Halloween (1978, R)
There are genre defining films, and Halloween is the citzen Kane of the modern horror template, plain and simple. 3O years on and the film is still scary, does'nt matter how many times you have seen the film you still have at least a few jumps in the short running time. Working best on the early daytime double takes of Laurie seeing the boogie man in gardens, standing outside her school. These having been copied to death, but here they are still masterful. The acting is good considering, Jamie lee curtis cermented herself as a scream icon, in this film, and Donald Pleasence is the icing on the cake as the man hunting the twisted killer, a shuddering performance. Still the real star here is Carpenter who winds up the tension and produces pure gold, very much applified by the excellent simple film score (by Carpenter as well). With a number of classic scenes from the waredrobe attack, to the final scene of Laurie unaware of the killer creeping up to her and appearing out of the shadows. |
