. But the almost soundless fights with soft music was a very interesting and welcome change. I can accept that in a fantasy world there might be a form of martial arts that, if discipline, can help someone glide and jump very well. The only thing that bothered me, besides the slightly confusing story, is why ppl seemed to change direction mid-air. Wires were obvious.

I actually really enjoyed this, although it would have been much better if it wasnt so low budget. Karl Urban made a great lead. I was very indifferent about him as an actor before, since I had only seen him as a minor character in Lord of the Rings, and a tertiary villain in The Chronicles of Riddick. But he was great in this role and now I rather like him. The story was, for some reason, very interesting even though somewhat simple. It really pulls you in, even with such little dialogue. Most of the movie is action so there isnt much time for dialogue. But even when there is, the characters interact mostly with looks. The actors gave them so much heart. But the camera work was really awkward and shots of the avalanche looked like stock from National Geographic or something. There were also a lot of scenes in the forest and on the mountain that felt like they were on a set. Too low budget for what could have been such an epic movie.

Australia (2008,  PG-13)
Australia
This was really not what I expected. The first half of the movie was an adventure with some really exciting scenes and a touch of romance, the last half was a war drama with a lot of romance. I'm not a fan of drama, war, or romance usually but thanks to the first half of he movie I really cared what happened. I cried several times. It was also really beautiful. It wasnt as colorful as Baz's other films, but still slightly stylized on top of the natural beauty. The cast was excellent, all of them, not just the leads. That includes Brandon Walters who played Nullah. What an adorable little boy. My only complaint is...(highlight) that Nullah left at the end. I thought that everything Drover and Sarah went though to find him, and that Drover finally admit to himself that he loved them was proof that Nullah belonged with them. It wasnt a terrible ending but it seemed counterproductive.

Very exciting dogfights with excellent sfx. And although not Oscar worthy, a decent story. I also really loved the characters, especially Rawlings and Cassidy.

The Clan of the Cave Bear (1986,  R)
The Clan of the Cave Bear
This was a really interesting movie. Slow and very character driven, so dont watch it if thats a problem for you. There was also very little dialog, and when there was it wasnt English. But I still found it captivating.

Les Miserables (1998,  PG-13)

Joan of Arc (1999,  Unrated)
Joan of Arc
Its a mini-series so I used to like to watch just the first part since the ending sucks. Bad thing about Joan of Arc movies, she always dies!

Enemy at the Gates (2001,  R)

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007,  PG-13)
Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Not as good as the first one. This seemed to be more about Elizabeth's obsession with Walter Raleigh than about the war with Spain.

Jodhaa Akbar (2008,  Unrated)
Jodhaa Akbar
A great historical war drama with a love story included for added depth. It was good that it only had an occasional song, and they were well placed, so not to ruin the serious tone of a historical drama. As usual, everything is beautiful; sets, costumes, music. I enjoyed it, but was not as amazed as I often am by Bollywood movies. I found the politics of the story a little hard to follow, although that could be due to poor translation.
