Dead End
I think this movie has at most 10 characters.
And you don't have brilliant performances by any of them. However this movie will grab you till the end.

The permise is simple: It's Christmas Eve, and the main character decides to take a shortcut for the first time in his life. A first time that will also be his last... The movie is driven inside a car, with some dialogues and little action. But is tense and creates a spooky atmosphere, you're almost jumping to see what happens next. And most of the times nothing really happens.. but you keep the feeling.

Low-budget: yes, median performances: yes, but a must see in the Horror B movies class. It can make some Hollywood performances shy by showing how a story must be delivered.

House on Haunted Hill (1999,  R)

Hostel (2006,  R)
Hostel
Well, this one could've been a great movie. It had all to be a reference in the horror movies. It's raw, with good photography, politically incorrect and with a twisted and also intriguing psychological background story.

But the first 40 soft-core minutes, without any character depth give away some of the credibility the movie should have. Some choices of the main character at the end, as well as some incoherencies really enshroud its "beauty".

It passed from a cult movie to a teen movie. It gets 3 stars for it's photography and some original scenes. And also for Eli Roth's courage in portraying such tabu subjects into a movie.

It's a movie to see once, it's really one of a kind: original but uninspiring.

Audition (Ôdishon) (1999,  R)
7
American Psycho (2000,  R)
8
Very Bad Things (1998,  R)

The Devil's Advocate (1997,  R)
The Devil's Advocate
My favorite one. Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron deliver a fast paced movie where our inner desires are revealed. The movie is not about law, but how our "law" is filled inside our deepest emotions.

Good and Evil, Saint and Sinner. The contrasts are there and smoothly delivered in this masterpiece. Outstanding.

Saw
Unique.

It was the first and though the sequels are also good, this one is unique. When I first saw this movie I didn't have any expectations. The only actor I knew was Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon and I don't recall him as being a great actor.

So the story develops in a bathroom, two guys have a game to play and the rules are dictated by a mysterious voice in a tape while they are chained with few chances to move. The pieces are reconstructed this time in front of your eyes, puzzling a twisted story.

Maybe the most surprising low-budget movie I saw in the last years. Flawless.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999,  R)
The Talented Mr. Ripley
This movie didn't receive the best critics, but for me is easily one of the best thrillers of all time. An young Matt Damon dresses a trouble minded Mr.Ripley whose demented intentions are cast against his childish face.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law complete a well chosen cast for this movie. It's slow paced till the middle but then it builds a never ending roller coaster of dark emotions.

Exquisite and tasteful.

Seven (Se7en)
David Fincher brought us a story about the 7 Deadly Sins. It's raw and well done. Brad Pitt doesn't cast his best performance here but you can see Kevin Spacey and Morgan Freeman at their best.

Fast paced and with an amazing ending. Great movie.
